Yeah, if that's what went down I don't blame them for letting him walk.  We aren't going to sign him to a 5 year 40 million contract anointing him the starter.  It's where if he's healthy and thinks he can beat out Luke then he'll be the starter and get a big payday next year.  If he doesn't like that then to heck with him.

Even Ivory and Prince have said that nothing was promised to them.

 

Only ones of the signings that were guaranteed were Malik (and even he said that he's expected to move around) and Gipson (who really didn't have anyone to compete with).

Besides - these conversations aren't so black and white IMO. I think Dave is perfectly capable of making clear his expectations to an incoming FA.  

ie: 

"We fully expect that you'll take over the starting role at LT and Luke will become depth or catch on elsewhere if the right trade comes along.   BUT - the guy who looks best in September gets the start and nothing's guaranteed." 

 

If a player needs more assurance than that.... see quoted post above.

Agreed, especially since he's not even 6 months removed from the injury.

 

That doesn't mean he shouldn't try to secure a starting gig before signing somewhere.

 

I think it's funny to see the usual suspects talking about what this like the front office has made some sort of mistake.  Offering him a deal to COMPETE with Joeckel for the starting spot this year is reasonable.  Odds are, he wins the competition.  Joeckel is more or less insurance for the knee issue.  Nothing more.  But, the team isn't going to just hand him the starting job if he's not recovered enough to hold on to the gig. 

 

He hasn't signed anywhere, and that knee injury is more than likely going to have the same impact with any other teams he might visit with.  It sounds like Pittsburgh is ready to move on, so as long as he hasn't signed elsewhere, I don't see this as a miss by the front office.

 From what I've read, there doesn't seem to be a huge sense of urgency on Pittsburgh's part to get a deal done.  It makes sense that he'd want to try to remain there.  In the end, he may have to make other arrangements.  Jax has made their case.

It seems those tweets yesterday were more a bluff from Beachum with the "help" of Josina Anderson rather than the Jags really wanting him that bad to call him back while on the airplane lol.
