Around the NFL has Blake #2

#21

I'd say it's nice that they have some respect for Bortles, but the fact that they compare mariota to Joe Montana and ranked him #1 really makes the rest of the list pointless. The dumbest part was during the lovefest when they noted he can't throw the ball down the field at all they started talking about how short all of his receivers are, then noting he had Dorial Green Beckham in the same breath, a 6'6" high draft pick.

The rankings should be like this:

Bortles

Carr

Winston

Mariota/Bridgewater

Quote:I know Carr has played well enough so far to be on this list, but I have a feeling his peak is going to be mediocre and that the Raiders may find themselves in QB purgatory. I don't really have a feeling one way or the other on Mariota. I think it will largely depend on whether he can stay healthy or not. Bortles has the greatest potential of the bunch, but he's gotta clean up the sometimes horrendously timed mistakes. This year will tell a lot at least for Bortles and Carr as they're going into their third years.

But Carr is already better than mediocre. I think he has star potential.

Quote:QB's under 25 to build around. They have Blake as #2. They have Mariota as #1, which I don't agree with.

Most lists they had were:

1. Mariota

2. Bortles

3. Winston/Carr

4. Winston/Carr

5. Teddy/Goff/Wentz

Can't link the podcast from my phone, sorry.

I'll say...

1. Carr

2. Bortles

3. Winston

4. Mariota

5. Teddy

As for Goff and Wentz, I have no idea as of yet.

Interesting list.  Here's how I have it.  I now people tend to fall back to stats when assessing Carr and ignore stats when assessing Bortles, but I think we should ignore stats when assessing Mariota.  Honestly that guy is going to be a lot better than we think in a couple of  years.

1. Bortles

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">2. Mariota

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">7. Bridgewater

<p style="color:rgb(40,40,40);font-family:helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">19. Winston

Carr, Bortles and Winston all are showing promise.

Mariota has shown some, if a bit less,  and Teddy has his moments but leaves one doubting his sustainability longterm.

I think it could shake out a number of different ways as the years roll on, but I'd not trade Bortles for any of 'em.  His upside/potential is just ridiculous.

Not to speak for Jags02 but ranking mariota behind those others is no knock on him.

Personally, I had him ranked 4th as well but I think he is going to be an excellent QB.

In either order,

1a Carr

1b Bortles

Any other QB under 25 has not shown enough for me to 'want' to pick them to build a high powered offense with.

Mariota was a rookie and he is in his second year. While Blake is in his third year.

I listened to some of it. It was more than one guy doing the rankings though. Mariota was first on that list. Then you had Carr first on another and Winston on the other one. Bortles was consistently ranked as either the 2nd best or 3rd best though. They all kept throwing the word turnovers around when they brought him up. Which again, more than fair. Despite his lofty passing yardage and his touchdown passes he did make some critical mistakes. Which is fine for a 2nd year QB starting his 1st year in a new system. In all honesty, I'd rather have a QB with a big arm whose not afraid to take some chances and make mistakes with the football. We just need to keep building around him. Need a running game. Need a defense. I don't care if he goes onto be the next Brett Favre here for the next fifteen years. I can live with that as a fan as long as we're winning football games and we're getting into the play-offs on a more regular basis. Because if he wins us just ONE superbowl. He's great.

If 32 tds and just under 4k in yards with less sacks and INTs (especially pick 6s) is mediocore id gladly take it. Oakland also had a weak run game too and their o-line is far from star status as well.

Carr and Bortles

Winston

Mariota

Teddy. - I admit i was wrong about him so far but he does lack the weapons the other guys on the list have.

I liked him when he played for the Ducks, but watching him with the Titans gave me an entirely new perspective. Simply put, he's a system qb not quite cut out for this league. Maybe if the Titans acquired Chip Kelly he could do well in his quick release scheme since it doesn't really ask the qb to improvise. For this very reason I actually think Gabbert will do ok under Kelly, but Mariota is in for a wake-up call. I'll readily admit he has a very quick release which will help him to mitigate the challenges ahead of him, but overall his dink-and-dunk game will only get him so far.

About the Pick-6 thing:

Blake threw 4 last year. One of which was against Buffalo where a penalty should have negated it anyway.

Carr threw 3.

Luck throws 3 on an average season.

Big Ben throws about 2 a year.

So you take away the one that should have been called back, and he threw 3. Which is about average with the young "top tier" qbs in the league.

That's supposed to be tongue in cheek from a Gator fan, I actually think Winston is a lot better than that.  But in all seriousness, I'd still rank Bortles, Carr, and Mariota higher than him.  Bortles and Carr should need no explanation but I think people are missing a little on Mariota, they forget Bortles had a pretty bad year his first year too.
