Wrong, Bradley was never the right guy unless the plan was amassing top five picks in the draft. This team needed a coach that could actually coach talent up, Gus doesn't do that.

I disagree.  Consider how the team was gutted to a level never seen before.  You needed an upbeat guy to keep the young talent upbeat and feeling good about themselves.  GB was the right guy for the 1st three years for that reason.  I firmly believe 5 years from now we will all have a positive view of the Bradly era once this current crop of talent reaches it's full potential.

 

For comparison, how do you feel about Del Rio now compared to when he left?

I've seen that same justification many times and it's completely misguided. What was needed was a tough coach that got guys ready to play and properly prepared them and taught them the basics of understanding gameplanning the way real coaches do it.

 

Instead we have a bunch of guys now that are mostly, from what I can tell, at best older stronger versions of what they were coming out of college, and in some cases guys that might have been coached wrong to their detriment.

 

Gus was never the correct answer to anything, with the possible exception of amassing high draft picks.

 

No need for the pollyanna garbage about a team needing someone upbeat, what every team needs is a coach that teaches them how to win.

Putting it into perspective, yeah Caldwell likely has to go. Very subar record gathering talent.

 

I think he's about average overall. And in fairness to him. He's pretty young for his role in the NFL. And it was his first time up to bat. I think he's always going to have a job or role in the NFL though at whichever level that may be in his field of work. His biggest mistake and fault lies on his decision of hiring Bradley and whispering sweet nothings into Khan's ear to keep him on board for another year. If this team finishes 2 - 14 this year. Which it may very well happen. He has to be shown the door along with him. He was an enabler over the last two years with Bradley and he kept pushing him and propping him up to this fan base. It didn't pan out. And I think he has to be hung out to dry as well for not owning up to that mistake and not trying to correct it after last season.

Caldwell is an average to below average GM. Nothing more. Anybody can accumulate talent picking at the top of the draft their entire tenure. Nothing to be proud of, Russ.

I'm sure coaches will absolutely balk at the chance to coach a team with a defense that is in the top third of the league and an offense that is filled talent like Robinson, Hurns, Lee and Thomas. Not to mention that huge negative of having an owner who has shown he won't fire you at the first sign of trouble.

Its not exactly common knowledge that our defense is top 3rd and you expect that to be common knowledge among coaches you expect too much from them. Youre thinking from the perspective of an optimistic jaguars fan and not a coach.

Coaches care about the QB, and other coaches and front offices weren't too keen on Bortles coming into this year after his "good" 2015. Think about how much they won't like him now...

The Jaguars defense is better, but still not even close to good. When they need to make a stop they can't make a stop. They commit tons of penalties, and they don't get turnovers.

 

The thing that the defense currently does well is cover because they have a good stable of big athletic DBs. When real coaching comes in and the group starts actually game planning they'll probably actually start being a pretty good unit.

We are 15th in sacks.

 

There is quality on this defense. Any competent coaching candidate will be well aware of that.

If Khan makes the mistake of keeping Caldwell at GM, this is really what I think we have to look forward to:

 

We will be in the same situation the Browns were in 3 years ago when they had to hire Mike Pettine. No hot coach is going to want to come here tied to a lameduck GM and bust QB so we will have to promote a positions coach to head coach and we will be a laughing stock of the league. Bortles will be kept as the starter obviously and Caldwell, in his infinite wisdom, will tell himself he needs to give Bortles every chance to succeed and will draft Cook or Fournette with our top 5 pick. He will probably choose Fournette because Caldwell goes by conventional scouting wisdom every year and Fournette will probably be a chronically hurt bust. Bortles plays terrible again and the new coach is terrible and we go 2-14 again next year. 

 

This is what we have to look forward to if Caldwell is kept on and I would bet a mortgage on this exact scenario playing out. We can only pray we get the number one overall pick in 2018 so we can draft Sam Darnold. 

I agree.  That sounds like every Jaguar season for the last 5 or 6 years.   The whole program needs to be rebuilt from the top to the bottom.
