The scheme that team ran looked a lot like a 3-4, but was in reality a 4-3 "under" system. It's actually very similar to the Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Dom Capers front.


Davis described the under formation as "almost" a 3-4 and his description of it sounds similar to what the Seattle Seahawks were running this season and basically what Pete Carroll did as USC.

Interesting, didn't see that. I wonder how he deviated from the 3-4 tree he was from to evolve into this front.

If I'm reading that correctl (and assuming they were correct in their breakdown), his scheme is the opposite of our scheme. Whereas the LEO and the 3T are on the same side of our defense and the 5T and SAM/OTTO on the other, the Eagles had their LEO/Predator on the same side as the 5T and their SAM on the opposite side. Given this front and our players, that would mean:

 

    Marks - Roy - Odrick

Skuta - Poz - Telvin - Fowler

 

Ironically, similar to the Eagles on the article, Poz would be the one that's a bit of an odd-man out. I know he's a "thumper" and a run stopper, but I've seen him struggle get off blocks and I think he operates best when he's "protected". On the other hand, Telvin and Fowler should flourish on the same side with Miller and Odrick taking up space.

Welp, folks, it looks like the reason for the interview is that Davis is a Seattle Scheme coordinator.  Based on the link from Tuxedo, the Eagles ran thier D line and LB's like we do...

 

I think I watched a couple games the Eagles played, but obviously not very closely.  But I'm assuming they loved running our zone schemes in the secondary as well...

 

This hire, to me, seems like more of the same with babich, except with maybe better execution?  I don't know about the execution part because of how bad the Eagles' D performed, but then again, I don't know how much is the D's fault and how much is Chip Kelley's fault for just being a terrible NFL head coach.

 

Edit:  To make my point regarding my reaction to this:  Imagine if we fired Fish, and then brought in Mularkey's old OC (already forgot his name) to run bubble screens all day long as well.  That's kinda how I feel about continuing on with the Seattle Scheme.

 

 I'm just not convinced it works---Unless you have all pro's at like 5 key positions on the D.  The odds of that happening are pretty low.  Missing 1 key all pro at any of the 5 key positions makes your D very suspect.  Heck look at how bad Seattle looked at the start of the season when they had I think 1 or 2 missing at the start of the season.  There was talk about "what's wrong with the Seahawks??" for like a month untill they got back their key players back.

 

Just my thoughts.

It's not easy as openings tend to be slim. Once every few years they may dump a few ineffective mods while bringing on some new blood, and at that point it becomes a little bit of a popularity contest with an admin making the final call.

Reading through the root article when Davis was at Arizona, I'm under the impression that Davis runs the Under Defense. The one difference that I see is that he tends to use Linebacker types at his "Predator" (LEO) position whereas Gus seems to use more Defensive End types.

Let's not act like Olson was perfect this year, or even great. He was alright, considering, but a lot of stuff he did was stupid and the short passing game is still a problem. Offense also comes out flat every game.

 

 

Yeah, but he's miles better than Bob Bratkowski and Jedd Fisch. ,,,and maybe even better than Dirk Koetter. Koetter could scheme a better running game, but he can't scheme a deep passing game anything like what Olson is doing.

I think Olson did a phenomenal job. Our players definitely helped out.


But its important to keep in mind that it was basically Olson's rookie year. It was a lot of our key players second year. The offense should only get better, especially if we improve the o line.


We need a coordinator who can not only make sure guys are in proper position to execute, but we also need one who can adjust on the fly and stop opposing offenses from making us look silly.

Bradley's defense is conceptually a 3-4, but the weakside linebacker's hand is in the turf. Skuta's role is almost identical to that of a 3-4 strongside linebacker.

Yeah that's true as well. I just went with Telvin because, there's absolutely no way you'd slot a 220 lb backer in the traditional 3-4 ILB.
