Sunday is a "Must Lose" game

#81

We're a 5-11 football team. We signed some FA's and got two special rookies, but our defense still sucks. The offense looks like it has regressed dramatically, so I have no idea what went wrong.

Quote:When is it ever in the best interests of a professional sports franchise to lose?
Here's 1 example:

Let's say that team is playing their hated rival in the last game of the season. If your rival, let's say Indy or Tennessee, gets to draft a once in a generation quarterback if they lose to you and your team is 4-11 and going nowhere. In this instance, it is in the best long-term interests of that team to lose. That doesn't mean a fan should root against their team as the game is being played, however they should be happy that their rival won't likely be beating up on them for the next 10 years. Nobody remembers these meaningless games anyway. To say a win gives a 5-11 team momentum going into the next season is hogwash.

Hypothetically let's say your team is 0-15 going in to the last week.

The team you are playing, a division rival, sits all their starters because they already maximized their playoff seed.

Your team comes out a house of fire and beats those grocery baggers by two points, 12 to 10, to end the season 1-15.

The next day the GM comes out and says, "Based on the tremendous success we experienced yesterday it's clear that Coach Bobblehead's system has finally taken hold. AS such, we've offered him a five year extension and we look forward to great success next season."

Quote:8-8 he gets fired.
Gus will not get fired if the team goes 8-8. Caldwell will say the team went 8-6 after 2 opening losses and the team is on the right track. The only way he'll fire his friend as well as admit he made the wrong hire would be if Khan demands it or the team wins only 6 games or less. If they go 7-9, it's a toss-up depending on how they play the last half of the season. Looking at their schedule, they should lose to Houston twice, Oakland, at K.C., at Detroit, at Chicago,  Denver and Minnesota. That means the best case scenerio is  6-10 in which case I do expect him to be gone. I do expect them to win this week at home against a Ravens team that barely beat Cleveland and to save the job of their coach.

A locker room full of losers. You can tell they don't even know how to celebrate - they just look at each other in an awkward way before Cyp steals the show with Gus and dances like a rooster.

However, you can tell Telvin is a competitor.

How, you ask? He's doing jumping jacks.

Lol I always notice Cyp awkwardly trying to get close to dance with Uncle Gussy. What a kiss [BLEEP]. Kind of explains alot, because he sure hasn't earned playing time with his play during games. Gus and Cyp are ice cream BFFs for life!!!

There were a few on here who stated prior to the season their belief that it would take some time for all the new pieces on defense to gel.  It looks like that may be the case.  With the exception of the second half of the Green Bay game, the defense has played poorly.  That and you don't win many games when your QB throws pick 6's like Blake has frequently done in years past or turns the ball over deep in our own territory which he has done 3 times this year in 2 games (2 INTs, 1 Fumble).  Spotting the other team points is a recipe for a loss.

The defense clearly isn't where it needs to be yet to be able to bail Bortles out, but it may still be able to get there as the season moves along.  Bortles clearly needs to be better and clean up the horrendous plays that lead to points for the other team.  Some of us have been calling for him to clean that up, but unfortunately it's still part of his game this season so far. Not all interceptions/turnovers are equal.  Turning the ball over in an opponents field goal range is essentially spotting them points and is significantly damaging to your chances of winning.

Game Planning needs to be better as well as evidenced by this past game where they allowed San Diego to continually create mismatches against Poz.  That's the type of game that could get a coach fired mid-season.  Lucky for Gus it happened week 2 and I don't think firing a coach after week 2 is going to accomplish anything.  Chalk it up as a mulligan and move on to the Ravens game.  If it happens again, Gus is probably gone mid-season with Marrone or someone else on the staff getting an extended interview over the remaining games.

