Rams and Browns.

When did they have the Rams?

Quote:I agree as well. As a child back in the early 70's I collected the earlier versions of those plastic NFL helmets out of the candy machines. My mom said I was relentless in pestering her for quarters for them. My favorite helmets were the Rams and the Lions, and that's what got me liking both of those teams. Later on I started watching both teams, but outside of Dickerson & Sanders there was not much to watch.

Warren Beatty was probably the most successful Rams QB during that era, and that's just sad.

We grew up in the same era,  as I also collected the plastic NFL helmets.   This brings back great memories!

Being that you liked the Lions and mentioned Sanders,   are you referring to the late and great Charlie Sanders who played most of his HOF career in the 1970's or to another HOFer Barry Sanders?   Charlie Sanders was my favorite player in my youth.    Both were tremendous players,  who were worth watching regardless of the score and standings.

 Up until 1946.

Quote:The Rams should have never left LA in the first place.

So now STL, LA, & CLE are cities that have all lost more than one NFL team. I might be missing a few more, but that's an awful blemish on city prestige any way you look at it.

In the case of St. Louis though,  in their 49 seasons of NFL football,  they only had 8 playoffs teams.   With the last decade producing horrific overall football and ownership in the last 5 years that was the closest thing to ownership from the ' Major League'  movies.

Of course if St. Louis still had the football Cardinals, it would be a different story.

Assuming that Michael Bidwell would have taken over running the franchise from his father and hired the same people to run the football operation of the team.

The St. Louis Football Cardinals had some very entertaining and high scoring teams in the mid 1970's.   Yet,  they never won a playoff game.

Yes they did.

Jim Hart, Terry Metcalf, Mel Gray, Ottis Anderson (more late 70s)

Too bad for them they didn't have much of a defense. Wherli was decent, but nobody else really stands out.

Meant Barry, since I developed an "adult appreciation" for the game in my late teens. I do remember hearing the name Charlie Sanders thrown around as a kid, though. We moved from Jax to Michigan in 1972 (was 4 years old) and I mostly grew up there, living in Grand Rapids, Lowell, & Mt. Pleasant before moving to California in 1979.

I disagree. The last few seasons of the LA Rams in the 1990's were the closest thing to the Major League movies. 1990-1994. Georgia Frontiere was the epitome of those Indians owner form the movies. Maybe even worse....Killing her husband.

They made some disastrous moves, starting in the aftermath of the Eric Dickerson trade.  Getting rid of Kevin Greene and Jerome Bettis were two of those disastrous moves (though Bettis might have left in 1996 thinking back).

I had always heard rumors about Frontiere, but I was too young at the time it happened to really put it all together and understand or care what I was hearing.

Bettis was traded to Pit after Rich Brooks wanted to use him as a FB. They drafted his replacement in the 96 draft.....Lawrence Phillips.

What Jerome Bettis did in Pittsburgh made Rich Brooks look like an idiot.

Had about a dozen of those as a kid.

My brother collected the striped NFL pencils that they sold from a vending machine from our elementary school. Anyone remember those?

Edit** They used to also sell those smelly pencils as well.. They had grape, apple and other scents too..

Yes, I remember thise as well, but only bought a few and traded other kids to get the teams I wanted. Most of the kids I knew used these for pencil fights so almost none of them survived long enough to face the pencil sharpener.
