Blacks and other minorities in this country are oppressed?  Really?  Nobody told me that, and I happen to be a minority.  Some people need to get over past HISTORY and recognize today's world.

 

Just a reflection on this. I am by no means a scholar on black race relations. I have never even read Invisible Man or Black Like Me. I do recall a conversation a long time ago that I had with one of my neighbors. We were discussing this one time I went into one of the best restaurants in town and sat at the bar. I was wearing a pair of distressed jeans (clean, but torn), a t-shirt, and some jogging shoes without socks. I ran up a tab of over a hundred bucks as I sat their eating, drinking and reading. I paid and left. She asked if I would have gotten the same (lack of) reaction and lack of 'looks' if I had been black. While I can't say that I would have gotten a different reaction, I thought it was an interesting question. If I had to guess, I would say there would be a greater probability that I would have gotten those 'looks' if I were black rather than white. 


 

One other thing, this time regarding 'Black Lives Matter'. I have always thought of the name as part of a sentence. It could be either :


 

Black lives matter ... as much as lives of another color   
or   Black lives matter ... more than other lives. 

 

I have always interpreted the intended meaning as the former, but it seems there are some who feel the intent is the latter.

Regarding your first question, I'm of the belief that any citizen of this country that refuses to honor the very country that they live in given the freedom and opportunity is an idiot.  Someone that speaks out against our country is a coward, especially when they have done nothing to support or defend it.  I could go on-and-on regarding what I think of Colin Kaepernick and people like him, but that's a whole other thing.

 

Regarding your story, I do believe that times are changing.  I don't think that there are many members of this board or forum that are old enough to remember when segregation was real.  Is there still racism around?  Certainly.  Do people of another color or another race get certain "looks" from others at times?  Certainly.  I've actually had it happen to me personally.  My point is, that behavior is fading away.

 

Regarding what your final comment was about.  Show me where anyone from BLM or any movement made any comment that suggests the former of your interpretation.  Quite frankly it leans more towards the latter.

 

I personally agree with the former comment, but when anyone says that ALL LIVES MATTER it now becomes an issue of "hate speech".  The DNC even has plans for that.  It's not about trying to solve a problem, it's about how to pander for votes.

I see/hear examples almost every day.  It's not so much discrimination (refusing service to somebody because of race), but just outright racism where black people are called the "N" word behind their back by white people.  It happens, but mostly with the older people that I work with.  I personally see it looked down upon by most at my workplace and that's why I say that it's going away.

 

However, if you want a specific example one happened to my parents recently.  I'm bilingual as are my parents.  All of us were born and raised here in the U.S..  It's common for us to speak in Spanish or what I call "Spanglish" where sentences might start in one language and end in another.  A woman had the gall to tell my mother and father in a restaurant recently that they needed to speak English when they were having a private conversation that was none of this woman's business anyway.  My parents basically told this woman to go fornicate herself (which I was proud of) because we aren't mandated to speak a certain language in a social situation.  If my parents or I need to conduct official government business and/or commerce we speak perfectly clear English.

 

Maybe I need to start a HLM movement because Hispanic Lives Matter.

When you make a post like this, it's going to be ripped to shreds. It becomes part of the argument. Meanwhile, there will be posts about "it's a two way street, but black ppl" where the other side of the street never gets addressed. And the ones who are looking for a flaw in your argument won't dare bring that to light. It is better that we tone down our rhetoric so we can see who is truly open-minded.
