What he does to earn his keep will never be seen by the fans. It all happens behind closed doors during team prep. The team is on record as saying he is perfectly suited for that role and does it exactly to their expectations. The fact that they re-signed him goes to prove that. It's not about snaps with the backup QB. There are things he does, and the team thinks he does them well enough to keep him around.

 

Forgive me if I take their opinion of Henne over yours.

Well, you can believe whatever you'd like. Oscar Wilde was a writer, a poet, an essayist....The person I quoted is a linguist. Both use and study language usage. In the present situation, it's my opinion that the linguist has it nailed.

If Bortles goes down, it really doesn't matter who is sitting behind him. The second coming of Joe Montana isn't just sitting out there waiting to be signed to warm the benches of Everbank field.

The Jaguars need to worry about winning games, period. I could "understand" the frustration of having Henne as the backup if the Jaguars were a top contending team. Then, the thoughts of "if Bortles goes down for any length of time we're screwed".

But, right now, they're not a winning team anyway. Seriously, if Henne had to play a majority of the season, what would happen? The Jags would win 3 games instead of 5?


The Jags have to keep building/improving the defense, and the team as a whole has a hard enough time winning games with the entrenched starters anyway.


By the time Henne's new deal is up in 2 years, this team should be in a much better/improved situation by then. But for now, I think Henne is perfectly fine for the situation he's in currently. He's not a starter, but a backup.


Plus, I'm still unsure that what we saw from him 2-3 seasons ago is what we'd still see. That team's offensive supporting cast was dreadful (other than having Blackmon for about 4 games, lol).

- MJD was done after taking a huge pounding on 2013 playing mostly with Gabbert.

- They didn't have ARob, Hurns, JT. They had Shorts and Lewis. Seriously.

- The O-line was much more terrible than what the Jags have now (I know it's hard to believe, but true)


Henne has also had a couple extra years of experience by sitting/watching/learning from the sidelines the past 2 years. That seems to help some other guys.

Maybe,, MAYBE Henne would fair better with the new offensive unit. That's yet to be seen.


Until the Jags start, you know, actually winning games consistlently, I'm not too worried about the backup situation.

You're acting as if Henne has never won a football game before. He's plenty capable of winning as many games as any BACK UP QB in the league. What are you looking for to happen? Any team that loses it's starting QB is in a bad place, period. You're being unrealistic.
