Surgery done. Torn ACL/LCL, no nerve damage, expected to make full recovery.

Quote:What is the recovery time for an ACL/MCL? I would seriously have to consider him if he was there in the 2nd.

MCL is about 3-4 weeks... ACL is about 8-10 months.

I'm thinking he goes 2nd round. I'd love to have him as a jaguar, but at this point in time we can't really afford to take a guy who won't be available for a whole season in the 2nd.

Maybe depending on free agency, things get really lucky and we have a little wiggle room where that would be a possibility but I still doubt it.

If he falls to the third and we don't pounce, I might be a little angry.

If he falls to the 2nd and we don't pounce, I'll be angry. Remember Todd Gurley getting drafted in the top 10 with the same injury last year? Yea, that didn't work out too bad for the Rams. I'd be all for Jaylon w our 2nd pick.

Exactly. You draft a guy for more than his rookie season, or even the first game of his rookie season.

Gotta take the long term view with the draft.

the difference is that Jaylon Smith will miss his whole rookie season, Gurley didn't.

Gus can't really afford being handed a jar on the shelf.

1. What's the reasoning behind this, Smith missing his entire rookie season that is? Gurley tore his ACL late in his last collegiate season. Is Smith's injury going to take longer to rehab than Gurley's?

2. If it was me, you don't draft for Gus, or even for yourself; you draft for what's best for the whole organization. If you think Smith in the Second represents that, then it's your professional obligation to do so.

I can't believe I am saying this, but your 2nd point is spot on.

No way he slips to the 2nd either.

Lol, third round. Guy won't make it out of the first regardless of injury.

If he was there in the 2nd, I would have to pull the trigger. Not sure if he could start the season on PUP and play later in the season, but it wouldn't hurt with Poz still here. From a talent standpoint, a 1) Ramsey 2) J.Smith 3) Bullard draft could be insane for our defense.

I was really keen on having him as our first round pick, the injury was a blow. I'd have to say that if he falls to the second round I would love us pulling the trigger and getting him.

As much need as we have to improve right away, Smith could be a great fit at MLB for the future.

Although Caldwell said that this draft is well loaded with defensive linemen and linebacker so I doubt he would go with the Smith option if he feels that there are other guys pretty much on his same level (but healthy).

I still doubt he falls to the second round, I think he'd be gone in around the 25-31 pick.

reports seem to think he will be out the whole season, but I totally agree with your second point and I'd do the same.

Navarro Bowman had a similar crushing leg injury and returned as an All Pro. This guy is a player and worth the risk.

Would anyone have a problem with these three being the Jags linebackers in 2017...

WLB - T. Smith

MLB - J. Smith

Otto/Sam - M. Jack

or

WLB - T. Smith

MLB - R. Ragland

Otto/Sam - J. Smith

About what I would do as the hypothetical GM for Jacksonville?

Personally, I prefer the first scenario but I could live with the second one as well. Would really fall in love with Jack and Jaylon here on the roster.

That any GM is going to draft with his successor's best interest in mind.

You're right, but even if Gus packs up, Dave will likely be here 2 or 3 more years even if things go sideways. He has enough time to take what would likely end up the best value in the draft class.
