Derek Carr vs Teddy Bridgewater

#81

Quote:This is why he reminds me of Stafford so much. He has a rocket arm and can deliver accurate passes anywhere on the field off his back foot. He also can throw from many different arm angles as well.

Yeah I can see that one. He's like a mix of Cutler and Stafford to me. The arm angles is major plus too.

Excited to watch him more in depth. Curious to see how he does with his reads and get more insight on his pocket presence. From everything I've read it has improved a ton.

He has improved but i still cant see him as a top 5 or even top 10 pick. I dont like his stance when in the pocket and he tends to shy away from the rush and throw from his back foot too many times.

He tends to almost push the ball out instead of throwing even when he has time and this leads to over throws in the intermediate range which NFL safeties will love taking back for 6. Under pressure his footwork still becomes very shaky and he does the early in the pros Eli Manning thing of turning away during his release and just hoping the receiver makes a play. Thing is he is still in college and Manning didnt do it till reaching the NFL.

I do like his deep ball though and will say its the best in the class. Just everything else isnt nearly enough to make me think top 5 pick.

Greg Gabriel of the NFP posted his review of Carr. If you haven't read Gabriel's work before, understand that he is no professional writer, but he does make some good points. Excerpt of the article follows:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...Carr plays from a spread formation and I have not seen him take a snap form under center. He sets up quickly and is very good at going through a progression and finding an open receiver. He holds the ball high and has a very quick delivery. When he makes his decision on who to target, the ball is out of his hand instantly. He has good vision and rarely makes a poor decision. He does not force throws and, consequently, throws few interceptions

Quote:Aye, HeeRo are you a current/former Fresno student? Just curious I know your a big Carr fan. Looks like the MW Championship game will be in Fresno if they beat SJS. I live about 45 minutes away so if it is in Fresno I think it would be a good game to go to. Im not a Fresno St student or alum but seeing how they are the local D1 school I always root for them especially since Pat Hill is gone.

Quote:nah i attend a different school, though i have a few friends that are current and former students.  one my friend from sjsu asked if i wanted to go to the game this weekend too bad its thanksgiving giving so i couldnt lol.  yeah i use to live close to fresno when i was growing up and ive always enjoyed fresno sports. go paul george!  i wish i can go to the mw championship but finals week is coming up and the drive is too long, but man you should go, it would be carrs final home game, i bet it will be packed. ask davante if hes gonna declare and tell burse to come to jacksonville lol.

Quote:. I'd enjoy watching a game or three of him in action. Besides, Fresno State has got some talent in the stands, if you know what I mean.

Say what? That's the first I've ever heard of our talent.

Really?! Man, I stumbled across a game either early this season or last and I was hoping they would spend more time on the fan cam than anything else!

Being sandwiched in between LA and SF, I can tell you we are viewed as wayyyyyyyy down the hot chicks in CA list. Or at least that's the overwhelming perception.

I have been watching him his whole career and I said (in this thread I think) I'd take him in the 3rd, although I'd be all right with taking him in the 2nd too. Maybe I'm just too shell shocked by Gabbert to like a guy with Carr's footwork and throwing off the back foot issues.

before the season started i made a thread stating he was a solid day 2 prospect, and his main concerns were his footwork and pocket presence, and all throughout the season he made significant strides in both category especially his pocket presence. he has great measurables and i was just watching his cut ups against rutgers and they mentioned he ran a 4.56 40!!! bradley loves mobile qbs and carr can take hits and the way our season is going teddy and clowney will be out of reach and carr is a perfect candidate for bradley to mold.

Look I've been seeing a whole lot about how Teddy isn't a can't- miss prospect. Regardless as to your opinion about him, we need to realize something. The only team in the past twentyish years who have been blessed with a can't-miss prospect is the Colts.

Everyone else, every SINGLE quarterback drafted since Manning, excluding Luck, has been a gamble. All of them. When we talk about QBs, you look at franchise-potential, not once-in-a-generation potential. Otherwise, you'll only draft a QB once in a generation, if you're lucky enough to be properly positioned for him.

Take Teddy, Mariota, Carr, whoever. Joe Shmoe out of Northwest South State. Whoever has the ability to be a franchise guy.

Blaine Gabbert's biggest strengths coming out were his measurables, and his 4.5 speed. His biggest weaknesses were pocket presence and footwork. Coming from a spread system.

Not hating on you or Carr, just saying.

Carr's pocket presence is much much better than Gabberts was in college. There is a major difference in how they use their athleticism. Gabbert runs hesitant and Carr runs with a purpose.

and to add from bleedingteals comments, carr actually produced in the system, also he played in a pro style offense in 2011 and had good stats.  Carr is a much better leader than gabbert and is a more polished passer, he is not scared to take hits. if you see how he runs you would relinquish your gabbert comparison.  if gabbert was a top 10 selection just based on measurables alone, carr should receive the same consideration and he has a better resume.

It all sounds good except for the gimmicky offense/ taking 0 snaps from under Center, like Mariota....

Taking snaps from under center or not isn't a huge deal unless he has a huge fear of a pass rush in his face like Gabbert.

Citing 40 times for a QB?? C'mon man....

And Carr and Bridgewater are the same height and Carr is about 10-15 lbs heavier.

his first year as a starter in 2011 he played in a pro style offense under head coach pat hill.

Its not a huge deal, but it is something that I hate to see a QB have to "learn" at this stage of the game. You just don't know how it will affect other parts of his game (if at all)....but thats the point - the unknown. Having a QB like Teddy that has done it his whole career to this point and doesn't need to really "learn" anything other than adjusting to the speed of the pro's just seems like the smarter bet.

uhh whats wrong with citing his 40 time? its a huge positive. hes still a strict pocket passer so relax, bradley prefers his qbs to be very mobile.
