What does everyone think about these rule changes?


I like the idea of ejecting players for too many personal fouls.


Also that if players change positions, they must change jersey numbers too.

I think it is bs for only 2 personal fouls to dictate if someone can play or not.

3 is understandable but, 2, no.

Personal foul penalties happen more frequently in the NFL, IMO. Some penalties that get called as personal fouls are very "ticky-tack" calls.


If a player gets a personal foul penalty that is questionable to begin with, does he then play a little less aggressive in fear of getting kicked out of the game? Probably so.


I don't like that one. It's just one more thing that is watering down the sport and taking the aggressiveness away from defenses in particular.


Pretty soon, there is not going to be much defense at all. It's going to turn basically into Arena League, where offenses just basically go up and down the fields and post high scores.


The only chances for defense will be INTs and fumble recoveries (if the player doesn't get called for a personal foul while making a turnover, lol).

There are a few of the rule changes that I do think make sense.

 

8. By Buffalo; to amend Rule 15, Section 2, Articles 1, 4, and 5 (Instant Replay) to permit a coach to challenge any official's decision except scoring plays and turnovers.

 

12. By Minnesota; to amend Rule 15, Section 2, Article 1 (Coaches' Challenge) to eliminate the requirement that a team be successful on each of its first two Instant Replay challenges in order to be awarded a third challenge.

 

13. By Washington; to amend Rule 16, Section 1, Articles 1, 4, 6 and 7 (Overtime procedures) to eliminate overtime periods in preseason games.

 

14. By Washington; to amend Rule 15, Section 2, Article 4 (Reviewable Plays) to subject personal foul penalties to Instant Replay review.

 

I think the expansion of the rules for what is reviewable would eliminate a lot of the lousy officiating that we've seen in recent years. Especially when we're talking about personal fouls that, upon review, were bad calls. 

 

As far as eliminating OT in preseason games, that's a no-brainer.  It's a meaningless game to begin with.  Ending in a tie doesn't change that. 

 

I like the idea of each team just getting 3 challenges.  Not this two and a bonus if you win those.

Eliminating Overtime in Preseason Games - Makes sense.  Not sure why they didn't do this already tbh.

Unsportsman LIke Conduct Ejection?  I'm not sure.  Depends on which Unsporstman Like Conduct Penalties can lead to ejection.

Not sure how I feel about the ejections with 2 personal fouls. Like stated above a player could play less hard or get baited into another. Depends on the foul. Personally, I feel if you throw a punch or Suh someone's groin you should be out of the game immediately as opposed to letting it happen again.


I'm for eliminating preseason OT


Intentional grounding. Ugh. Either eliminate it or make any throw that's intentionally threw away grounding. Pick one or the other.. He threw it away but he ran out of the tackle box and got rid of it Out of bounds before he got smashed. Either eliminate or make it an easy call. Heck, call them all. Defense needs a rule in their favor.


Challenges. Sure it'll make games longer but never been a fan of earning another challenge. Either make it 3 or keep it at 2. Also let them be able to challenge more things.

I like the idea of expanding the intentional grounding rule. It's such a cop out when the quarterback gets chased to the sidelines, then throws it out of bounds or at the feet of the closest player. If the pass is only thrown to avoid a sack, it should be called intentional grounding.

 

I also like the idea of moving the first down marker if you get a "half the distance to the goal line" penalty. If you're at your own 10 yard line and get a holding penalty, you get moved back 5 yards and the first down marker is moved forward 5 yards, making it a 1st and 20 instead of a 1st and 15.

 

Other rule changes I'd like to see but can't see them getting passed are eliminating the spot foul for defensive pass interference(make it 15 yards like in college) and eliminating automatic first downs for any penalty that isn't a 15 yard penalty. I'm tired of seeing offenses get automatic first downs for illegal contact or defensive holding penalties. Make it a 5 yard penalty and continue the drive.

I'd only be in favor of eliminating the penalty for intentional grounding IF all passes that land behind the line of scrimmage become fumbles.

Note- this would eliminate the "was his hand moving forward?" nonsense and the "tuck rule" and there would be less need for interpretation on replays.  

 

Let the QB throw it wherever he wants, from wherever he is, with no fear of penalty.  Just make him pay if he doesn't get the ball back to the line of scrimmage.  

 

And make a ball tipped at the line, that lands behind the line, a fumble as well.

I agree. Only change to the playoffs I could see is reseeding. Win division you're in, but not garanteed a home game.

Expand when the league expands, when 4 to 8 more teams are added, then expand the playoffs.

It kind of seems like a two yellow card in soccer rule which gives you a red and an ejection. Those are violent and careless fouls which I feel some personal fouls are(I.e. head hunting blows). In college basketball they have fouls, technicals, and flagrant 1 and flagrant 2. Flagrant 2 is an automatic ejection. I just feel if there is some kind of ejection to some of these penalties(repeated in game) then there's should be some consequences. If not the game can get chippy and out of hand. Like the steelers/bengals playoff game.

Personal fouls are called about the same about of time as in college. If you get two, you deserve to be booted.

I just heard that rule passed for this upcoming season. Actually, it's not for personal fouls, it's for two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. That is something I agree with.


Personal fouls cover a pretty wide range of infractions. However, unsportsmanlike conduct is obviously subject to ejections.


It's a good rule.

It won't. Teams will just stay high and block on tracks more. IMO this is more effective in a zone scheme anyway.
