Quote:that was me.  I'm not a big fan of Erodgan and was hoping the military would restore the secular state of turkey instead of it becoming more islamic based.  That country has slowly been converting from a democracy to a dictatorship and the coup failing last night will only push it that way faster.

Iran was a secular westernized country, in 1979 it became an Islamic theocracy. Now the same is happening in Turkey. The two largest secular Islamic countries in the Middle East have fallen into religious fanaticism. Iraq and Libya (both thanks to the US) have become a lot more theocratic. The trend is in one direction with no end in sight. Along with that is more and more frequent attacks in Western Europe and the US by Islamic fundamentalists.

Whether we want to accept it or not, we're in a long-term religious war. Denial is not going to help.

On the plus side, massive nuclear war wiping out all of humanity is much less likely than it was before 1990.

The crusades never ended.  Massive nuclear war seems plausible in my lifetime.

Mostly because the shah was a massively unpopular dictatorial jerk who was installed as a puppet for and by the Brits and Americans to protect their oil interests. Most of what is still happening in the region today is because of Western intervention in the Middle East after WW2.

To simple minded folks its religion.

To others, it's all about making money.

Money, oil, and imperialism resulted in nations that were being exploited to push back.

The theocracy can be seen as a way certain factions were able to consolidate and maintain power, but this isn't a "war" of religion. They never are. It's always about either gaining power, or maintaining the power.

Impressively failed. The failure of western society at large to articulate the mandates of shariah law and how that correlates to wahabiism and salafism could prove to be one of the biggest mistakes in the history of mankind.

It's our societal inability to see that the basis of their lives and culture is incompatible with ours. We either defeat it or surrender to it, but they won't let us peacefully coexist with it. We know what path the Left chooses by who they blame for it.

I'm sure the protestants and the Catholics thought the same thing for millennia...

It's hard to have peace when one group feels their sovereignty is being usurped by an occupying foreign entity...

To say that their society is incompatible to ours is "final solution" talk, and I reject it.

That type of speech smacks of ignorance. Most middle eastern citizens just want to live their lives in peace. To think there is no solution but kill or be killed is ridiculous, and quite frankly, beneath you, flsprt.

Did you expect anything sensible from the leader of the rogue squadron?

That's not what were advocating. General Al sisi in Egypt has been at the forefront of calling for real doctrinal reforms within Islam. We should be supporting the anti-jihad wing of the faith and not ubderwritting the Muslim brotherhood (terrorist organization).

You can reject all you want. The question you should ask yourself is "why did the Jude Christian faiths evolve into western society while Islamic nations are stuck in a 7th century ideology." people are being killed and attacked in large numbers on an almost weekly basis. To turn a blind eye to the root causes and basic cultural differences is suicidal.

Well yeah! Luke Skywalker was the founder of rogue squadron.

Flsprt has a lot to live up to... That's a lot of pressure.

Catholic v Protestant was vicious and bloody. It was also short lived, fairly recent, and mostly over by the time this country came into being. The "society" that you're defending believes that the whole world is under their sovereignty, and they have been trying to make that a reality for 1,300 years now.  Our existence usurps their sovereignty, but as I said, people in the West haven't the same basis for their worldview and so they dismiss or "reject" it. Well, reject it all you want while you are safe, but will you still reject it when the knife is at your own throat? I just hope, for your sake, that it's not too late.

I'm not versed enough in the protestant v Catholic thing, so I'll leave that alone, except to say that I thought their conflict has been going on for a couple centuries...

But to your critique of "them"...

Do you realize that a person I the middle east that fears western occupation could cut your words and paste them into their blog to have a valid critique of our society from their prospective...

That, to me, shows that both sides are demonizing the other. The truth lies in between.

Like I said, the people want peace. The rulers, on both sides, want power. And we're being duped to look at the entire region as the enemy in order to make the war look legitimate.
