An NFC coach isn't going know the exact whereabouts of every AFC player. But a coach being brought in to interview for the head coach position is going at least do his homework studying the team and the players on it, as well as the history of the team's owner and staff. They're not going to come in and just wing it when interviewing for a multi million dollar per year job.

Why bother taking questions, when they are all going to be "When are you firing Gus?" And "When are you replacing Bortles" neither of which he can answer without basically throwing Khan under the bus.


So basically, nothing meaningful for him to say until Khan green lights the firing of Gus, so no point in taking a beating at the podium.

I agree with this. Caldwell has certainly made some blunders as G.M., but has also acquired enough talent to win with a decent coaching staff and quarterback. Khan needs to somehow hire a top coaching candidate like Josh McDaniels or David Shaw. The 2nd priority is to find a reliable quarterback to compete with Bortles. Next year's q.b.'s coming out in the draft are mediocre so he should look to free agency to find his guy. Other top priorities should be to upgrade the offensive line and pass rush. Drafting Garrett or Allen in the 1st will turn an already solid defense into an elite one. The remainder of the off-season will focus on offense. In addition to a q.b., the team needs at least 2 new offensive linemen ( good draft class of interior linemen), a new tight end and another running back, although Ivory and Yeldon should be sufficient with better blocking.

 

Just like Bradley needing at least 7 wins this year to remain the coach, Caldwell will also need that to remain G.M. after next year.

Every year when there isn't a decade type prospect like luck people say the QB class is weak.  Wentz looked like the real deal for a while and no one thought he had a chance, Dak is punching above his weight class, you find them where you find them.

Caldwell has done a decent job but not a near enough good job given the positions he's been placed in during each draft.

His entire 2013 draft class is lack luster:

Joeckel - Gone

Cyprien - Just now maybe turning the corner

Gratz - Can't remember if he was cut but he's a back-up

Sanders - Cut

Robinson - Failed project player

Evans - Can't remember if he was cut but he's a back-up

Harris - Cut I think

MCCray - Cut I think

Most of his 2014 class has been decent:

Bortles - Not living up to the hype - Hope to god his flaws can be fixed in 2017 with a competent staff

Lee - Showing this year when he's healthy he's a solid contributor

Robinson - Great 2015 campaign - Let down in 2016 - Can attribute that to his poor QB

Linder - Solid guard / center

Colvin - Solid corner

T. Smith - Exceptional outside linebacker for a 5th rd pick

C.Smith - Think he was cut earlier this year

Bowanko - Can't stay healthy but a back-up nonetheless

Johnson - He's gone

His entire 2015 has also been lack luster but with maybe some potential:

Fowler - Didn't play last year - So far this year though he's been a bit of a flash in the pan but more of a setback at times

Yeldon - He just doesn't have it at this level

Cann - Decent guard

Sample - Can't stay healthy

Greene - Can't stay healthy and has been a huge liability this year on punt returns

Bennett - Is he still on the team?

Sterling - Project player - Finally saw some glimpses of him last week

Koyack - Could be a solid player with more time to develop

2016 Draft Class:

Ramsey - He finally got it right in the first round

Jack - Can't argue with this pick - everyone loved it

Nqakoue - Right now he looks like he was a steal in RD3

Day - Haven't seen him play yet

Holmes - Cut or on IR I think?

Allen - Hasn't played yet

Woodard - Cut or on IR for sure

Malik Jackson - I don't think he's been a bad player at all. Is he worth $90M? Meh. We'll see down the road.

Chris Ivory - Injury bug earlier and carries the ball like a loaf of bread so far this year. Concerning down the road.

Tashaun Gipson - Not a terrible signing at all - He's been beat maybe once or twice but the secondary has played better with him in the line-up.



So it's not like he's built together a world beater of a roster as well. He's just as much at fault for Bradley's struggles on this team. Both of them are very replaceable. And again, I cited this in a thread about Bortles yesterday. Jacksonville's fan base had grown so accustomed to really mediocre QB play between Garrard (Carried by a great rushing offense and above average defense with average receivers in fairness), Leftwich (terrible mechanics and injury prone, he was basically Mr. Glass here) and Gabbert (No intestinal fortitude whatsoever in the pocket) that we think Bortles is the 2nd coming of Jesus at QB despite his GLARING fundamental flaws and mechanics and decision making out on the field. The same can be applied to our general manager. We were accustomed to James Harris squandering draft choices and Gene Smith drafting Division III prospects that our city and fanbase didn't know how to act when David Caldwell started drafting guys we all watched here and there on Saturday's or work nights on nationally televised games. That still doesn't retract the fact that this team is 14 - 45 under Bradley's coaching and Caldwell's overall scouting and personnel choices and decision making.

