Besides QB this might be the most important signing this year.

I am sure this guy is a lot more accurate than Austin Hardin, but come on, how can they expect that from a kicker who rarely played in games? One of Hardin's problems is getting blocked by the kick rush.

Pineiro is probably one of the most important signings for the team; plus, he can make an immediate impact.

However, I wouldn't buy much into the 70+ yard kicks. He was kicking with a 20+ mph wind to his back. Reminds me of Nick Rose from Texas. Everyone was in awe of him kicking 80+ yard field goals with ease on video. Yet, he can barely make a field goal come game time. Heck, he missed the extra point that could have won the game against Cal this year. I believe he's under 70% beyond 40 and under 40% beyond 50. YouTube is littered with videos of kickers making 70-80 yard field goals. The kickers always have a strong wind to their back and it's never the first take. Like the Dude Perfect videos, you gotta know he never makes those shots first take haha.
New signature because HIGH SCORE found the periodic table offensive. Pathetic LOL

With that said, anyone that can kick a 70 yard field goal even one time has a pretty darn good leg and I think that's all he was proving there.

Accuracy is yet to be proven and with kickers that's 10x more important than power, imo.

So apparently this guy has never actually kicked a field goal during a game?

Nope, JUCO as a soccer player. Coach thought he'd be a great FB kicker. Started training for it and never stopped. Has been training ever since with kicking specialists.

Not kicking in games is a little bit dangerous.  The intensity of the moment can really rattle your nerves.  It will be interesting to see how he responds.

That is why I don't like it. Kickers are under enormous pressure when they have to attempt field goals at the end of a half or game. When Josh Scobee was blocked at Tennessee last year, it was a do or die kick. Players regularly make FGs longer than 70 yards in practice because there is no pressure from the defense to worry about.

Players regularly make 70 yarders in practice because there is no pressure?  No, no they don't.  In fact its about as rare as it comes.  There have been only a handful or less of people to ever have done it in practice....ever.

Of course that means we should take Peneiro's 77-yard FG with a grain of salt. If it is rarely done in practice, obviously you can't expect him to do it again.

I can think of numerous college and NFL kickers that can make 65-75 yard field goals in practice. Even a punter comes to mind that can make that kick. It is not as rare as you think.

It is definitely not as rare considering Pineiro's surroundings. If you watch the video, all you can hear is what seems like gale force winds. His shirt and the American flag in the background show he was kicking with about 20+ mph winds behind his back. The combination of no offensive line to kick over and 20+ mph winds behind his back added lots of distance. And the video doesn't show how many takes were taken before.

We used to have two kickers that could kick them 65 plus in practice.

Both soccer players.

Obviously neither of them ever attempted 65-yard FGs in a game.

That's still pretty amazing, but 65 and 77 are far different distances. lol

I saw Janikowski on film kick a 60 yarder during a game in high school.  That guy was a monster and a legit kicker.  This kid going to Florida had to show some talent though for all these schools to offer him.  It will be interesting to see how he handles the spotlight.

In the grand scheme of things, the number that can is much lower then can not.
