Dolphins place transition tag on O.Vernon

They'll have a chance to match another teams offer (just like Alex Mack two years ago).

Will they have the space? I'm assuming they'll rework Suh and Cam Wake's deals.
Almost the Alex Mack situation all over again except the Browns had the cap room to match the Jaguars' offer. The Dolphins do not. I think the Jags offer 4 years between 50-60 million
Their choice now to match the offers that will come and keep him or not.
If they match they'll be fighting with the cap for the imminent future without even having a team close to winning and even if they restructure Suh deal. Will be interesting to see how this will play out. Make them pay if they really want to keep him. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

We need him. Tricky situation, though.[/quote It's only tricky for the Dolphins, if the Jags really want him our cap situation would make it nearly impossible for Miami to retain him, we could frontload the contract, Miami has like $8M in cap space, I don't think they could afford to match a front loaded contract.
True. But the waiting period could hurt us if other DE are gone.
I would only consider it if no one else was available.

Seems like we can get him if we want him with relative ease. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
If the Dolphins somehow are able to match whatever offer is placed, I want their franchise reviewed for negligent reporting lol. I still don't know how they worked that Suh deal. Shady, shady dolphins.....
GO JAGS!!
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

Shady, shady dolphins..... They paid him a base salary of 800,000 last year to get him on the roster. This year he is due 28 mil. If the restructure his deal all it does is kick the can. Then they end up like the saints owing a 36 Year old Drew Bress 30 mil for one year lol. They screwed themselves.
Front load the first year and there's no way the Dolphins can match. No brainer.

Another way for the Jags to screw the Dolphins is to front load the contract. Obviously Vernon will want this because he will almost certainly get paid the first few years no matter what. Even if he is a bust, he won't get cut until after at least a couple of seasons. The Jags have tons of cap room now and in a few years they may need some cap room to pay Bortles, Smith, Robinson, etc. The Dolphins want to do what they did with Suh, pay nothing the first year and back load the contract.
I think he is ours if we go after him. Dave will structure the contract like he has with other free agents we have acquired by front loading them, no way Dolphins can afford to match our offer or any offer.
How were they able to afford the transition tag? If you place a tag on a player don't you have to have the cap space available?

Fins have zero chance of keeping him. As others have said, someone will just front load his contract. They'll never be able to match it. I just hope that's us.
We should be heavily front loading all our contracts anyway given our cap space plus contracts coming up in the next 2-3 years
Looking at it, Dolphins are taking a bad gamble if they want to keep him.
To save 3 millions compared to the Franchise tag, they will now have to match an offer that can be frontloaded or setup anyhow another team wants. All this for 3 millions this year. We need some pass rush.
