It seems like every post I read about our defense, guys are saying we can't bring down the QB.


I know Clemons is old, I know Branch isn't a starter, and I realize Davis ain't either.


But get outta here if you think we need to focus primarily on rushing the passer.


I bet any of you, including myself would trade Seattle's or Arizona's defense for ours without hesitation.


I bet you didn't realize Seattle and Arizona both have 35 sacks on defense this year.


The Jaguars have 34 sacks! 1 whole sack away from having the same number of sacks as the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Eagles.


The Bucs, Ravens, and Redskins have 34 sacks each, which ties them with the Jaguars.


We are getting to the QB.

No, we are not.   I don't care about stats, I know what I see, and that is, QBs dropping back and having all day to find a receiver.   We get very little pressure with our front 4.

Sacks alone don't tell the story. It also about pressuring the QB to move out of the pocket and his comfort zone. The Jaguars don't appear to be very good at that.


 

 

 

This is a classic case of box score watching. Try watching the games instead. You can start with last week's game. Watch Brees shred us apart during the first quarter taking all the time in the world while eating new orleans gumbo. After you're done watching that pull up tape on our defense in 3rd down situations. Especially 3rd and long.

It's true, we don't have enough consistent pressure on the QB.  That being said, go back and look at the saints game.  There were 3-4 instances where we had a free rusher in Drew Brees face, he throws the ball while ducking to cover himself and our DB's didn't make the play on the back end.  

 

We gave up a 2nd and 21 because we had a former CB starting at nickel corner.  that was a straight five step drop and get the ball out of your hands.  We had another instance where a backup linebacker got beat on a wheel route for a 40 yd td.  

 

When you're secondary gives up explosive TD's within the first 2.5 seconds from the snap then that's a problem too.  

 

We went out last year and invested the third pick of the draft in a leo, he tore his ACL.  We are going to probably draft one possibly more, and sign one possibly more.  

 

We also went out and signed a cover corner and it looks like we are going to take one early in the draft.  

 

We still don't have a starting FS on the roster.  

 

Just because something is a problem doesn't negate the fact that there can be a second problem as well.

This team could rush the passer if corner and safety play were more consistent. You still can't leave those guys alone to do their job. Thank god Poz and Telvin played well this year or it could have been a 1-15 year

Talent is the concern.

 

If the original poster would look at the defensive linemen on this roster, which one of those guys would represent anything close to a match up advantage against an opponent?

 

Who is the guy or guys on the defensive line for whom offenses have to account?

 

Which guy or guys command double teams or chips on a consistent basis?

 

At best, being the most generous way possible to the team-there are two guys right now that MIGHT...MIGHT fit that description-Marks and Fowler. 

 

See the problems with that?

 

1..Both Marks and Fowler are injured and have missed most and all of the year, respectively.  Even assuming they meet the criteria above, they haven't been available to us.

 

2.  Marks is a proven disruptor, but you don't expect defensive tackles to provide the bulk of your pass rush.

 

3.  Dante Fowler is COMPLETELY unproven.

 

The scheme has produced middle of the road sack figures, but make no mistake the team is not winning at the line of scrimmage on passing downs.

 

If it were, there is no way a depleted San Diego offense could limp into Everbank and pick the defense apart like it did, especially when it was shut down immediately before and after the game with us by teams that have a pass rush.

I think the defense could minimally use at least one upgrade at each level of the defense-so I would include LB too.

I think he CAN do it, based upon what I've seen of him and college and the reports about his love of the game and work ethic.

What kills me is the qb ratings against the Jaguars defense. Typically qbs are putting up something like a 110 qb rating on our D. In a couple cases it's up around 125 and in a couple it's down around 95, but they're almost all up there. There are only a few cases where we've actually held a qb to a fairly bad rating of like 70.

I believe that was the drive that started at the 2 for them?

 

I looked right at my buddy and said, Brees is going to drive them all the way down for a TD

 

LITTLE DID I KNOW.... it wouldn't be much of a drive... but a fly by instead.

 

Couple chunks and then boom, 3rd and forever turns into a TD.

 

Yes we get sacks. (Hooray) But we don't get enough pressure to get off the field on 3rd down. And we don't apply enough pressure to force bad throws.

Which is why we have like.... 5 or less INTs on the team.

 

Sacks are great.

But sacks alone make not a championship defense.
