Or 2010 where he threw for 3301 yards, 15 TDs and 19 INTs.


..but he sucked in both years. 15 TDs is the most he has ever thrown in a year. His next closest was 13 TDs and 14 INTs for us in 2013.


Why do people pretend he is even average? His numbers are consistently below average.

It's hard to find a backup QB you actually feel confident in if he had to start. Those guys usually try to find a situation where they can compete for a starting role. Henne is at a stage in his career where he probably accepts his backup QB status. He's ok as a spot starter, he's a smart player and a good teammate. I'd re-sign him.

After this season we most definitely should go with a younger alternative... maybe someone that will push Bortles to stay better rather than allow him to get comfy with Papi Henne keeping the pine warm.

 

Maybe a late round pick this draft, or a Tyrod Taylor type FA pick up next offseason... a young guy with potential but needing time or grooming to be anything else.

 

A lot of people look at the back up situation of Houston and say they won with backups... but their whole QB carousel was back ups. Hoyer was the best they got... and he was average at best. Denver's back up is their future starter, the guy they are grooming.

 

I'm OK with the veteran back up for now.

I don't expect him to be overly great.

tbh, Bortles doesn't strike me as a guy who needs to be pushed by threat of losing his starting job.   Look at where he advanced between year 1 and year 2.

I pulled 'em. Seems his biggest yard totals in 3 game increments were coupled with higher INT output. Not sure what 3 game stretch blew your skirt up, but I didn't see it.

I just wanted you to water down the hyperbole a bit...

 

There were 2 occasions within a 3 game stretch where he looked like a competent QB.

One occasion was late in his 2nd year. His comp % was up, and ypa and yards. Yeah, he threw a lot of picks, so did BB in his second year.

And then with us, the run in the 2nd half of the season where Henne was the ONLY one who could get us wins, when Gabbert was still being given a chance.

 

All that being said to say... he isn't a terrible back up to have.

What do you anticipate they do about Henne?  Sounds like they are already negotiating an extension. (heard the rumor on radio)

 I'm guessing keeping Bortles' current "support network" consistent is a big part of their intent in re-signing him.

Personally I'd let Henne walk while bringing in someone exciting. There are a few exciting names out there. If Blake goes down, I want to see someone who will continue to throw downfield.

For what the Jaguars are paying Henne ($4 million a year) he just isn't worth it.  His arm is weak and is a interception machine.  He is good for garbage time but not a good QB

 

Go get a undrafted FA and put the extra money into the Defense or Offensive line

That's what makes me curious about Henne. We know he won't be "starter material". That's fairly certain.


However, what we have seen of him was with a completely different lineup (much, much worse at O-line, TE, WR than what the offense has now IMO).


He's not gonna look like Bortles (BB is the entrenched starter, rightfully so). But I would think Henne would fair much better with the offensive lineup now as compared to 2-3 years ago.

If the line is marginally better next year (fair to expect) then an improved run game will also help Henne should he be called upon. 

 

I think they should develop a PS QB to eventually take Henne's place on the cheap - but it's not unreasonable to think he'd play better with this offense than the last one he led.

You can have Antonio Brown, Gronkowski and Brandon Marshall out there. It still won't change the fact D Linemen know they just need to get their hands up in the passing lane and there is a good chance they can deflect the ball at the line. This is not top priority, but clearly a position we can upgrade the talent level at. There's an IT factor which Henne clearly lacks.

So, wouldn't logic prevail that with Robinson, Hurns, Greene, and Lee, we've got a lot more options to work with than....Justin Blackmon? 

 

I think even Henne could manage a game or two without completely crushing this team IF they do make improvements to the offensive line and running game this off season.

Agreed.  If there's an upgrade to be found, great.  But, I just think the combination of familiarity with the system, the coaches, the personnel, and having the trust of the starting QB to help him develop, there are a lot of intangibles that would need to be surpassed to make it a good signing.  When all is said and done on this, I think the team is comfortable with Henne, and depending on what HE wants to do, it seems pretty likely he'll be back here on the sideline for the upcoming season.  He may decide he wants to go somewhere to compete for a starting gig.  We'll see.

This is what I think some people don't understand. Henne isn't a bad QB.. He's not great either.. But he knows the system, he knows the receivers, he knows the plays. He practices with this offense all season long. If Bortles goes down, Henne should already have a big leg up on any other QB they could bring onto this team for a replacement. QB/WR chemistry is huge and Henne can supply that chemistry in a desperate time of need.