If Khan makes the mistake of keeping Caldwell at GM, this is really what I think we have to look forward to:

 

We will be in the same situation the Browns were in 3 years ago when they had to hire Mike Pettine. No hot coach is going to want to come here tied to a lameduck GM and bust QB so we will have to promote a positions coach to head coach and we will be a laughing stock of the league. Bortles will be kept as the starter obviously and Caldwell, in his infinite wisdom, will tell himself he needs to give Bortles every chance to succeed and will draft Cook or Fournette with our top 5 pick. He will probably choose Fournette because Caldwell goes by conventional scouting wisdom every year and Fournette will probably be a chronically hurt bust. Bortles plays terrible again and the new coach is terrible and we go 2-14 again next year. 

 

This is what we have to look forward to if Caldwell is kept on and I would bet a mortgage on this exact scenario playing out. We can only pray we get the number one overall pick in 2018 so we can draft Sam Darnold.

A few things...


There is no indication, at all, that Dave Caldwell is anything close to a "lame duck" GM.


The sheer, blatant, raw talent on this team makes it a VERY inticing opportunity for a HC Candidate.


The owner gave the WORST COACH IN NFL HISTORY 4 years worth of rope. That makes the opportunity even MORE inticing for a potential candidate.


I do not, at all, expect Dave Caldwell to draft an RB early. Chris Ivory is a quality RB. He led the AFC in rushing last year. Our offensive line has not run blocked well. That's well documented. When given decent blocking, Ivory has shown great skill, vision, explosiveness, and power. The O Line needs improvement. Everyone knows that.


Bortles is a big question mark right now. Dave doesn't strike me as a guy who is absolutely tied to any personnel decision. Want proof? Everyone likes to point out Joekel. People love to say how Dave can't cut ties with early picks. HE SIGNED BEACHUM. Who didn't see the writing on the wall when that signing happened? Maybe people who didn't know who Beachum was. I'm from the Pittsburgh area. As soon as that signing was announced, I knew Jokes time at LT was over.


People seem to hate on some of his FA signings. To this I ask a very simple question. What FAs has he signed, that were NOT upgrades over the player who currently held the position? Years 1 and 2 he was literally just filling slots with whatever talent he could find because the roster was being absolutely gutted.


Parnell, terrible... still an upgrade.


Gipson, hasn't been great... MAJOR upgrade.


Jackson.. solid.


Odrick, upgrade. Skuta, Thomas, name ONE FA signing that was signed to be a starter, that was NOT an upgrade?


Sure... might not be franchise defining pro bowl players... guess what... VERY FEW FA SIGNINGS ARE.


Ok, so lets tear apart his draft picks.


Joke. We've discussed this at length. 2013 draft sucked. Everyone expected Joke to be solid. Everyone missed.


Bortles. Raw, sure. Last year he looked like a budding Franchise QB. I'm torn on this. He's terrible this year. Is that him? Is that coaching? What is it? We know coaching is terrible. Is that it? Or is it both? Most people thought Gene was solid, and it was JDR and Shack... ended up it was everyone... we don't know yet. Trending bad tough.


Fowler. Looks bad. Looks completely uncoached. The guy has raw talent. I hope a REAL coach can turn him around. I wanted Cooper, but whatever. I dunno.


Look at the rest of the rounds, though, and it's hit city.


Either way... this will be, BY A MILE the hottest HC job in the NFL. NO OTHER TEAM that will be searching for a HC will be anywhere even in the same STRATOSPHERE of inticing as the Jacksonville Jaguars.


BUT... that probably won't matter because Coughlin will have the job given back to him.

Dave's best job so far is performing a masterclass in job security rope-a-doping. Purge the roster so far that no matter how bad you are at drafting and FA acquisition what you replace them with will be better than that. I mean purge it so far that your acquisition of DAN FRIGGIN SKUTA will somehow be praised as an upgrade. 

 

Somehow that will fool over half of the fan base into thinking you have done well overall, when you have not.
