Coaching Candidates

Quote:He sounds qualified tenfold. I hope to see him interviewed and would not be opposed to him being the next Jacksonville HC one bit. Interestingly, Teryl Austin has coached in Northern Florida before, as he was the Florida Defensive Coordinator in 2010. That opportunity, which was in between NFL DB Coach stints with 3 different teams, probably greatly helped him prepare to be an NFL Defensive Coordinator. Austin also coached in 3 Super Bowls with 3 different teams: Seattle, Arizona, and Baltimore. He goes back along way with Jim Caldwell but they were both on the Ravens 2012 season Super Bowl winning staff. As soon as Caldwell was hired as Lions HC, it didn't take him long to bring Austin with him to Detroit. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

Interesting. “Motivation alone is not enough. If you have an idiot and you motivate him,now you have a motivated idiot.” Jim Rohn Quote: Interestingly, Teryl Austin has coached in Northern Florida before, as he was the Florida Defensive Coordinator in 2010. I didn't realize he was the Florida DC. I like that he has Super Bowl coaching experience too even if it wasn't as a HC. Things like that matter to me. Do you have any thoughts or insight as to whom he would select on his coaching staff? That is a very important factor to consider as well. We show less advertisements to registered users. Todd Haley as HC with Mike Vrabel as DC would be my ideal pairing.
Vrabel played under him with the Chiefs so the connection is there
I think Jim Schwartz will be a name to keep an eye on. If the next HC is another defensive guy, someone like Mike McCoy (if he's fired) should be targeted as offensive coordinator.

