Coaching Candidates

Oh so you know that for sure? Firing him will do nothing?

We already know what happens when he coaches. We have no clue what will happen with someone else.

nothing...gain nothing lose nothing so nothing changes...so no reason to get rid of him now...it serves no purpose, doesn't solve the problem, and doesn't change anything

History shows that firing a coach mid season and placing an interim coach in charge makes very little if any difference...There is always an exception or two, but there is far less times that an interim coach has made a noticeable change

The thing is you don't actually know that nothing changes.  Maybe you get rid of Gus, promote Marrone and he instills some discipline and you do see a change.  The problem with Gus is more of a culture issue than anything.  We need to cut that out ASAP.

You should really look at history and see how many times an interim coach made a difference as opposed to how many times they didn't...

I know.

How many coaches in history have been THIS bad?

not many but the fact still remains that very few interim coaches made a noticeable impact

Quote: The season ( 2012 ) Sean Payton was suspended, the Saints went 7-9. The season before with Payton, they went 13-3 and advanced to the 2nd Round of the playoffs. The season after with Payton, the Saints went 11-5 and advanced to the 2nd Round of the playoffs.

Thank you for summing up my sentiments nicely.

  My pleasure.

IMO,  there isn't an Assistant Coach on Sean Payton's staff in New Orleans who has demonstrated that he has remotely the value as a coach that Payton does.   Sean Payton did what many thought wouldn't happen in their lifetime,  in leading the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl Championship.   Not to mention his impact in saving the franchise as the first Saints HC hired after Hurricane Katrina.

I'd take Payton in a heartbeat. I also like the idea of McDaniels as long as he isn't in charge of making roster moves. I like the David Shaw suggestion. Seems like he could be a good option, being he is from the Jim Harbaugh coaching tree. Coughling would be cool to see, but who knows how much he has left to give.

To be fair, Carmichael wasn't head coach during that period but the offense still managed to be among the best in the league.  IDK how he'd fair as a HC, but the offense didn't miss a beat without Payton.

Though the Saints still had a good Offense,   one noticeable difference in that season compared to the previous season and the seasons that followed is Drew Brees interception total was significantly higher.   He had 19 interceptions in 2012.   Considering the Saints Defensive problems,  every turnover was compounded.

Ideally the candidate would have been a HC before but as a dark horse/outside the box candidate Dave Toub the Chiefs special teams coach would be an intriguing hire.

-Was the Bears special teams coach from 2004-2012

- His units ranked in the top 3 every year he was there

-Had 22 return TDs from 6 different players during that time and helped Hester to become the best kick returner of all time

- Known as a no nonsense coach who commands respect.

- Has coached Dline

- Highly regarded throughout the league

- Turned the Chiefs special teams from the worst to amongst the best in the league

-Highly regarded by Andy Reid who has an impressive line of assistant coach's

Here's an article about him

Which guys would you Rooney Rule

If in the Jaguars position,  I would interview Teryl Austin.   This despite the Lions struggles on Defense most of the first 7 games of this season.   You can only do so much as a Coordinator when injuries and talent issues are problematic.   Austin has the potential to be a very good NFL HC if given the opportunity in a good organization.    I'm optimistic that the unit will be noticeably better in the 2nd half of the season if the team has its key Defensive players on the field at the same time.

He at a minimum would be worth a hard look I would think. I can't imagine he won't be a head coach sooner rather than later.

Harold Goodwin, Offensive coordinator of the cardinals. He doesnt get as much credit since Bruce Arians is an offensive guy but hes been calling the plays this season and was still a part of it all and the cards offense has generally been pretty good for awhile. Their offensive line isnt filled with studs outside Lupati/Veldheer but their run game is cranking behind David Johnson. I dont know how he'd do with a young qb, and i wonder what kind of staff he can assemble, but offensively i like him so he deserves some attention certainly.

Four things in particular that jump out for me regarding Teryl Austin:

  1.  He's an excellent communicator to the players that he coaches.   The players rave about his communication skills.   This is a very important aspect of coaching.

  2.  He accepts responsibility and learns from his mistakes.

  3.  He sees the big picture of a game,  not just the Defensive side of the ball.

  4.  He will coach to players strengths,  not force a system on players.   Austin came from the Ravens organization that uses a 3-4 base Defense.  Instead of converting the Lions into a 3-4 Defensive team,  which wouldn't have fit much of the personnel as well as an aggressive 4-3 scheme,  he went with a 4-3 scheme.   When the team had more Defensive talent in 2014, including Ndamukong Suh and a healthy DeAndre Levy,    the Lions finished # 2 in total Defense that season.

He sounds qualified tenfold. I hope to see him interviewed and would not be opposed to him being the next Jacksonville HC one bit.
