Lions hire Kyle O’Brien as director of player personnel

On the same day that the Lions decided to hold onto coach Jim Caldwell, they also made an addition to their front office.


The team announced Friday that they have hired Kyle O’Brien as their new director of player personnel. O’Brien was the director of college scouting for the Jaguars for the last three seasons.


O’Brien is the first major hire on the personnel front since the team appointed Bob Quinn as their new General Manager. At his introductory press conference this week, Quinn said he had some people in mind for personnel jobs and O’Brien’s history with Quinn likely made put him at the top of the list.


Quinn and O’Brien worked together with the Patriots from 2002-2011 when O’Brien was a scout and Quinn held a variety of positions in the front office. O’Brien spent one year with the Chiefs before moving on to Jacksonville.

I guess this is the move Caldwell was referring to.

  Before becoming Jacksonville North,   during Rod Marinelli's days as Lions HC,  Detroit was Tampa Bay North.

 

  I think it is a coincidence with the Jacksonville connection this time around but it's not a coincidence with the beginning of a New England West pattern in Detroit.

Is a scout able to bring any of his notes to his next job or is that considered intellectual property of the Jaguars?

 

I.e, do you think a scout makes backup copies of their research just incase they get a job with another team to pass on to their scouts?

    I've never worked in an NFL personnel department.   But based on everything I have read or seen over the years,  it sure seems like notes can be used in future employment.   The same regarding coaches notes on opposing players and strategy.  

 

    Interestingly,  one thing Bob Quinn talked about at his introductory Press Conference back on Monday is the importance of scouts to communicate their opinions both orally and in written form.

What would be interesting to find out is whether everyone in the organization has access to the combined scouting records of everyone else in the organization. It would probably be prudent to have some of that info only be available to the GM.

Yeah. While obviously unethical, naturally i'm sure he will pass on information to his next scouts. 

 

Since knowledge is really something intangible, it would be hard to limit and or prove any wrong doing in such a situation.

 

Then again, we are talking about Detroit here, so its all probably moot.

  The last sentence you mentioned is a good safeguard for a team.   Yet,  even with that protection,  if the GM leaves for another team,  the information is probably going with the GM.

Congrats to him. Wasnt someone I knew or anything but always kinda cool seeing a Jag(one way or another anyways) do a good enough job to get a promotion. Wish him the best.
