Offseason Roster Moves 2016

#21

It'll be interesting who they keep at TE.  You know Julius and Marcedes are the top two, and that they'll keep one or two more behind them. It's hard to say if they keep the fourth TE, especially if they keep six WRs and three QBs. For the final spot or two, the contenders are...

  • Nic Jacobs - 6-5, 295

  • Ben Koyack - 6-5, 255

  • Neal Sterling - 6-3, 240

  • Braeden Bowman - 6-4, 240

I like Nic for the 3rd spot as he's developed into a fine blocker and is a force with the ball in his hands. I also feel like he can take over for Alualu as the FB. Jacobs is a big guy who can fill in on the OL in a clinch, but you just don't get much of a chance to see him catching passes on game day. Koyack, Sterling and Bowman would seem to be more in the mix as a fourth receiving TE as I don't see any of them truly competing with Jacobs as a blocker. Olsen had some nice words to say about Bowman including that he hasn't dropped a pass yet, and he said he likes Sterling's versatility that if they keep him at TE he could also play WR in a clinch. Still, I'm guessing Koyack has a slight edge over the two smaller TEs.

Bowman is a good PS candidate.

I think Sterling and Koyack are the guys to watch for the last active TE spot.

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of Jacobs. He's a decent blocker and will make a catch here and there but that's about it. You can find those guys off the free agent scrap heap. Sterling and Koyack offer way more upside and potential.

I just finished listening to Gus' long interview from the end of the minicamp, and he mentioned Bowman as a guy they think can be a dual TE and FB. I had Jacobs pegged for that role, so it's interesting that they are actually looking at the TE position to take over for Alualu.
