** The Official Malik Jackson Thread **

Quote:This is one big reason I don't like the move. Grossly overpaying is bad enough, but paying a player $15 million that will see a lot of sideline with Marks and Odrick eating into his reps seems like a bad idea.

Jackson will be the 6th highest paid non qb in the league. He's not even a top 50 player, let alone top 6.

I suspect here will be a lot of regret and second guessing on this contract at the end of the season.

Having said all that, he's a good player and for all intents and purposes a Jag now so I wish him the best and will be rooting for him.

Malik will not be seeing a lot of time on the sideline. Him rotating will be at the expense of other players coming off the field, not him.

Quote:Afraid to put Jackson at RDE in a 4-3?

Forget "LEO," we're not likely to ever meet him/her/it.  Might as well be Larry, Curley, or Moe.

You're over analyzing it.  I'd say over thinking, but I'm not sure you've really thought about it all that much.

You can put up the front four I had, and still have Fowler, Poz, and/or Telvin at LB depending on down.  Don't box your imagination only by what you think you know.

These players give us flexibility like we haven't had when so short on talent.  That's not even considering who else we may add.
Agree. We've got the cap room, many of the existing contracts are structured to leave little or no dead money after 2-3 years so plenty of flexibility to sign our rising starts, and adding a solid talent upfront is never a bad thing.

Better to sign a young ascending player than a declining older one.

Overpaid or not remained to be seen. There are many factors that will make this signing successful or not. Signing free agents is always a risk but you must take a risk to get somewhere.

Quote:I'd bet a thousand bucks that Jackson is on the field for 80 percent of the defensive snaps at one position or another in 2016.

I don't get the concern.

Considering Odrick played the most snaps on the line last year at 75% and the next highest was Alualu at 59% and both play a role that Jackson fills, I would take that bet. Smile

If Bradley was willing to change the basic defense I'd agree. Having Marks and Jackson on the field at the same time might work wonders, ala Stroud and Henderson. But Bradley's defense depends on having a nose tackle on the line, and only in 3rd and long (10+) situations was that ever changed. And I don't ever remember Odrick and Alualu both lining up at DE.

Maybe Caldwell is looking ahead to the post-Bradley era.

Then why are YOU the only one suggesting it?

You aren't trying to slip in a strawman, are you?

The signing is great but too much money.

Your suggestion, not mine, had two 5Ts, Odrick and Jackson, lined up at left and right DE. I was pointing out that the Jags haven't done that in the Bradley era.

Based off what? Your opinion?

The best part is that I read that even after this signing, the Jaguars STILL will have more room under the salary cap than any other team in the NFL!  Wow!  This is going to be a good off-season!

Don't be too sure, Duke007.

It appears we have lost Irvin.  It appears Jenkins is staying with the Rams.

If the Fish don't remove the tag from Vernon, IDK what we're going to do about the defense.

Well Bradley has mentioned already this off season that his defense is flexible. I'm sure Wash is onboard with bringing Jackson on as well. We may see some much needed tweaks done to the defense shortly.

Sean Smith, Weddle, Gipson, Ayers, Walter Thurmond, Casey Heyward, etc. all say hello.

Not going to get all the top guys in FA. We got 1 stud and a very solid piece so far. Vernon is definitely pretty important, but I'd take safety/corner help too.

If I never hear Leo again, it'll be too soon.

My question is, will we still spend a draft pick on one of the many good D tackles in the draft, with the current roster where Davis and Jones just resigned, Jackson, Odrick, Miller, Marks, Alualu, Bennett.  This draft just seems to be too deep at that position not to take one of these players. I like Reed myself. And Nkemdiche.

Why do people care so much about money?? 1. It's not your $ 2. I guarantee you are not smarter than the jags brass at cap management.

Quote:Just listened to Woody Paige's take on this. Man, he is salty. I get the feeling Bronco fans really don't like us between 96 and is constantly plucking their players away. You would think they'd be on cloud 9 after the Super Bowl.

Also don't get this national narrative that Julius is a bust here.

He missed a few games and was pretty invisible for a few games after that.  He certainly started looking like the guy we signed him to be by the end of the season, but a lot of people (Jags fans included) had already made their minds up about him by then.
