DeForest Buckner
|
Quote:Conklin didn't dominate him. I've watched the tape twice now, one before someone said that and once after. They both got after each other. Buckner beat Conkline multiple times/made him look bad, same goes for Conklin. Conklin is also a bonafide top 10-15 prospect in this draft, so I don't see why you expect a guy to dominate a guy like that. Conklin should be a very, very solid RT in the NFL. Buckner made 0 impact that game, but it is just one game. His tape against Stanford and Oregon State were dominant. His potential at that size is unreal, I have to admit.

He's not a finished product and has massive upside is what I'm saying, and if someone is seriously saying Conklin "owned him" all game than I just don't know what their watching.

Quote:He didn't own him, but Buckner certainly didn't win that matchup. To each their own. I disagree. I'm noticing that on a lot of the plays where he didn't do much it was quick passes where he didn't exactly have time/chance to do much. We show less advertisements to registered users. I feel like most say it was a draw or Buckner won slightly.I just don't see how you can say he got dominated. Watched it closely twice now, neither time did I feel that. Wasn't his best game or anything but surely don't get "dominated" or anything, was pretty even. Each got the best of the other at times.
Conklin was handling him pretty good. That first touchdown was one on one and he stoned him. There were a couple of plays where Buckner would have made a nice play if the QB wasn't releasing the ball quickly..on Conklin I'll add. Overall, Conklin won by a slim margin.

Overall, Conklin won by a slim margin.Even if that's the case, I don't see why that should worry anyone on Buckner. The guy needs some coaching but the upside is tremendous and he has a chance to be an elite talent and showed it quite often last year. I want Jack or Ramsey, just saying a guy like Buckner would be a nice get too. Not like he's my top guy because obviously the fit isn't great but I want an elite level talent added to this defense as it's needed badly, and there is only a couple guys at best in this draft that will end up becoming that. Buckner just might be one of them, he certainly has the tools to do so.

What I like most about him is the potential. IF he becomes a dominant force, along with that size and incredibly large hands, the all of a sudden, we have another monster on the DLine. I want the Jags to roll out a huge, intimidating defense.

Although it sounded like from what I've read that they plan to use Malik exclusively at 3T, not move him around, so that makes the chances of Buckner improve I'd say as Alualu may be OK and decent depth but besides Odrick, not much at that 5T.
Quote:He fits the defense yes but we have a cluster of solid 3T/5T type talents is what I'm saying. I just feel like he could play anywhere up front besides the LEO position. He's probably going to be better than Alualu and Abry Jones, so that's an immediate upgrade in terms of the rotation. Dave said it best.. We need a fleet of guys so that we are basically fresh all game and especially late in the season.

Dave said it best.. We need a fleet of guys so that we are basically fresh all game and especially late in the season. We have a "fleet" of guys at every position other than the one we badly need it from. 3T - Malik, Sen, Bennett, Tyson, Davis (lightning) NT - Roy, Abry 5T - Odrick, Tyson, Malik, Abry LEO - Rookie coming back from ACL and...who? Ryan who they didn't give snaps there despite us badly needing it? Chris Smith who did get a shot then boot back to the bench? Skuta? Quote:We have a "fleet" of guys at every position other than the one we badly need it from. Malik sounds like he'll be strictly playing 3t. Alualu is ok at best. We likely won't be getting a LEO at 5 anyway. It's more likely in Rd 2 or 3. Jack or Ramsey is more likely. Regardless, we need elite talent, if Dave thinks Buckner can be a cornerstone piece, you take him. Having a solid player at a position shouldn't stop that. And if not 3T, then the other spot for him is 5T. The only LEO candidate at 5 are Bosa/Lawson, who also have the ability to move all over our scheme (bosa) We do need elite talent. From my perspective though, its Bosa/Ramsey 1a/1b. Jack 2. Then gap for Buckner. Jack/Buckner would flip depending on Jack's knee. It's not about knocking Buckner. It's that...these guys are all similarly graded, and in my view higher than Buckner. Bosa, Ramsey, and Jack all have a spot on this defense immediately. Buckner does not. So why take Buckner over those guys? Now if somehow all the other guys are taken (or Jack's knee is really bad long term), then I'd settle for Buckner. Buckner's weakness is the same weakness that Stroud and Henderson had coming in, and something many other tall DTs shared. I still don't know where he'd play. He's quick inside, which seems to be when he does his most damage. And while he's tall like the other players he's compared to (Campbell), he's not as big as those guys (Buckner looks tall/lean compared to those guys). I think he's strictly a single-gap penetrating DT for us, same as Marks. Quote:They've talked about Malik moving around. And if not 3T, then the other spot for him is 5T. I know they said that previously, but Malik just said they have told him that he will mainly just stick to 3T and that's the only position he's focusing on. Pretty sure Gus said some things at the luncheon as well because media members talked about it as well. You say they are similarly graded, but I'm sure Caldwell has his favorites. I don't think any player is ranked equally with another. If he views Bosa higher than Buckner, go ahead and take him. If not though and he indeed likes Buckner more, than you take him. Caldwell and Gus seem to think differently than you regarding Buckner too and how he'd fit. He said he was versatile and can play anywhere besides LEO on our front four I'm fairly sure. I know he views him more than just a 3T. Quote:I know they said that previously, but Malik just said they have told him that he will mainly just stick to 3T and that's the only position he's focusing on. Pretty sure Gus said some things at the luncheon as well because media members talked about it as well. I haven't heard a recent interview on Malik stating that he'll be strictly 3T. I did read the transcript of DC and Gus talking about Buckner moving around capable of playing every spot other than LEO. I think he *can* play 5T. But we'd be wasting him there. 3T IMO is where he can make the most impact. Still doesn't change my original argument in this thread. We have TONS of guys who can play 3T and 5T already. Even NT. We have zero proven LEOs. And the main one they are projecting there is a rookie who has yet to play a down in the NFL, coming off ACL, and hasn't played football in a year and a half Like I said, after Bosa/Ramsey/Jack....its all bunched up together, in which case, fine, take Buckner. I wouldn't pass up on any of those top three (unless Jack's knee has questions of long-term health) through. Quote:I haven't heard a recent interview on Malik stating that he'll be strictly 3T.I saw the quotes/tweets too and while I definitely don't care enough to go back and find them, I believe it was 'primarily' not 'strictly' which is kind of semantics but not totally. I think the split will probably be like 80% 3T and 20% 5T. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I respect Lageman and his opinion, as he is a film room rat and has experience. He said this morning on 1010xl that he views 3 guys as being "freaks", namely Jack, Tunsil, and Buckner (in that order). Buckner is a possibility.
Interesting article on Buckner which according to the guy who write it "shows limited skillset" and with a comparison to Calais Campbell in the end.

4/25: "Lots of rumblings about the Bolts taking Buckner over Jalen Ramsey and Laremy Tunsil." - Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Network 2/26: "The Dallas Cowboys have a legitimate interest in Oregon defensive lineman DeForest Buckner." - Pat Yasinskas, WalterFootball.com What are the odds that Buckner will even be there by #5? If the Jaguars passed on Leonard Williams would they draft Buckner this year? |
