Coaching Candidates

My list:

Coughlin- Two time superbowl winner who has rebuilt teams in the past, need I say more?

Mike Munchack--He could fix our offensive from the line out.

Tom Cable- He's the Seattle O-line coach now, but remember he got the talentless raiders to 8-8 before they fired him. He would bring a tough mindset here I think.

Throwing a wildcard in here: Jim Bob Cooter. Probably too soon to be a head coach but you gotta love what he has done with Detroit's offense this year. He's had a hand in a bunch of explosive offenses over the last 4-5 years.

Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.

Jim Bob Cooter has indeed done a great job with the Lions Offense in general and with Matthew Stafford. JBC more likely than not get an NFL HC interview in 2017. Maybe more than one. But I agree with you that the age factor probably will work against him.

On the other hand: Considering how well the Lions Defense played on the road yesterday against Drew Brees and co.,...... even with the top 2 LBs out, and the Lions not giving up more than 20 points in 6 straight games, Teryl Austin's chances of finally getting an NFL HC job have gone up considerably, at least at present. Austin did a masterful job as DC in New Orleans yesterday.

Teryl Austin was a guy I hadn't thought much about...

Just a quick wiki shows you his hand has been in on many SB teams through the years.

But who would he bring along as offensive staff?

Back on page 10 of this thread, I expressed some thoughts about the question you asked.

Since that time, Jim Caldwell's chances of being retained for 2017 have increased. Yet, I can envision a scenario in which Jim Bob Cooter doesn't get an NFL HC job in 2017 and as a result the team that hires Teryl Austin as an NFL HC asks the Lions for permission to hire Brian Callahan as Offensive Coordinator.

Jim Bob Cooter is really starting to grow on me. He's really improved Matt Stafford's play, even though he is without his "safety net" Calvin Johnson. Maybe he could help turn Bortles around.

Nice. Another name to throw out is Bill Callahan. OLine coach of the skins. Formerly of the 'Boys. Was denied by Dallas some OC interviews while he was there.

I wouldn't mind seeing him brought in on an offensive staff. He's done good work for the Jets, Boys, and Skins.

One option for the Jaguars or another team looking for a HC is hiring Bill Callahan as HC and if he gets permission brings his son Brian to be the team's OC. In addition to the good work you mentioned that Bill Callahan has done as an Assistant Coach, he took the Raiders to the Super Bowl as a HC. Until this season, that was the Raiders last winning record season.

Can Blake Bortles take ownership of the offense? Does he have the demeanor?

Quote:This randomly shows up on NFL.com about Lane Kiffin as an NFL OC, so I thought I'd post it here.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000749010/article/scout-lane-kiffin-would-instantly-upgrade-an-nfl-offense

I'd be thrilled with Lane kiffin as the oc.

I could see Marrone becoming head coach if Coughlin is hired. Marrone really seems like a Coughlin guy and despite arguments I am a fan of Marrone.

If we had coughlin in charge of football operations and he could bring in guys like kiffin to man the OC position for a couple years until he earns himself a crack at a big time head coach gig, I'd be ecstatic.
Coughlin when asked if winning will be a focus: "What the hell else is there? This is nice and dandy, but winning is what all this is about."

From everything I've read Kiffin will be HC of Houston in the college ranks.

Whoever is hired to replace our current HC the expectations and time tables need altered greatly

Dave Toubs special teams strike again. The GOAT

Bama was fine before lane and he did a screw job with the vols. They are still paying for it many years later.

Yeah... people are riding his jock for no good reason imo.

Saban recruits 5 star after 5 star. Lane's roster has been pretty stacked outside of QB for his entire tenure. And has always had a defense he could lean on.

Saban is always in his ear and I think it's because his situational playcalling is suspect. Bama tends to succeed anyway based on being vastly more talented than most other teams.

He always has some big bruising back rostered and loves throwing it on 3rd and 1.

I've never been a Kiffin fan.

And I especially wouldn't want that guy anywhere near my NFL or college team.

If the Jaguars strike out on Matt Patricia, they could always go for Patt Matricia.

That's not happening

Here's an article that hit today about possible candidates. Makes the point there will be as many as seven openings for head coaches.

Of that list, I like......

Jim Bob Cooter, Kyle Shanahan, Harold Goodwin, Matt Patricia, Teryl Austin, Vance Joseph and Sean McDermott in that order.

I do not want......

Jim Schwartz- A failed head coach who is better as a coordinator.

Darrell Bevell- Seattle fans can't even stand this guy. I don't want anyone who might keep this "wonky" defensive scheme either. I want a pure 4-3 or 3-4.

Tom Coughlin- Old as God.

Mike Smith- Another failed head coach who excels as a coordinator.

Josh McDermott- Didn't this guy beg for his team to draft Tim Tebow? Enough said.

Quote:Kyle Shanahan?

He's actually my top choice if Payton doesn't get fired.

The failed head coach argument is pretty weak when second time head coaches have historically had tons of success. And Coughlins age doesnt mean anything if hes healthy.
