Who is our QB next year?

Quote:I don't think it should be Henne.  I would offer Henne another similar deal to what he has now - backup money, and maybe have him start for the first few weeks until our rookie QB is ready.  And if our rookie just flatout beats him in camp - then by all means start the rookie.  I fully expect the rookie to be ready and good enough.

Henne is being paid WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much right now.

If he wanted to come back at the veteran minimum with no guaranteed money I could see keeping him. As it is he's just not worth 3+ million a year.

This here mock draft has us taking Carr with 5th overall. After the Vikings take Teddy at 4, and 2 more QBs at 6 & 7.

No mention of Berger or McCarron.

With Barr already taken by ATL at 3, in this scenario I'd rather take Mack and wait til round 2 and grab Berger, McCarron, or Boyd

where as this mini mock has us getting Barr after Houston grabs Teddy and Minny gets Carr.

I like this scenario even better, we get Barr and wait til Rd 2 or trade back into the first if there is a run on QBs

Browns would be commiting suicide to take Bortles in the first. Id be fine with this mock though and im startingto think htis is how it will actually go.

Edit: On a side note how insane would it be if we took Carr and he actually turned out to be some franchise oh my goodness did you see that throw type top 5 QB after the texans died a little on the inside for years with David Carr?

No to Bortles for me. I see him as an ok backup for a team. He just doesn't have that "it" factor.

I really wish we could somehow get Teddy. If he falls a few spots I'm hoping we could trade up and grab him... Even though I don't like the idea of trading up.

I don't think Teddy will be available to us, which brings us to Derek Carr. I love his arm and passion for the game. It's something you can definitely build on. He needs some work for sure, but for some reason I feel he is a good QB for Gus to coach. We definitely really need to evaluate this guy as much as possible.

I'm going to be nervous drafting another spread option QB, but I didn't know Carr ran a pro-style offense last season. Maybe his transition to the NFL will go a little smoother? Regardless, we need to sign a veteran QB to compete with Henne for the veteran QB presence, if we keep Henne, that is.

Utah State constantly pressured Carr, causing him to throw without setting his feet. He reminded me of Gabbert. Wish we could grab Greg Olson again to make sure our upcoming rookie QB doesn't fail.

I actually think every QB in this draft has some "needs some work". I really don't think Teddy is the slam dunk they hype machine has him at.

Every QB in this draft has good skills or physical attributes to be a good to great NFL QB one day.

But every QB has some questions in my mind.

Teddy - played in the AAC, only a junior, cold weather games doesn't play as well (so Ive heard) and recently since they hype machine has been going strong, I've watched games where he didn't really look "great" i.e. the Cincinnati game most recently.

Bortles - also the AAC, has some pocket awareness issues, but outplayed much of the same competition Teddy did, even the SEC matchup. Somehow though, this kid was less than an after thought until the last couple weeks it seems

Manziel - very young, maturity questions, lacks "typical" size

Carr - plays out of shotgun, weak conference competition, didn't show up big in the big games even though his overall stats are pretty darned good

Berger - recently injured, had all star WRs that some have claimed covered up for his actual mediocre-ness

McCarron - "game manager" (not my tag)

Murray - another recent ACL injury, played well when the stars surrounded him, but when leaned on the team didn't do much.

Boyd - Not the biggest QB, didn't play up to some of the better competition, lots of screens and short passes in the system (system QB?), locks on to 1st target

Not all of these are my criticisms though I do share a few with these guys. To me, its about value in this draft, since there are so many QBs that will surely be left in the 2nd, we could get a guy in the 2nd (maybe 3rd) that ends up better than one of the first rounders that have been shot up by the hype machine.

I trust our GM will get the job done.

That is my biggest worry with him not setting his feet. One thing to note though is he doesnt run from "phantom" pressure it takes actual pressure from a free DE/DT/OLB in his face for him to fall back and even then he will throw the ball and take the hit vs scrambling and taking a sack. In this Carr reminds me more of Eli Manning in his first few NFL seasons. Not scared just trying to avoid the hit AND make the big throw which is worlds different than gabbert just doing everything to avoid the hit at the expense of any throw.

Gabbert would break and scramble the moment a DE started a swin move much less actually broke free.  Carr will only do that in last resort and will slide in the pocket to find someone. He throws off his back foot more to keep his arm motion the same and avoid his arms getting hit mid throw than to avoid the actual hit to his body Very coachable trait IMO ala Eli Manning.

Carr will play USC in a bowl game so it will definitely be interesting to see him against some better competition. I know USC isn't what it used to be but it will definitely be the best team he's played against.

If he turns out like Eli, I'd be fine with that. I do like the potential he has over when Gabbert was coming out. Although he doesn't play high-calibre teams, he is at least productive and pretty dominant. What might make Bridgewater fall is for the same reason, although Bridgewater plays in a more pro-style offense. I think Carr has better intangibles just based off what I've read and seen. Ultimately, I believe Caldwell will make the right call.

I live in Fresno and would be excited and absolutely terrified if we take Carr. The prospect of a home town guy going to my Jags and becoming a franchise guy is just to good to be true. Although if it happened it would be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Before I get on the bortles or manziel bandwagons I'm going have to see more pics of the gf's.

I don't care as long as Chad Henne will not be our starter anymore, i prefer a shiny new rookie instead of a veteran to grow with our young core group.

When in doubt pick the QB with the hottest girlfriend?

When you get into the endzone, act like you've been there before.

No, I just want to see the pics and have it be on your history not mine. Smile

Any high draft rookie is going to be a designated "hittee" by opponents defenses.....you sure you want to get the guy whacked like that?

Among other things its probably what ruined gabber beyond all repair.

Because Jaguars is our mantra  Wallbash

Gabbert

If you watch carr's games this year you'll see the pattern that any pressure messes with him and imo just looks like gabbert. Plus he gets a lot of help from #15 when he throws it up a fourth of the time when he's in trouble. He won't have that big possession receiver here like he does now.  At least bortles played well against the defenses that were ranked best in the conference. Better than Bridgewater did against in his games.

2. David Yankey OG Stanford

3. David Fales QB SJSU
You're robbing us of a 1st rd pick. It should be Barr, Seferian, Yankey, Fales
