If this was our offseason, we would be in GREAT shape going into next year.

Gibson was rated the 187 best safety in the NFL on PFF. I did not know they had that many.

And he year before that he was rated as the 10th best safety overall by PFF. One bad year coming off a MCL is not enough to scare me off from signing him.

Rather have this then draft a safety to groom. Similar to our Sammy Knight singing.

Sammie Knight actually filled the role well. Albeit for one year.
Only a chump boos the home team!

He was actually a significant contributor for the defense that year.

Perfect signing.

He forgot we need linebackers too - and not just for pass rush purposes.

I think you could make a strong argument that every position, except OG, WR and LS, on the Jags have a need.  I think Dirocco is just pointing to the top 2 areas, pass rush and free safety.

No.  He didn't.

Those he listed are simply the most urgent needs.  We have three competent starters at LB.

Upgrades in depth and speed are likely being sought after at MLB,  but starting Skuta,Poz and Telvin is much more preferable to starting Branch/Clemons at LEO and Evans at FS.

Lastly, and most importantly, the question was about free agency. The LB situation is more likely to be addressed through the draft.  That's where you find speed at a good value.

Vernon gonna look really good rushing the passer opposite of Fowler.....

Ramsey gonna look real nice intercepting passes after those dudes create pressure.

Yeldon gonna pick up first downs running behind Mack and Linder in the right.

If Mike DiRocco only wants to name urgent needs, he should include that word in the sentence. Just saying "two needs" can only mean we don't need to upgrade any other positions.

That is all I have to say until a moderator moves this thread to the appropriate forum.

Yeah. Umm. It's his blog. He can do what he wants.  Also it clearly says FREE AGENCY in the question he's addressing.

And - as I already pointed out - the Jags are much more likely to find their speedy nickel-package MLB in the draft. NOT free agency.

My concern about linebacker is that most teams line up on most of their defensive plays in the nickle defense. So when we are in nickle, obviously Telvin is one of the linebackers, but who is the other one? I like Poz, he's a good linebacker, he's a tackling machine, but he does not cover well. We need a starting caliber linebacker who can cover.

So, yes, we have three competent starters as you say. But only on first down. Second and third down? I don't think so.

But if you're making a list of defensive needs, LB is not first or even second.

1. Pass Rush

2. FS

3. LB

Right.

Which is why many (myself included) are tossing around the idea of drafting someone like Myles Jack to play in pass-defense packages.

Depending on down and distance - Poz would still have a meaningful role as a run-stuffer in the short term.  I wouldn't limit him to "only first down," personally -  but that's for Gus and Wash to figure out.
