Not sure why people keep comparing it to Cleveland.  It's not like we're changing a coach every 2 years.  Heck look at the Chiefs before they got Andy Reid.   It's three coaches in 8 years vs 5 coaches in 8 years.  And Del Rio was around for a long time before the 8 year period starts.


Edwards (3 years) -> Haley (3 years) -> Reid (3+)


ETA: As for Lovie Smith, he should have had another year.  It's not like Gus is in his second year here, and showed improvement from year 1 to year 2.  Gus will be in his fourth year.  Very few coaches get a 4th year with the record he does.  I think the Jags have showed immense patience.  But there's such a thing as being too patient. 

 

But you still miss the point with the Cleveland analogy.

 

The argument was made (I apologize because I can't recall who made it just a page or so ago) that the extension sends a bad message to free agents that the team is not trying to win.

 

Cleveland has not had a winning season in a long time, certainly not for the duration of Thomas' tenure there, and not for the duration of Pettine's tenure there.

 

Thomas has been vocal about wanting to win.

 

But he has also been vocal in his support about keeping Pettine.  Why?  Pettine hadn't had a winning season.  Apparently for some reason, Thomas didn't think keeping Pettine was synonymous with endorsing losing.

 

Same thing with Tampa.

 

No, there hasn't been the wild instability here there has been in Cleveland and Tampa.

 

But the point is that extending the coach does not necessarily equal endorsing losing.  Firing the coach does not necessarily equal ending the losing.

Eh, not that weird.  He wanted the D-line coach's opinion on the candidates.  Now, one could say that Wash might be a bit biased toward Todd Wash being the next Defensive Coordinator.  It could be good or it could be bad.  I have no problem with it, unless some candidates didn't want to interview because it was obvious that Bradley wanted Wash as coordinator, and they felt the interview process was meaningless.

Free agents aren't stupid.  If the average Joe fan and the people at 1010XL have figured out it's just an extension to look good for FA's, then I guarantee the FA's and their agents can see it.

Free agents can tell whether an extension is a ruse or not.

 

Free agents can also tell whether or not talent or coaching has been the primary issue here, either through watching film, playing them, or communicating with our players.

With GB at head coach? Absolutely not. I think Blake Bortles and the Allens got better, other than that, it's been lack luster to say the very least.

Listening to his presser right now, and he's definitely got some different views on how the defense will be run moving forward.  Sounds like he's more of a swagger guy.  He wants the defense to be efficient, detailed, and aggressive.  He's not saying it, but it's pretty obvious that attention to detail was lacking under Babich.  Hopefully what he's saying isn't just words, but actual change.

IMO yes. I believe talent on the field to have been this teams issue. I simply do not believe coaching to have harmed this team. Lack of talent has. I want to see Bradley with some real talent on the field. This coming year if he has it I would expect much more success.

Maybe...maybe not.

 

Maybe Wash had disagreements with how Babich ran the defense.  Maybe now, Wash has the ability to implement the changes he couldn't before.

 

Maybe Wash will have the talent to do it successfully.

So, after blasting Babich all year long for being a lousy coordinator, now that he's gone, we need to shift the blame.  Amirite?

 

Wash has done everything he can NOT to throw Babich under the bus, but it's pretty clear from his comments that there were some disagreements with the way things were being run on the defense.  Sounds like Gus put a lot of trust in his coordinator.
