Why are you hating on Mike Smith?

He's a defensive coach. We've had 2 defensive head coaches and have had boring, vanilla, offenses. He's a cover 2 zone. Gus plays cover 3 zone. I'm sick of seeing zone defense. Our 4 down linemen can't rush the passerto play zone. We don't have a simeion rice, warren sapp, derrick brooks, lynch, barber. Its time for a change, and exciting dick lebeau, dom capers man to man blitz style defense.

You said Mike Smith was not a good HC in Atlanta even after D6 stated he took the Falcons to the playoffs four times. So my question has nothing to do with the Jaguars.

If he was so good, then why was he fired and he had a good QB.

If he was so bad, why did he lead the Falcons to the playoffs FOUR TIMES?

You have no point if you can't answer the question. You are just hating on him for no reason. Admit it.

I will persist until you give a REAL answer. Stop dodging the question if you want to stop arguing.

then what happened his last 2 seasons when he didn't lead them to the playoffs and still had Matt Ryan.

You are still not answering my question about how a bad coach went to the playoffs. He coached the team to the playoffs four times. How was he a bad coach during those four seasons?

Matt Ryan made him look good in those playoff years.

Matt Ryan is not some future HOF player who can win by himself.

Did the Falcons get better after they fired him? Nope. It was injuries that kept doing the Falcons in his last couple of years there. They just didnt have the talent they thought they had after Smith took them 14-2 and to the NFC championship game.

Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster

Ding ding ding! Bad coaches can't win 14 games in one season and lead their teams to a CCG with talent issues on the roster.

If he's so good, why didn't the owner keep him around till talent was replenished.

The following article discusses a key difference that contributed to Mike Smith being fired:

The Falcons only won 1 playoff game in that time span.   That was one of the major criticisms of Mike Smith by some.

One of the losses squandering a fourth quarter lead or something like that.

They played in a bad division and weak conference.

For four years?

Let's put it this way, Bradley has coached in at least a weak division for four years.

In seven years as Atlanta coach, Smith netted a 66-46 record.

In just under FOUR years, Bradley has netted a 14-46 record.

For Bradley to catch Smith, he'd have to win out this year, and go undefeated for the next three seasons straight, while Smith does not coach another game in the NFL.

Tell me you wouldn't take Bradley or any coach "failing" like Mike Smith has.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

I recall the one Falcons playoff win under Mike Smith in which the Falcons were way ahead,  the Seahawks made a huge comeback to take the lead,  and then Matt Ryan drove them to a game winning FG despite having less than 40 seconds remaining.   It might have been less than 30 seconds remaining.   A week later,  a huge Falcons comeback attempt at home against the 49ers in the NFC Championship game fell a little short.

That was it, the Seahawks game. Pete Carroll would not be happy if someone reminded him of the day he was a bad clock manager.
