One bright spot
|
Quote:Carr threw for under 200 yards against us. Stafford's stat line wasn't anything to write home about either. Stafford threw a grand total of 0 TDs, and the Jags held their ground game to 14 yards NET. Again, Jags gifted em their usual 14, after 2 leBortleau ints, and that ST TD. I am not sure what some of these guys expect from the D...

The only bright spot at this point is that there's only four more games until this crappy season is over and GB is gone.
Quote:You're the one saying they destroyed us. Did they destroy us, or did they go easy on us? Okay. Maybe "destroyed" was overstated but the defense was still taken to task in those games. Stafford had 278 yards against us in Detroit with a 97.8 QB rating and he completed over 60% of his passes. Carr completed over 60% of his passes against us and moved the chains regularly that day. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Caldrac, out of the 26 points Detroit 'scored'. The Jags D wasn't on the field for 14 of em. Please let that sink in. Int return 7, punt return 7...

I am not arguing about who won the game or lost the game. This whole thread is based on the defense being a bright spot or not. They didn't give up some points. That's great. But I think we need to be careful as a fan base crowning this defense right now. We did this last year with the offense in 2015 and look how well that turned out this year in 2016. This defense STILL doesn't create any turnovers. This defense STILL doesn't generate any pass rush and register sacks. It still has glaring issues. They also do give up big plays in the most unfortunate times. They gave up a huge pass to Ebron in that DET loss. They gave up an eye gouging run to McCoy in the BUF loss. They let Carr beat us deep with Crabtree just before half time in the OAK loss. They got gouged a few times on the ground in the DEN loss. Again, the defense is good. It's not elite. It's not great. It's still missing some key components. And, again, when you factor in that they've had an unusual season as far as overall QB's they've had to face I am not so sure I am quite convinced nor sold on them yet. The only truly legit QB's they've faced this year are Stafford, Carr, Rivers, Rodgers & Mariota and they all looked relatively clean, comfortable and calm against us in those games. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? If by taken to task you mean limiting the Lions offense to 14 yards on the ground and 13 pts (the extra pt was blocked after the punt return score), then yeah, can I please have that every game, please?

Every D gets gashed now and again. I don't think they are elite either but they have busted their tail off, to me. It must be demoralizing for em to keep crunching while the O absolutely derails their effort, repeatedly. It's incredible they've maintained good play overall season long in spite of the O.

Nearly 300 yards given up through the air. A near perfect QB rating by Stafford and a completion percentage of nearly 70% is being taken to task. They still allowed the ball to be moved with relative ease. Elite defenses put elite QB's on the ground, take the ball from them and make them pay for it. This defense still lacks that killer instinct. You can praise them all you want. I am not jumping on their bandwagon just yet until we finish this month of football and get to see who the next coaching staff will be. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Again, I am not saying this defense is terrible. I am just saying be careful. It's been good. Not great, not elite. But good. We still need to get better in pass rushing, gap and lane assignments and creating turnovers. Hopefully the next general manager and coaching staff can build off of them next year. It would be something special if we end up looking like the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers by 2018. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I merely agreed with the OP that they are a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season. No superfluous praises dished, no claims of elite, no mention of greatness.
The killer instincts will come. It's a newly revamped unit. First, limit yardage, next limit scores, later, crush n kill. They have done the first two pretty well. If wins were coming we would not question em. We see scoreboard n go... They have been good enough to put the Jags in AFC South contention THIS season. I believe that. Perhaps not saying much given the south woes. But again, take away all the scores the team has given up due to O and ST miscues, then the unit looks a lot better.

No arguments from me on that front. If this team just had an AVERAGE QB right now. I think this team could potentially be leading the AFC South right now with Brian Hoyer, Nick Foles, Tyrod Taylor or Sam Bradford as our QB. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? Don't worry the defense will be on a downward spiral next year like the offence was this year when they had a good season last year.
unless Gus Badley leaves
New Jersey Jaguars fan.
I also only meant that the defense's statistical rankings were a bit misleading. The D is definitely good enough to win, but it's not a unit that's build to put up those numbers long-term imo. We have a couple core guys, no doubt, but there's work to be done there.

Same people ready to crown the defense are the same ones that crowned the offense last year
Quote:Same people ready to crown the defense are the same ones that crowned the offense last year I don't read where anyone is " crowning " anything. We're all aware of the dangers of getting excited about anything regarding this team. The OP was highlighting bright spots on an otherwise dismal season, and I think, as other do, that our defense offers hope for a brighter future, as did our offense last year. Whether that comes to fruition is yet to be seen. Quote:Same people ready to crown the defense are the same ones that crowned the offense last year Same people who couldn't do much reading comprehension last year, probably are just as lackluster in that regard now. Are they a bright spot or not? Or do we feel so small, jagly that is, that we can't even offer 'muted' credits when deserved?

Quote:Same people who couldn't do much reading comprehension last year, probably are just as lackluster in that regard now. I mean the op says it's essentially play off ready despite the mediocre teams we faced, but you're right my comprehension is off. Get off my [BAD WORD REMOVED], clown. The team sucks as a whole until they prove otherwise We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:Agreed. Again, I am not saying this defense is terrible. I am just saying be careful. It's been good. Not great, not elite. But good. We still need to get better in pass rushing One thing I will add is that these are things having a good offense will typically improve.
Quote:The only bright spot at this point is that there's only four more games until this crappy season is over and GB is gone. Wrong. Jaguars fans don't want the season to be over. |
