Why is Jason Myers still here? How inept is this franchise?

Quote:Once he got on Coughlin's naughty list he didn't have a say in whether he could stay or not. That decision was already made for him.

Gotcha. I was living in Germany when all of this went down. I came back and no Hollis, no Coughlin. What happened between them? And why did Coughlin go? I remember the players complained about him a lot.

He's a 1st year kicker. If he's still missing extra points next year, after a full year of experience, then they should get rid of him... he's hitting his FG's right now though.. if the defense would play better, 1 point shouldn't matter as much as it does.

At least we get the ball over the 50 now to give Myers a chance.

Hollis' weak leg started getting even weaker on kickoffs. They simply had to replace him eventually. Quite frankly, if I had to pick between Hollis in his prme and Myers right now to nail a 55-yard game winner, I'd pick Myers.

Coughlin ultimately had to go because he lost his ability to draft players while overspending on free agents left them cap strapped. Early on he could pick them, but toward the end he had drafts worse than Gene Smith's. The Jaguars still had a talented team in 2000, but after that 7-9 season they began dumping expensive players to get under the cap. Coughlin finished 6-10 in 2001 and 2002, and with the team's fan base so spoiled with the Jaguars winning throughout the late nineties, the fans simply couldn't accept that. One fan even spit on Coughlin as he left the stadium for the last time.

Thanks! I never really understood what the heck happened.

I thought this would be a fun thread to "bump" for discussion.

I was optimistic that Myers would be on the team and dragging us down at this point in 2016.

Just to put things in perspective. McManus with the Broncos was traded for then cut because he sucked his rookie reason. Was swapped for Connor Barth. After he cleared waivers he was resigned, won the starting job and has been automatic.

It's not easy being a new placekicker in the NFL. He deserves another shot. A leg that strong is not easy to find.

After the Jags score they should just take a couple of delay of games and move back a bit. That should fix Myer's XP problems.

He should have a short leash this year. No matter how good he was at field goals (and he was actually pretty good), his missed PAT's are unacceptable.

Myers was terrible on Field Goals, PATs, and kickoffs.  He struggled in every facet of the kicking discipline.

It is unfathomable that he's still on our roster today.

They way you people talk about Myers, you make it sound like he missed 50% of his field goals and was Charlie Browning the kickoffs. Outside of his XP issues he was fine as a kicker.

I agree he was terrible at PATs but he was money on FGs with the exception of the 1st Indy game.

26/30, including 2 game winners isn't too shabby. That 58 yarder vs miami was an absolute bomb and we ended up needing those 3 points to win.

55 touch backs on 84 kickoffs doesn't sound too bad. I don't know at what rate the elite kickers get touchbacks, but 66% doesn't seem horrible to me.

We may actually have something with Myers. And if he keeps missing PATs, then we get rid of him. No big deal.

Jaguars were 8th in touchbacks.

I concur with your sentiment.

Myers missed XPs hurt, any missed kick hurts... but like with Bortles' INTs, it was about timing of those misses that really hurt.

Myers was ranked darned near in the middle of the league at 87% on FGS and once again the middle on kick offs. With a long of 58 he was a solid 75% on FGS of 50+ yrds. Granted, he was sketchy as hell on XPs, but those are issues that can be worked.
