What indication do we have that Caldwell is the sole reason?

 

From the quote above Dave presents it as his plan, thanking Khan for being on board with it.

... now imagine if they left and were replaced with even worse coaches. These two suck, but there's always someone worse.

 

The number of years the coach has left has never been shown to have any effect on who is willing to sign for any team.

 

The Jaguars have been losers for years, and under Gus in 2015 they showed nothing of his ability to raise a team's level of play. Everyone that signed in the offseason signed for money. Malik, Gipson, Ivory, all of them signed for money.

 

None of them care if Gus is here next year. None of them care if they're cut next year, they got paid. They'll get paid by another team if we release them.

 

The Gus extension was pure vanity.

 

It's not just the players. Coaches often stay where its safe. I'd bet there's always a coach with New England, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, etc. that gets offers from lesser teams, but they don't take it since their existing team is more stable. Would you go to Jacksonville of all places for a head coach with a losing record and one year left? I wouldn't risk a one-time bump in pay for the chance that they turn it around. If they were guaranteed that it'd be more than one year then they're probably more likely to make the move.

That's why I think they "chose" Wash to be defensive coordinator. No one decent would want to come into the situation the 2016 Jaguars were coming into.

 

It's the same reason why Dave will likely have to be fired with Gus, they'll not find a coach that wants to come in under a GM that is possibly a year from being fired.

 

Khan really screwed the pooch bringing Gus back for another year, they likely would have had much more interest in the HC job last offseason with the seeming success of the offense and a GM that seemed to be digging up talent at ever turn.

And he managed to convince the 'Stache it was the right move which basically tied his future to the gus bus.

 

Bottom line....Khan has to strongly think about letting his GM go too.
