Late round picks from the senior bowl.

#1

Players like Spence and Rankin have been mentioned a lot over the past week and will probably go in the first two rounds.

But, in previous years the senior bowl has been far more valuable as a way of finding later round gems like Colvin, Linder and Smith.

So are there any senior bowl players who deserve a look in rounds 3+ ?

Finding senior bowl gems will be a much harder task this year. The ACL tear during senior bowl week for Colvin, and failed drug tests for Telvin, were extenuating circumstances that caused both to drop that I don't really see good examples of this year. There were no major injuries nor were there any major off field concerns this time around, except for Spence who is so darn good it won't matter enough to take advantage of.

This could be tough as guys that stood out may no longer end up as later rounds picks.

Matt Ionidas - DT - Temple.... I'm looking at NFLDraftScout and see him listed as a 5th rounder.  But he looked awesome at the Senior Bowl all week.  He may shoot up draft boards.

Lots of good defensive lineman... gotta imagine one or two of them will fall to 3rd round.  We dont really need any unless they can rush the passer though.

Deion Jones - LB - LSU...  everyone kept comparing him to Telvin.  Cant imagine he'll be sitting there in the 5th round like Telvin did but if so, could be a steal.  Think I've seen him listed as a 3rd rounder.

Nick Martin - C - Notre Dame...  We need a center.  He looked good not great.  But he could be there in the 3rd.

Jonathan Jones - DB - Auburn... probably wont go in the first couple rounds cuz of his size or lack thereof but he is like a little pitbull on the corner.

Eric Murray - DB - Minnesota... similar player to Jones but actually has good size.  NFLDraftScout has him as a 4th rounder.  I bet he is off the board before Jones.

Harlan Miller - CB - SELA.... Mayock kept raving about him.  NFLDraftScout has him as 4th rounder as well.

Nick Vannett - TE - Ohio St... supposedly had a good week.  I didnt see much of him from what I watched but the tv broadcast was a lot lighter this year.  I see him listed as a 3rd rounder.  Lots of these guys Im mentioning seem to be 3rd rounders so obviously could only nab one of them.

Tyler Matakavech - LB - Temple.... another guy who may be there in the 3rd.  we've talked about him in other threads.  got exposed during the game not being able to keep up with Drake out of the backfield but was his only bad play.

Kenyan Drake - RB - Bama.... if he doesnt run a fast 40, I could see him dropping to 4th round or so.  Doesnt really excel in any one phase.  Good RB but not great.  Good WR out of backfield but not great.  Good returner but not great.  And has had two bad injuries.  All purpose backup RBs will often be found in the mid rounds and so could he.

Tyler Ervin - RB - San Jose St.... 5th or 6th round back.  Kinda small.  But very productive.  Tons of yards running, receiving, and in return game.  Just small.  however during the game they were running him up the middle and he seemed to be able to handle it.  Not sure if NFL will just be too big for him though.

Dak Prescott - QB - Miss St.... apparently our coaching staff really liked his leadership ability.  He could make a really good backup.  And with his size and running ability, maybe could be a short yardage option for us.  Which is something we were AWFUL at last year.  Not sure where in the draft he'll go.  I see him listed as 3rd-4th rounder which is probably too high for us but could make a useful 5th rounder or later if he falls.

I would be happy with Nick Vannett in round 3 if TE was a priority. But he would obviously be a backup - not worth passing up a defensive player with starting potential.

Said this in the other thread, but I would take a later round flyer on Gronkowski.

I also would love Dak as Blake's backup. He is also one of those high potential raw players that could be flipped for a nice pick in the future if he grows well.

Yes, he could be a guy to keep an eye on. He seemed to always be hovering around our coaching staff and they spoke very highly of him.

I'd consider him in the 5th round, although it's unlikely he'll be available. Henne is sufficient as a back-up for now.

Dak Prescott? If he will not be available in the fifth round, we can pick him in the fourth.

Gronkowski could be the answer for Yeldon. Imagine them both in the backfield but hang gronk be a true H-back and not anything relating to fullback

Precisely. I was very impressed with Baby Gronk's switch to TE for the Senior Bowl week. I believe Dave/Gus still want to build a team without a FB, so using Gronk as an H-Back would be ideal.

From the KSU website... "Averaged 24.6 yards on 15 career receptions, the highest average in school history among players with 15 or more catches... Of his 15 career catches, nine went for at least 15 yards."

It appears when he was given the opportunity to touch the ball, he made big things happen. Would love to see him here used creatively. Play him as a number 2 TE, occasionally at FB, a powerback in short yardage situations, and all over on STs.

Why would Gronk be the answer for Yeldon if he is not a fullback?
