Jags significantly under the minimum 89 percent cash spending required by next year

Quote:Well to be fair.... They won 2 more games in a much much harder division.

To further illustrate the point, the Raiders wins were:

Ravens, Browns, Chargers, Jets, Titans, Broncos,Chargers

Common opponents were the Ravens (lost to both teams), Chargers (beat the Jags on the road, lost to Raiders twice), Jets (beat Jags at home, destroyed by Raiders on the road), Titans (beat Jags at home, lost to Raiders at home)

The common opponents plus their win vs. the Broncos clearly shows they have more quality wins than the Jags (fins, bills, colts, titans, ravens)

Quote:Give some extensions to some of our own young guys. It would be smart to lock up Hurns - maybe a 5 year, $20-25 million deal? It would be a bargain if he kept up his production, and considering he did this all with a hernia, you figure he's probably good for it.

Hurns might come a bit cheaper if he wants a new deal in 2016 rather than waiting until his rookie contract is up in 2017.  It might also help the 2 Allens stay together if their contracts can be staggered a few years apart.  Having A-Rob on the other side will help Hurns have a productive career, and vice-versa.  Yet there is still the spectre of Marquis Lee.  If Hurns plays for $600k in 2016, hoping for a bigger payday in 2017, what if Lee breaks out in 2016?  The Jags can't pay 3 WRs big money.  The chance for Hurns cashing in may be better now than in 2017.

More money than Jordy Nelson got after going over 1200 yards for the 2nd time in 3 seasons? And after only 2 seasons under his belt as a UDFA, and with very little contract leverage on his side? Ummm, ok, I wish I was on the Jags and you were the GM when it came time to negotiating a contract!

Secure the young talent on the roster first, then play with the rest of the money in FA

Im guessing that its more like a 5/30-35M$ deal.

Highly doubt you could get Hurns for 5-7M a season.

Last year Torrey Smith got 5 yr 40M deal, Randall Cobb got a 4yr 40M, and Maclin got 5yr 55M, would not surprise me to see him and his agent try to get in that ballpark.

I hope we save the cash for Hurns, ARob, Bortles, and Telvin. Don't want to lose any of those guys... ever.

If we give all those guys an average of 7MIL a year tonight.......

We would STILL be just at the minimum cap number.

You realize those guys were free agents, right? They were able to negotiate with any team that wanted them. More interested parties tends to drive the price up. Hurns is under contract for at least the next two years at basically the league minimum wage. The whole point of opening negotiations with a guy like Hurns this early in his career is to sign him to a contract that is under market value but still represents a big raise to the player. Hurns gets to upgrade his lifestyle a bit and obtains some financial security. If he chooses to bet on himself, so be it. He'll have to wait at least a couple of seasons and hope for the best even though a healthy Marqise Lee could potentially put a dent in his production. This is pretty basic stuff. This team wouldn't have much money to spend if you guys did the negotiating.

Only Hurns is eligible for a new deal after 2 seasons. The rest will have to wait another year. I'll bet ARob gets well north of $10 mill and Blake around $20 mill. I hope that happens because it will mean great 2016 seasons from them both.

Hurns has 1 year left on his deal and then he is a RFA. The numbers I threw out will probably be much closer than the 5M you threw out. If I was Hurns' agent, I would probably hang up on you.

You know financially, if Hurns really wants to get paid he shouldn't resign here. There are teams like the Seahawks that would pay him #1 receiver money.

Maybe, but I think Hurns would have a much better career here in Jax. At least he has ARob to draw the double teams.

The thing about Hurns is that he's realistically two seasons away from hitting the market and there is a whole lot of football to be played between now and then. Injuries are a big part of the game and there have been plenty of players who have fallen off after having some good seasons, though I don't think Hurns will be one of those guys.

I doubt he and his agent would want to lock him into a five year deal at around $5million per season, but I could see them taking something along the lines of 4 years/$25million, especially if it's front loaded. He's going to be making the minimum next season and only a couple million in 2017 when he's tendered as an RFA. I think it would be pretty tough to turn down a deal that could net him over $6 million per season over the next two years especially considering everything that can happen in football. With that contract, he'd essentially be forgoing his first two seasons of free agency to guarantee himself some decent money in the short term.

That was also a steal for Green Bay and I wouldn't consider that the norm.

Edit: Nevermind

Spending money is good but there has to be players out there.  You wouldn't want to give ex-wide receiver and current cocaine junky Matt Jones a 10 million dollar contract.  There has to be players to justify the money spent.

I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Do you think there's any chance the team doesn't keep him after 2016? Does restricted free agency pose some difficult hurdle that I'm not aware of? No. So 2016 and 2017 - that's 2 years, like I said. $5 million a year would mean a $4.5 million raise in 2016 and another $2.5 million raise over what I imagine will be a 2nd round tender when he hits restricted free agency (Tashaun Gipson got that and he was a UDFA as well). Maybe he gets a bit more than $5 mill but I just don't see how Nelson gets $8 mill, when he's closer to free agency, and, you know, umm, better - but you think Hurns will get $10 mill after 2 years in the league. As I said, the whole point of this deal is to sign a guy for less than market value. A bird in the hand...
