Caldwell has done an outstanding job to date. My biggest complaints relate to his first draft, but he's been great at drafting since, along with having axed a few good players among the many waived while transforming the roster early on. The latter is understandable though because the Gene Smith stain on this team was that bad. Otherwise, with jury still out on his HC hire is Gus Bradley, there's only praise to offer. He's a boss in free agency, he seems to have a rapport with other GMs lending him some maneuverability in the draft, and his overall big picture for this team keeps them headed in the right direction. The Jaguars face an incredibly tough schedule this particular season, however, I see them turning the corner nonetheless and finally winning their fair share of games.


 

So do we lock him up? I'm not worried about that because I trust Khan to secure his services well into the future, and I'm sure he knows best.

While he has upped the talent level, he's going to have to either prove that he made a good decision with Gus OR prove it with his next hire. In other words, we need to win.

 

Then we can talk about extensions.

While the "norm" has been for teams to re-sign FO personnel as their contracts come up unimpeded by other teams, it doesn't mean that another needy team couldn't try (and succeed) at doing so. I forgot the name of the player, but a few seasons back, the Browns waived him injured because other teams never claim them on waivers. Low and behold, Jacksonville claimed the player who's name I can't remember. The point being, just because it isn't something that happens doesn't mean it can't happen.

 

I also put aside the talk about the talk about the coach as well. I strongly believe that any coach needs a good roster to be successful. I would hardly call the roster of the Jags of the past few seasons strong. This year will be proving grounds for Bradley and his staff. If he cannot make a successful run with this group, then I will readily agree that he is not the man. However, I believe he is a separate and independent entity than Caldwell and the two should not be tied at the hip when it comes to evaluating the success of the job that either has done.

 

So, all that been said, I really think it's in the best interest of the Jaguar organization to lock up Caldwell to an extension.

 

PS: while they're at it, do the same thing with Hurns. The kid has earned it.

There's no salary cap on front office positions.  Any team can certainly come in and try to outbid Khan for Caldwell, but I seriously doubt it would amount to anything as Khan isn't going to let the guy who manages the football vision for the franchise walk if things really turn around this year.  If they don't, then it's probably a good thing we didn't jump the gun on an extension. 

 

IMO, Caldwell isn't going anywhere.

It's the beginning of Year 4 of a 5 year contract... so... there's not really any rush.

 

That said... I'm all for an extension.  Dave's done his job well.  The talent level on the roster is infinitely better than when he arrived, and he's done so in a way that has left us with immense amount of Cap Space to give us flexibility in both Free Agency this year, as well as leaving plenty of cash to sign our star players to new deals.

 

No GM is 100% on picking players, but he's been right more than wrong, and our roster shows it.
