just for the record ..... "having" $1 million and "winning" $1 million are 2 totally different things.

 

have $1 million -- continue to save in low risk accounts (e.g. bonds, money markets) and put my kids through college.  Hopefully retire at age 60 then travel while renting out the house.

 

winning $1 million -- now this is fun money.  I'd probably buy a few professional sports franchises, a yacht, 600 shares of google stock, and a beach front home in Malibu.

I think the smart thing would be to buy 500 acres where it would be cool in the summer and another 500 acres where it would be warm in the winter.   Montana might be great in July, but in January, I'd rather be somewhere a lot warmer.
