Dante Fowler Jr. & Malik Jackson

#81

If pass rush is the problem do the Jags consider Greg Hardy and all the baggage?

*Dante is going to be fine.  he just needs to learn the DE position.  He lives across the 17th fairway from me.  He's a really nice kid.

Malik blew that play up, too bad we don't have any edge rushers to finish it.

It looks like rushing to "contain" Rodgers right away but decides to spin off the contain rush.

Yes he was. But he was setting the edge expecting run.

I'm not gonna start saying they are using him wrong but, he didn't even try to rush the passer. He was in a low 3 point stance, expecting run.

The expecations on Fowler Jr. need to be reeled back tremendously by the fanbase. He didn't play defensive end at Florida and he missed an entire year of football. He was a roamer for the Gators and was moved around a lot. He rarely had to set the edge and play with his hands in the dirt. As far as Malik Jackson. I don't know. It's one game. People forget that we were out there with a new secondary and we still managed to hold an MVP caliber QB, possibly the best QB in the NFL to just 199 yards through the air. And this is in a game where the officiating was CLEARLY not on anyone's side but Green Bay's. So I am not going to sit here and nit pick these two defenders. I think they held up just fine in an opener. Green Bay has already been pegged and dubbed to be the NFC representative in the Superbowl. We should have had some calls made in the first half that the refeeres refused to acknowledge and ultimately in my eyes that was the difference in that game.

Senderick Marks looks terrible on that play. Maybe years and that knee injury, time to put him way back on the depth chart.

I agree. Marks was like...screw it, I can't beat a double team. Just gonna jog one out.

They have been by now. That post needed to be made after the first week of training camp when the "Dante Fowler isn't human" threads were all the rage.

While Malik had a few good plays where he forced pressure on Rodgers I took a peek at the 4th quarter play by play and some could say he done his fair part of costing us the game.

The 3rd and 3 play from the 32 where Cobb drew a face mask penalty on Poz, Mailk committed a stupid "look at me" penalty on the sideline which resulted in offsetting penalties. Had he kept his 90 million dollar composure, that would have made it 3rd and 18 from the 17 which would have been much harder to convert. On the next play GB converted their 3rd and short which kept the drive alive. Later on the same drive he commits a neutral zone infraction penalty on 3rd and 8 which once again GB coverts on the next play allowing the drive to continue. GB inevitably scores a FG on that drive.

Had he not committed these penalties there's a good chance that were only down by 1 instead of 4 which then a FG wins the game.

More than being a presence up front, he needs to keep his head in the game and not hurt his team when it matters the most. You have to expect that out of the highest paid player on the DL.

Great point! Seriously forgot all about that blunder and bone head play. Yeah, you could say he had his hand in costing us a win too.

How about Tashaun Gipson blowing coverage on Cobb. The play where Cobb tripped up but was wide open. How about when Lacy shook Gipson down in open field and gained like 20 plus yards to keep a drive alive.

Gipson had 3 tackles, 0 pd, 0 int,

I can't find PFF grades but I bet he was the lowest.

While those plays were bad, the penalties are what stand out the most for me. When you're playing one of the best teams in the league, you just can't give them easy yards you must make them earn them. Gibson may have had mental lapses and lapses in technique, but at least the effort was there. (Man did I really sound like Gus Bradley in that last sentence?)

By you reminding me about the Jackson "look at me" moment, it just shows that we had other ways we could have won. Then he jumps offsides and hands them 3 points.

So yeah, we could have kicked a FG for the win with 14 seconds left instead of a WR bubble screen.

We have two rookies playing LEO. DE usually struggle in their rookie year. I wouldn't mind signing Greg Hardy to a deal for this season so we can bring Fowler along as well as Yannick. Secondary played pretty well so with a better pass rush this defense can be a top 10 defense at the end of the season.

To be honest, we need to revisit this after 4 games. Fowler is playing out of control with the spins and not be able to beat double teams.

On one play he stood up to set the edge instead of pinning his ears back. By design? Who knows.

But sign Greg Hardy after week 1 vs a Super Bowl team. Meh...

Hardy ain't going nowhere, so he will be there if we call.

As has been mentioned in numerous outlets  - the Jags took a different approach to the pass rush vs the packers and it does make sense considering the number of big plays Rodgers makes when he's improvising.
