I was thinking of Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, and Greg Schiano. Pete Carroll was bad in the NFL on his first try.

Most NFL head coaches were assistants at that level first. They go from college HC to NFL assistant more often than not.

I kinda hate myself for even responding to you, so let me state that my post here is done in an effort to provide information to the masses and not actually directed at you. I just need to quote you in order to give a sense of direction for the post.

 

All that being said, College Head Coaches becoming NFL Assistants a majority of the time is patently false. As was stated above, Coughlin, Carroll and Johnson all came direct to an NFL Head Coaching position. In addition, Kelly (an aberration to be sure since he had zero NFL experience prior to being hired), Spurrier, Saban, Marrone, simply to name a few came direct from NCAA HC positions.

 

While there are examples of NCAA Headers leaving to become assistants, Brian Van Gorder immediately comes to mind, it's a rare thing.

Many people thought his time came last year. When LSU decided to retain him, his hot seat cooled off, but not as much as I thought.

 

I can't argue about talent without watching more than one  LSU game each year, but it seems to be Fournette and "everyone else."
