This isn't madden.  Name one team that runs a spread offense and is successful.

There have been plenty of teams that had success.  The 90's early 00's Rams team were unstoppable with it.  This team plays much better when they open it up instead of running into a road block every down.  Chip Kelly had a really good season with the eagles until he abused his gm duties.

That team also had Marshall Faulk in the backfield and I don't ever recall them having the worst run blocking line in the league.


The Greatest Show on Turf may have incorporated some spread concepts but they were more than capable of running the ball effectively as well.


I've said it before and I'll say it again, this team has to find a way to manufacture a respectable ground game. A wholesale abandonment of the run is simply not a recipe for winning football games long term unless you have a Tom Brady or Drew Brees under center...which we do not.

A good coach plays to our Strength. We do not have an offensive line that can open up running lanes. I rather them sling it all day and try to create points instead of being predictable and 3 and out every other drive.

slinging it all day is how you become one dimensional and make defenses job easy to shut us down

For whatever reason... inadequate talent on our o-line, the scheme...whatever, we don't have a threatening run game. We are 31st in the league at running the ball. Most of the time when we attempt 'power runs' up the middle they prove to be little more than a waste of a down.

 

Imho, a smart offensive coach (one who's actually interested in winning) will optimize his offense to take maximum advantage of the offenses strengths. Among other words, you lead with your strong suite, not your weak one. I see Olson trying to force his offensive football ideology on a set of players who are not cut in that design. The results are predictable; we are near rock bottom in running the ball and have to rely on last minute theatrics to defeat even a bad football team.

 

We have two excellent running backs, but once again, for whatever the reason, they get insufficient run blocking in order to realize much success on the ground. Since we can't do much about the personnel who are on our o-line at this point (or is it an issue with the blocking scheme?), I hope that Olie will come around and start being less predictable and allow the passing game to open up our run lanes a bit more instead of continuing to try to 'force a square peg into a round hole.'

I agree. I've said it from the end of last season. We need to go into a spread offense. We have the personnel for it. We are not a run 1st offense; and shouldn't play that way. However, I am a little weary of throwing more with the way Blake's accuracy is looking so far. Olson's playcalling has been horrendous thus far.

The play call might have an option past the first down marker, but if it's not there you throw the check down and let your punter flip field position.

This team lining it up and running 2 yards up the gut it just a waste.  This offense and Blake plays much better when we have 3 or more receivers on the field to open the game up.  So sick of seeing this conservative lets run for almost no gain on first down every play.  Shotguns, spread offense and let's open this thing up.

 

Everytime we are down and the team has to spread the field to catch up blake and this offense runs much better.  Time to stop playing this lame Greg Olsen offense and lets open up the field.

 

It's not "spread" that we need, it's no-huddle. That's what worked in the fourth quarter Sunday, and why Bortles' stats were way better in the fourth quarter last season.


 

The running plays would work better out of the no-huddle too. I agree that the way the Jags are running the ball now is basically just throwing away a down.

They had a HoF RB, 2 HoF WR's, a HoF LT, and a HoF QB. I could run whatever type of offense I wanted with that type of firepower.

I guess the coaching staff does make adjustments.

 

First game of the year, Bortles got to the line and was able to call stuff out and adjust.  Mediocre game but they did somethings.

 

Second game of the year, regression and not much worked.

 

Third game of the year, more regression and less uptempo.

 

Fourth game of the year, simplified game plan with forced running that somewhat panned out because the Colts have issues as well.

 

Bye week, work on emphasizing the run.

 

Fifth game of the year, same formations but a stronger commitment to the run.

 

Tuesday Jaguars comments, Run isn't working going to be a stronger emphasis to move the offensive line faster.

 

Sixth game???

 

 

I'm betting we will do more of the bang your head into the wall stuff and have much to be upset about again.

you dont see much of 3rd and 10+ thrown behind the line of scrimmage or right along the line of scrimmage by other teams, but the Jags do it frequently...Most team throw at least to the marker the majority of the time

What I'm telling you is the check down is the safe play. Other teams have different qbs with varying levels of experience and ability. With all of the game changing turnovers from last year, you don't think Blake is being coached check down and live to fight another drive? Do you think it's coincidence we've been every game where we kept the turnover number low?

I think that when the ball is snapped and Blake takes one or two steps back turns and throws behind the LOS or right along the line of scrimmage its a designed play...when Blake steps back, looks left to right BEFORE he throws behind the LOS it's checkdown...Everyone knows about checkdowns we have become the KING of checkdowns over the last decade, but I am seeing lots of no looking anywhere before turning and throwing along the LOS or behind it...THAT is a called play, and there are too many of those calls on 3rd and long

My mistake then, I have seen them call plays like that on 3rd and long, but not exclusively enough for it to bother me.

You are going to be very disappointed.  Monday Presser is pretty much a double down on pushing the run offense.
