Quote:Olivier Vernon to command annual $14-$15M?

Olivier Vernon | MIA

(February 15, 2016 3:04 PM EST)

The Miami Herald expects free agent RE Olivier Vernon to command $14-$15 million per season.

Vernon has "just" 14 sacks over the past two seasons, but is only 25. He has 25.5 QB takedowns over his last 48 games. $14-$15 million is not a surprising guess. Both the Miami Herald and ESPN's James Walker have reported the Dolphins have yet to make Vernon an offer. Reporter Armando Salguero "isn't sure" the Fins want to keep him. The franchise tag remains a possibility.

That's a pretty steep asking price. Is he worth it?

I don't think he's worth much more than half of that per year. 14 mil per year?! Please. This guy cost his team 2 separate games bc of stupid unsportsmanlike penalties at the end of the game. He's not a double digit sack guy. I could see overpaying a bit because of his age and potential upside, maybe 9-10 million per year. 14 million? Not just no, but hell no he's not worth that.

Doesn't matter we are gonna get Bosa anyways.

Hopefully we can get Danny or Malik from Denver. Also nice would be one of the Rams CB's. Preferably Trumaine, and the cherry on top is Osemele from Baltimore.

If you want a good productive young pass rusher, the FA market is now $11m plus a year (thank you Saints and Texans).  If the amount is too high, then use the draft to hopefully find the young talented pass rushers at a relative discount.

I'm not sure he's worth that tbh. Read Fins forums they don't seem that fond of him/they aren't going to be that sore losing him. They say he is a liability against the run, draws dumb penalties (we witnessed this first hand), is a dirty player, and while he has a lot of pressures they really wish he would turn those into sacks. Not sure I want to spent $14 million on that and potentially take snaps away from Fowler  and possibly Bosa.

Tough decision at that price. I'd probably pass and hope Bosa is our pick. If he is not, might have to consider Spence, although Jack would be my next choice after Bosa. I like other free agents like Jackson, Gipson (he'll bounce back) and Jenkins more.

Id take him. We have 80 million on the books to spend and thats before the cuts of Clemeons, Beadles, and Gerhart which would net us about another 10 million. He's better than anything we currently have and has shown he can get to the qb realitvely good with sacks and constant pressures. We have the money to get this guy and he most likely hasnt reached his potential. In our scheme he would always get 1 on 1 match ups and be a force for us.

Pass rusher dont come cheap even average ones. Hell Vinny Curry put up 19 sacks over the same time frame and got almost 10 million a year.

Go get him Dave

14 million AAV isn't going to seem that crazy with the salary cap rising faster and faster w/ the new TV money. If you want the #1 pass rusher on the market it's going to cost ya.

I'd wager that Caldwell and company already have an offer already prepared for his agent,  and it's north of 12 million per year.

I'm not one of the people on the MB on the Vernon wagon but if you want a young pass rusher your gonna have to pony up a lot of cash

Why are people against paying the man? What's our other options? We need pass rushers and the only way to get them is to pay for them.

Yep your right. In 2-3 years time 14 million a year for a young pass rusher like Vernon will actually be good value.

Not sure. There are a variety of reasons I guess.  I'm not against paying him. While the amount may seem ludicrous, it's simply the nature of the beast in this league.

Somebody's gonna' pay him. May as well be the Jags.

With a trillion dollars to spend, the team can afford Vernon's asking price.  Would you rather tag the punter?  This team will have to overpay to get any of the top tier FA's.

Good point.... We should have used Lewis as the primary TE target all year. We would have been better.....

Those dumb Broncos used FA to get TJ Ward, Sanders, Talib, Ware, Manning, Marshall, Daniels.....

I swear people here are bipolar. First we shouldnt have gone this draft only route then when we have accumulated the money to spend on on players we shouldnt do that because it never works or they cost to much... geez

With so many first round busts not on the roster forming a solid nucleus, this team needs to use free agency to supplement the draft to get the talent to a respectable level.  Sure, there is a risk, but I saw on NFL Live yesterday that about 50% of Denver's starting roster for the Superbowl was either free agents or trades.  Free agency can be productive.