Turning the ball over deep in your own territory (multiple times) combined with a shaky young defense and a poor coaching effort even by this staff's standards and the result against the Chargers isn't all that surprising though no less frustrating.  No need to root for a loss.  As always this will take care of itself.  This past Sunday might have been Bradley's last mulligan, but he's certainly not getting a mulligan on the season as a whole.  Everyone in that building is expecting a quality product and a winning culture to start asserting itself and showing up in the win column.  If it doesn't he will be gone, I have no doubt about that.

Yes losing on purpose is a great way to turn around the culture of your franchise. Top 5 draft picks every year don't win games. Sucking and losing has no benefit in the NFL plain and simple. Until this team can find some balance and identity on both sides of the ball any drafted player will just be another name.

No pain, no gain.

Quote:Never. Only a fool would think this.

Playoff positioning (in all professional sports and even olympic events) frequently involves intentional losses.  An example of this is a team choosing to lose their last regular game of the season because it would switch their first round playoff opponent, resulting in a more favorable matchup.

Another, more rare scenario involves losing to lock another team out of the playoffs.  In other words, letting the Browns beat you at the end of the season, because then they get in the playoffs and the Steelers don't (based on record or tie-breakers).  Of course, your team would hopefully already be in the playoffs, unless you just hated the Steelers.

Quote:Today we are hearing from some Jaguar fans and media that this Sunday's game against the Ravens is a "must win" for the coach and team. Same thing we heard before yesterday's debacle against the Chargers. I take the opposite stand; this Sunday is a "must lose" game for the fans who want to see things turn around sooner rather than later. The Chargers' game clearly showed that Gus and his staff are in "way over their heads." The score could have been much worse and San Diego is a below average team. If the team somehow rallies around their coach and beats the Ravens, it will simply prolong the inevitable. It would allow Caldwell and Khan to justify keeping the staff at least until the end of the season. The dedicated fans deserve better than a coaching staff that made too many mistakes to be counted yesterday. EVERYBODY likes Gus and they should. He is almost impossible to not like, but that does not make him a capable NFL head coach. Even the biggest Jaguars apologist, Tony Boselli, just said that the team's body language was different when they fell behind yesterday. Shad Khan, a brilliant businessman, should have already fired Gus today and named Marrone interim head coach. I know, he's not Vince Lombardi or Bill Belichek, but he did have a winning season as head coach of a mediocre Buffalo team with Tyrod Taylor as quarterback. If he doesn't get the team on the right track this year, I really believe Caldwell can find a strong candidate who would love to come to a team with the talent that this team obviously have. So, since Dave and Shad did not do it today, another embarassing loss on Sunday might force their hand or nobody would show up for the remainder of home games. As a lifetime Jaguars season ticket holder, it pains me to say:

"Sunday is a "must lose" game.
I understand your idea but I think wishing for the Jags to lose to the ravens is unnecessary; they'll probably make your wish come true without promoting it.

there's that term again....

once in a generation...

I'm sick of it.... College pumps out kids every year. Left and right. QBs a dozen of em every year. Some pan out some don't. Some are selected 1st overall (Manning), some are 3rd round (Wilson), some 6th round (Brady).... some even Undrafted (Romo)

Luck isn't some once in a generation QB. He's just another guy who throws the ball really well.

The once-in-a-generation crap is stupid. Because there are almost always 2 QBs relatively close in age playing elite level football in the NFL.

A generation is every 30 years. 30!!!!

I don't think even Brady can be considered that. There are similar QBs to come out before him, just a few years, and after him by much less than 30.

And in another 10 years, there'll probably be someone better than Luck or Brady.

Hell, maybe Wentz.

If I knew for a fact that if we lost and our whole coaching staff left including the two coordinators the next day I would consider it. I just don't want them to lose because no matter what I want that hope.

Once I'm sure there can be no miracles that could get us to the playoffs... I will root for the other team to help our draft position and to expose players that don't need to be here next year.... but not until we're 100% out of playoff contention.

Mathematically, we are still in the hunt.

Realistically, we were eliminated the day they decided to bring dopey Gus back for another year.
