I am surprised this topic has never been started on this board. After a doctor visit today, it appears that I may be one of the first Floridians to be prescribed medical Marijuana. I had a long talk with my doctor about it, and he feels strongly that I should. For those who don't know, for the past 2 years or so, I have been fighting stage 4 Kidney Cancer. I still undergo chemo routinely, and have a litany of side effects from it. I am in pretty constant pain, and am pretty medicated most of the time. The doctor feels strongly that this will replace many of my medications I currently take.


So, What do you know about it? Here's what I know. It's not what you think. It comes in the form of an oil or inhaler, and has been processed to take out the THC which is what gives you the typical weed buzz. Everything else left is apparently very helpful to people like me. I haven't started it, but think I will at some point, depending upon the cost.


If anyone has anything intelligent to add, feel free. This is not a "legalize pot" thread. That can go somewhere else. This is more about the medical side, and what people know and don't know.

As far as medical marijuana. Their are soo many studies that shows the benefit of using it.. I would just do my research and find the best for you and your situation..

Sanjay Gupta has done some CNN specials about medical cannabis, one in particular in which he talks about a legal California grower who developed the high-CBD, low-THC Charlotte's Web strain used to make the concentrated oil that is changing so many minds about the medical properties of cannabis. This particular grower developed the strain then discovered they had pounds of the stuff nobody wanted because it doesn't get you high. Then they heard about how the oil is used to help children suffering frequent seizures and now supply it where needed, sometimes at no charge.

That's exactly the strain I was referring to, Charlotts Web, I believe the childs name was Charlotte? She suffered mightily and the parents tried everything to no avail.

Hos is high THC marijuana different than low THC Marijuana? At least in a political sense? I can tell you this: In florida, The only high THC marijuana can be prescribed is to terminal patients.

What I meant applies to the Florida law: high-THC marijuana is a tough sell to voters who don't want it legalized, partly because of the potential for abuse by people in search of a high, instead of medical relief. High-CBD, low-THC concentrates are more acceptable because they don't get you high, and the medical benefits, especially for children, are proven. Clearly, that becomes a political discussion. My apologies if mentioning it the way I did was introducing political content, that was not my intent.

 

I said it's a shame because my experience with high-THC cannabis tells me it is very effective in relieving my particular symptoms as compared to lower THC strains. Admittedly, the inferior strains may be lower in CBDs, too. Also, in my case, and some studies corroborate, I've built up a tolerance to the psychoactive effects (the "high")  of THC without developing a need for higher levels to manage my symptoms. There is also evidence of a symbiotic effect between THC and CBDs, in which each enhances the other's benefit, as well as CBDs reducing the psychoactive effect of THC.

Back on topic, since you (thankfully) don't qualify for high-THC cannabis, I assume acquiring it from the black market is not something with which you feel comfortable. If so, I don't see what you'd have to lose trying what you can get. If your doctor writes a script, does he then discontinue the other pain meds?

I would assume so, but it would be a process. As to part 1 of your question, I would not risk doing something illegal so that option is out for me. I like to consider me an upstanding, lawful citizen. I don't look down on those who do, but it's just not for me. kind of like hunting in that way. I have a frend that has epilepsy and has tried everything, the only thing left is brain surgery and they can't guarantee that it will work. Her doctor has suggested that she look into MM.

I think I would rather have some relief of the continual pain and not concern myself with losing a CCW permit. I can still protect myself without a CCW.

 

I don't have any knowledge of medical marijuana but I sure hope that if I ever need it, it is legal.
