Myles Killebrew

Anyone else in love with this guy and see what a great backer he would be at a little higher weight? Small school guy who will last till 3rd or 4th. Knocks everyone backwards.

Mayock said it best.  I don't know where he plays, but I want him on my team.

I'd love to have Killebrew on the squad.

He'd be a great 4th round pick, but probably will be gone. Wouldn't take him before that since we have 2 strong safeties and still have need at offensive line, linebacker and pass rush.

I could see him in the 3rd.

I don't know that we have a solid SS on the team, plus, he's kind of a tweener between SS and OLB.

Kid can play, and he'd definitely add a level of physicality to our D that we could use.

Plus.. he can tackle... how many did our Safeties miss last year?

It is hard to imagine the Jags taking a safety (hybrid or not) before the fourth after signing a player as young as Gipson along with an evident battle for the SS starting job already set to play out.

Would say a lot about their confidence in him if they select him.

I.E. - they'd have to see him as an immediate upgrade and long term answer with a defined role, IMO.

Agreed.

Personally, I think he IS that immediate upgrade at SS.  Let's face it.  Cyp can't tackle.  He's proven that.  I don't see that drastically turning around anytime soon.

Killebrew absolutely can, and with authority, plus with the potential ability at OLB it gives more flexibility on Defense as far as giving different looks to opponents as well.

While we do currently have a competition at SS... no one has really stood out, at least not in a positive way.

Imagine a draft of Miles Jack at 5, shoring up the need at OLB for speed/coverage, a guy like Dodd or Lawson, should they somehow fall to round 2, and then Killebrew at SS, it would be hard not to look at our Defense and get pretty excited about it.

I'd be excited too, but I'd have tempered expectations on the rookie impact. Even for a box safety in this scheme - there's a learning curve.

I still have a small glimmer of hope in Cyp playing better when more dedicated to the box. But, yeah,  his tackling has been too inconsistent and he's taken some bad angles and missed some gaps.

And we really have no clue about Sample since his, wait for it, "sample-size" of film is so small.

While a guy like Killebrew may be an immediate upgrade - I'm still leery of using a third rounder simply due to what I see as more pressing needs. I'd not dislike the pick if they go that way  - I'd only wonder if more urgent fixes could have been addressed.

I dont think strong safety is our problem. Between Sample and Josh Evans, if Cyprien struggles i dont feel too bad about SS yet. Remember we took Sample in the 3rd last year and with Tashaun starting at FS this year, Sample will definitely have a chance to take the job. IMO he will.

From a competition stand point tho, if killebrew falls to the 4th, id take him. Give me a CB, a DE and a C before him.

I wish I could share your optimism.  I just see him missing tackles earlier by being closer to the line.  At least then the speedbump happens sooner, maybe helps someone else cleanup.

I actually think we're in a good spot going into the draft "needs" wise.  Really, we just need a solid Edge Rusher, which I'm confident we can find a guy in Rd2 between Lawson, Dodd, Floyd, etc.

Not to mention, if we do manage to land Beacham today, we may have some major improvement on the line.  It's possible that it would cause a move of Joekel to LG which then frees up Cann or Linder to move to C and I'm suddenly feeling better about our line.  Or perhaps Beacham moves inside to Guard, since I hear he's got that nasty streak to him and has either played some G or shown the ability to.  Definitely speculating here though.

With Prince at CB and Colvin back in the Nickle, Gipson at FS, to me SS is one of the most "improve-able" positions (assuming Jack at LB)

Maybe, but all these additional pieces we are adding could possibly allow cyprien to focus more on his own role and play up to his hype. Here's hoping.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

I personally think he is an outside backer in the NFL. And could play inside and out with added weight. But I'm bias. i went to Southern Utah with him haha