Before answering your question, my gut feeling is Teryl Austin is going to need to be coming off a season of tangible success to get hired as an NFL HC. Though I believe Austin would be a good NFL HC in a good NFL organization, the Lions Defensive results in the first half of the season work against his chances of an NFL owner hiring him if the 2nd half results aren't better. I can't stress enough though that Austin hasn't been playing with close to a full player deck. Case in point, yesterday the Lions best CB ( Darius Slay ), LB ( DeAndre Levy ), and DT ( Haloti Ngata ) were all out because of injury ). In terms of a coaching staff Austin might put together, because he's coached with several teams in the last decade, he has many working relationships. It's easier for me to speculate on Lions coaches Austin has worked with because of my familiarity with them. I'll mention some coaches that I think could be appealing to Austin: So much is going to depend on what happens regarding Jim Caldwell's future as Lions HC. With the Lions having a number of opponents in the 2nd half of the season that are currently playing well, Caldwell probably has at best a 50-50 chance of being retained for 2017. There's been speculation that GM Bob Quinn would retain Lions Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter regardless of whether Caldwell is back in 2017. That makes sense considering the results Cooter has attained with Matthew Stafford. Even if Cooter remains in Detroit, the team's QB Coach Brian Callahan, the son of Redskins O-Line Coach Bill Callahan, could be someone that Austin tries to bring with him to his staff. Callahan is in his first year as a QB Coach but he's following a similar path as Cooter. Both have a background with Peyton Manning in Denver. Lions Assistant Head Coach on Offense/ Offensive Line Coach Ron Prince, who was once the Kansas St. HC and Virginia and Rutgers Offensive Coordinator could be of serious interest to Austin, if available. You might recall Prince being the Jaguars Assistant O-Line Coach under Mike Mularkey. Prince was the Lions TE coach before the coaching staff shakeup in the middle of last season. Because he had a background as an O-Line Coach, Caldwell gave him that position after the team's 2 O-Line Coaches were fired. Under Prince and Cooter, the Lions O-Line has made many less mental mistakes, as the blocking system is much more simple than it was under Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi. On the Defensive Side of the ball, I would keep an eye on Lions CB Tony Oden, who likely would be promoted to Defensive Coordinator if Caldwell is retained. If Caldwell is let go, I make Oden the favorite to become Austin's Defensive Coordinator if Austin gets an NFL HC position next season. Oden's work has been highly praised and he seems to have many of the qualities that Austin has. Oden will likely become an NFL Defensive Coordinator somewhere in the next few years. He has a coaching background with Sean Payton in New Orleans. Both Lions LB Coach Bill Sheridan and Safeties Coach Alan Williams are former NFL Defensive Coordinators. Williams worked under Vikings HC Leslie Frazier in that role when the Vikings used the Tampa Two Defense. Williams was also with Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell as a DB Coach in Indianapolis. The fact that Williams has gained experienced in a different system in Detroit helps his chances of becoming an NFL DC again. Because of Austin's background as a DB Coach, he understands the value of someone who a DB Coaching background being the team's Defensive Coordinator. Sheridan was a DC under Tom Coughlin with the Giants, which could make him appealing to Austin as a DC or as a LB Coach if Caldwell isn't retained. Lions Defensive Line Coach Kris Kocurek will be in demand as an NFL D-Line Coach elsewhere if he becomes available. Kocurek got more out of George Johnson ( now on the Bucs IR list ) in 2014 than anyone has ever been able to at the NFL level. This season, though the overall D-Line has been a disappointment, in part because Ziggy Ansah missed close to 4 full games with a high ankle sprain and the current shoulder injury to Haloti Ngata that's kept him out 3 straight games, DE-DT Kerry Hyder has been the most pleasant surprise by far on the Defensive Side of the ball this season. Hyder likely would have been released again if not for a stellar pre-season finale performance against the Bills. Hyder already has 5 sacks this season and had the most consistent pressure on the unit in yesterday's loss to the Texans. Kocurek is an old school D-Line Coach. He's highly respected. He learned under Jim Washburn, both in Tennessee and Detroit. I would agree with you that the Lions defense is going to have to show a little more if he's going to get a HC opportunity this offseason. He may not get one this year but I think it's only a matter of time. In the scenario you presented I assume that Jim Bob Cooter becomes the HC with Caldwell let go? Prince is intriguing as is anyone that I think could potential solve the Jaguars run blocking woes. There is something off here and I don't know what it will take to get corrected. My gut feeling is it is a coaching problem for the most part. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Thanks, D6! You come up big with great information as usual. My pleasure, Scarecrow! Thanks for your thoughts! IMO, I don't think Jim Bob Cooter would become the Lions HC in 2017 if Jim Caldwell is replaced. It's more likely that Bob Quinn would hire Patriots Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia, who Quinn knows very well from his Patriots Front Office days, with JBC being Patricia's Offensive Coordinator. Before Ameer Abdullah went down in 2nd QTR of the game against Tennessee in week # 2, the Lions running game was making major strides. The team was 3rd in the NFL in rushing after 2 games, this after being last in 2015. Even with the 32nd spot in rushing last season, the running game improved noticeably in the 2nd half oft the season after the coaching staff changes. This season, in addition to Abdullah's injury that landed him on I.R., Theo Riddick missed 2 games with an ankle injury, and promising 7th Round pick Rookie Dwayne Washington has yet to play in a game since his week # 4 ankle injury in Chicago. As we have seen with the Vikings, RB injuries can make it much more difficult to have an effective and consistent running game. As much as the Vikings O-Line has issues, I'm convinced their running game would be far better with a relatively healthy future HOFer Adrian Peterson. One thing that really hurt the Lions in the loss to the Texans is a player you probably are very familiar with from Iowa, RT Riley Reiff, was far from 100 % because of an illness that kept him out of practice for 2 days last week. Reiff had to come out of the game twice and backup RT Cornelius Lucas, who was only on the Game Day roster because of an injury to Corey Robinson, struggled mightily when he replaced the struggling Reiff. In that game, 3/5 of the O-Line played at a high level. The tremendous progress by C Travis Swanson this season is a major credit to Ron Prince. But even one position, in this case, RT, can destroy a running play ( and a passing play. ). Considering everything, I think Prince is an asset to the Lions and would be well worth considering for Jaguars O-Line Coach next season if he's available and on the same page as the team's HC and Offensive Coordinator.
Any thoughts on Bielema out of Arkansas? He was a Defensive Lineman for Iowa and cut his teeth coaching Defense. He hasn't racked up big wins with the Hogs but he always sports a strong running game and good defense.
One of my issues with him is that he hasn't spent any time in the NFL, even as a player so he will probably have a steep learning curve when it comes to being a coach in the League.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say! Quote:HC: David ShawIf Peyton Manning had any coaching experience at all I might be ok with having him as an OC...He needs to start as a QB coach before he assumes the responsibility of the entire offense and everything it entails Quote:So? You continue with mediocrity because you're afraid the next guy won't work?It must be because he's still here and will be for at least the rest of this season...I'm not on the Gus Bus, but I would put my money on the people who have been working in the NFL their whole lives knowing much more about how to run a NFL franchise than people who post on a teams website without ever even setting foot in an NFL office...Khan and Caldwell are not infallible, but they are much more football and business savvy than anyone posting on internet message boards We show less advertisements to registered users. That doesn't mean this is the right decision. Caldwell doesn't have that much experience as a GM and his W/L record as a GM isn't that good. I don't think it will happen but I wouldn't be surprised to see Caldwell ultimately be let go. He's as responsible for this effort as anyone and if keeping him limits our search in HC then I would hope Khan would do what is needed. Keeping Gus is working out well for us so far. Khan is a smart businessman his his football track record? So far it's pretty damn awful.
