Cornerback (Hargreaves specifically) most likely pick?

#21

Not to mention Dave already said he drafted Fowler last year because he wasn't thrilled with this years pass rusher group. Also, I can't see Dave drafting a guy in the 1st who won't even start.

Exactly. It is amazing how many posters forget who our first 2015 draft pick is. The reason he put off drafting a quarterback was he preferred the 2014 class. Pretty obvious.

Quote:No it isn't. Aside from FS the front seven is the place of need.

DANTE FOWLER and SEN'DERRICK MARKS. Who do you think they are? Answer: Defensive linemen who will start next season.

HOUSE AND COLVIN. Who do you think they are? Answer: Cornerbacks who have no shutdown ability.

VERNON HARGREAVES. Who do you think he is? Answer: An elite shutdown cornerback who will start in Week 1.

You have to be ignorant to not understand who we need with the first round pick.

Fowler and Marks are injured guys who may or may not  be effective next year. Fowler's not yet made it to training camp and he's a gater so that's two strikes against him.

House and Colvin have been fine considering that QBs get to take a nap in the pocket before deciding where to throw the ball.

Hargreaves is a good prospect, but your gate love is clouding what little judgement you have. We need guys who can win one on one in the trenches, without that anyone playing CB will have a bad day.

And CAPS don't make your case an more legit.

No one here has forgotten who we drafted last year. IMO it's ridiculous for Caldwell to put all of his pass rushing eggs in the basket of a player who is coming off an injury and hasn't played a single down in the NFL. When the NY Giants had Michael Strahan that didn't stop them from drafting Justin Tuck, JPP and Mathias Kiwanuka. All of those players were instrumental in beating the undefeated Patriots and winning the Super Bowl. You build a dominant defense from the inside out and great pass rushers can make a great secondary. We have no idea how good DFJ is going to be, and until we do, we need to keep drafting pass rushers until we have one that opposing teams have to scheme for.

Did the Giants not have better cornerbacks than we do right now? Were linemen the only players they needed on defense? It is wrong to compare their situation in 2007 to ours in 2015.

No it isn't. Our pass rush is the biggest weakness of our defense. The Giants had Corey Webster and Aaron Ross for their CBs. Not exactly world beaters. That defense thrived on the fact that they had 4 guys who could get after the QB. 2 of the best CBs in the NFL Josh Norman and Richard Sherman were drafted in the 5th round, so good CBs can be found in the later rounds. We need pass rushers and you can't never have too many of them.

I never said we don't need more good pass rushers. It is obvious we do. But it is important to not limit ourselves to a certain position in each round - DL first, FS second, etc. - and instead pick whoever is the best defensive player available (if our favorite guy is already gone). The BADP obviously may not be a DL. If he is, great, we improve our pass rush. If not, still great, we get a shutdown cornerback.

If Dave thinks VHII is the BAP at that spot then take him.  However if we draft a CB in the first right now he better be an elite shut down guy because there are too many greater needs on defense.

I actually agree with everything MissJagsFanatic has said in all of her posts in this thread.

I have no idea why people want to think Fowler is done. He will be ready next season.

He will be our starting LEO. We will also get Marks back. We will also sign a DE in FA.

We could possibly get Berry in FA.

We can't afford to pass up a shutdown corner.

I guarantee we will draft a corner in round 1.

Even with Fowler back...we still need 3 or 4 new pass rushers.

Could you imagine if Dave was able to pull getting Eric Berry and a vet pass rusher (Mario Williams, JPP, Vinny Curry, Courtney Upshaw, or Nick Perry)?

Then turning around and drafting Hargreaves and possibly a falling Robert Nkemdiche or Jonathan Bullard in the 2nd? Then get a pass rushing OTTO like Joe Schobert from Wisconsin.

LEO - Fowler/FA

DT - Marks/Nkemdiche

NT - Miller

DE - Odrik

WLB - Telvin

MLB - Poz

OTTO - Skuta/Schobert

CB - House

NB - Colvin

FS - Berry

SS - Cyprien

FS - Hargreaves

Man oh man.

Are you saying Vernon Hargreaves is not an elite shutdown corner?

What does that have to do with also needing an elite shutdown cornerback?

There is a big difference between needing a DL upgrade (which we do) and needing the specific players available to fix it. Drafting a linemen just because of his job title is putting a square peg in a round hole.

Hargreaves is the best corner to come out since Peterson.

Berry or Weddle and a vet pass rusher in FA and Hargreaves in the 1st is a dream scenario
