that was me.  I'm not a big fan of Erodgan and was hoping the military would restore the secular state of turkey instead of it becoming more islamic based.  That country has slowly been converting from a democracy to a dictatorship and the coup failing last night will only push it that way faster.

 

Iran was a secular westernized country, in 1979 it became an Islamic theocracy. Now the same is happening in Turkey. The two largest secular Islamic countries in the Middle East have fallen into religious fanaticism. Iraq and Libya (both thanks to the US) have become a lot more theocratic. The trend is in one direction with no end in sight. Along with that is more and more frequent attacks in Western Europe and the US by Islamic fundamentalists.


Whether we want to accept it or not, we're in a long-term religious war. Denial is not going to help.


On the plus side, massive nuclear war wiping out all of humanity is much less likely than it was before 1990.

It's our societal inability to see that the basis of their lives and culture is incompatible with ours. We either defeat it or surrender to it, but they won't let us peacefully coexist with it. We know what path the Left chooses by who they blame for it.

The "society" that you're defending believes that the whole world is under their sovereignty, and they have been trying to make that a reality for 1,300 years now.  Our existence usurps their sovereignty, but as I said, people in the West haven't the same basis for their worldview and so they dismiss or "reject" it. Do you realize that a person I the middle east that fears western occupation could cut your words and paste them into their blog to have a valid critique of our society from their prospective...


That, to me, shows that both sides are demonizing the other. The truth lies in between.


Like I said, the people want peace. The rulers, on both sides, want power. And we're being duped to look at the entire region as the enemy in order to make the war look legitimate.
