I hope its not Wash getting promoted. This team doesnt need experiments right now. Our dline was ok against the run and horrible with pass rushing, so let's promote him.

To be fair, Branch and Clemons were our two pass rushers. I would prefer an out of house candidate, but Wash could be a good hire here. He's certainly a big upgrade over Babich already. Babich never had success anywhere when it came to playcalling. Wash was always seen as a good coach from even back in Seattle. Give him some more talent on D and let's see what he's got. Still holding out hope for someone with experience, but I'd be ok with Wash.

Quote:Now that it looks like Marrone is staying, I honestly want Gus to take full DC duties since he'll have a guy with prior HC experience to back him up a bit. I wanna see Gus call the plays and work specifically with the defense, because after its all over with we will know who exactly deserves the blame or the praise.

After it's all over at the end of the 2016 season it won't matter.

Our D will still be bottom of the league. And.....

We'll be rid of gus, marrone and pretty much the whole dang staff.

We have to suffer one more guys.

Because Jaguars is our mantra  Wallbash

And who's fault is it that Branch and Clemons were our pass rushers?

Caldwell. Not like it was Wash, which is who we are discussing.

If Fowler wouldn't have tore his acl in rookie minicamp than it wouldn't have even been the case.

Marks too. Sample coulda been a big help at FS as well.

You dont think Washburn had a say to who was out there? I'm sure he did.

Lol, I'm sure he had an input but it's not like the [BLEEP] bums that were on the preseason roster would have changed things if that's who your hinting at.

He had zero say I'm sure with who we signed in fa or who we draft. He may say he likes a guy but I doubt that holds much weight for Caldwell who assembles the roster.

Quote:This right here, our pass rushers were just bad, then you have a bunch of run stuffers which we were decent at, I dont care who the DC is if we dont have pass rushers, QBs are gonna pick us apart
Wait so why was Babich fired? If it's players then it wasn't Babichs fault right?

Our defense had more talent than it showed, but I blame that on the sever lack of pass rush. Can't expect guys to cover for 6+ seconds every time out. Bring back fowler, sign and draft a couple guys, and we should improve a solid bit. Add a new FS whether that's in fa or draft or Sample/Marshall could be that and were getting somewhere.

The lack of changing things up on top of lack of communication on who had to wotry about who that was made obvious on the field was Babich's downfall. Poz already said he rarely heard input from Gus on D.

Quote:Would Branch or Clemons have been better on another team or in a different scheme? Players not plays. Replacing those guys is more than half the battle.

Branch and Clemons were both better in the past. There has been talk of Clemons' age, but DEs don't usually decline with age that early. Branch should be improving.

Scheme? Probably not. Coaching? Very likely. A good coach uses his players in a way that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. There was very little variation in the way Branch was used compared to Clemons.

Also the fanbase wanted blood. And it's not like Wash isn't going to run the exact same scheme. And it's not like the play calling was the issue anyways.

Once the defensive roster is fixed, I'm sure there will be loads of people lauding Wash in his new role for the turn around. So it goes.

Branch's and Clemons' jobs primary mandate was to beat the guy in front of them and pressure the QB on passing downs.

They failed to do that often enough to be considered even remotely effective.  Wash and Babich tried a number of things to help them be more effective, but nothing helped much besides sending six guys and leaving holes in coverage to be exploited.  And they were exploited too often to continue trying that against games with a competent opposing QB.

If a pass rusher can't beat the guy in front of him - even when that guy is a back-up on a team that gives up plenty of sacks - there's only so much a coach can do.

(Personally - I wouldn't rule out Henderson as DC just yet over Wash anyway)

Exactly.

The whole point of lining the LEO up on the weak side every play, is to get your better athlete lined up one vs one, in space against the OT. Clemons and Branch failed to win one on one, over and over again. You can't really blame the coach all that much, when your athletes simply can't ever beat the other guy.

But why doesn't the coach channel his super coaching power and make an average player a great pass rusher?!

Didn't think about that, did ya, huh?! Did ya?!

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

lol Guess we don't even need coaches since they clearly do nothing.

Maybe Wash will be a great coach and a diamond in the rough.....
