Gus firing is inevitable, replacement already decided?

Maybe he was. Would any decent coach want to come be on the staff of the worst head coach of all time heading into his fourth season? Is it any wonder they could only promote from within?

We managed to get Schwartz to interview. There wasn't even a peep about Mike Smith.

Clearly, Khan recognizes that the best way to get a solid head coach is to wait for the guy the Jaguars let go of.

Quote:McDaniels only successes have come with Tom Brady as his QB. I'm not sure how anyone can specifically separate and identify his successes there. You can clearly identify that he was a failure in Denver though. I'd be very leery about a McDaniels hire.
You can seperate it by the plays i think. How varied are his runs, what do his 3rd and long calls generally look like, conservative or not, or are there just some plays where you find yourself scratching your head. Obviously brady and co. can make stupid plays work but If someone were to take a hard look i think you could identify whats going on outside of its pure success or failure rate.

It would be a good hire. He did pretty well with the Falcons, especially from 2008-12, when he was 56-24. He's done pretty well as DC in Tampa too - that young D is playing well the last few weeks.

I respectfully disagree. The offensive gameplan with Jacoby Brisett was completely different from the one with Brady/Garoppolo in there...and it went 1-1, almost 2-0, with grocery bagger level talent at QB.

I love a suffocating defense more than I like an explosive offense if I'm choosing between the two.  I wouldn't be upset at a Mike Smith hire, I just think Bortles offseason is key and he needs to have a QB guru in a head coach or OC.  The problem with it being the OC is that people don't stay an OC in one spot for very long.  They usually get promoted to HC somewhere else eventually or get fired.

McDaniels is a great offensive mind, the question with him is does he have the personality and people skills to be a good HC.

Mike Smith is the safe pick.  And that may not be a bad thing...  Though I would really like to see a top notch OC come in...  Not sure from where or whom, specifically, but we need a QB whisperer type OC in the worst way...

Wouldn't mind Smith if a solid OC came along with him.  His Atlanta teams were among the least penalized teams in the league during his tenure.  We could use that discipline.

The head coach needs to understand how the entire organization works as a team. He doesn't need to know what play to call on 3rd and 7, or what defense to call on the 15 yard line down by 6 points in the 4th quarter. That's up to his assistants.

He needs to organize a team. Motivate the players, instruct the assistants, game plan, find the weaknesses in the opponent, the strengths in his own team, operate the machine during the game.

I'm good with Mike Smith, he's been to the Championship game, far more than we've been in 16 years. You don't get there by luck.

I'd like Mike Smith as head coach, as long as Coughlin is head of football operations and Mike can bring in a good offensive coaching staff. Mike would make a killer defense with our guys.

I think previous HC experience is important.  Just because a guy is a great offensive or defensive coordinator doesn't mean he'll be a good HC. Gus was a great defensive coordinator in Seattle. For this reason, I'm leery of hiring McDaniels, based on what he did in Denver.   Mike Smith however, did an outstanding job with the Falcons.  They were in the playoffs for most of his tenure there.

I still love the idea of Coughlin coming back. In terms of head coaching experience, he's the gold standard. Won two Super Bowls with the Giants, took the Jags to the playoffs four times, including two conference champions.

I'd also be thrilled with Coughlin as head of football operations.

I don't get all this wanting Coughlin in the front office. He ran the team to cap hell when he had those reigns. If he is here for anything it should be head coach. He is a fantastic coach. Front office guy? Not so much. IMO

I can dig Mike Smith coming back...Guys with a better coaching staff this team could have been in the playoffs this year,in spite of how bad Bottles is... Smith the type of coach that uses players to the best of their ability instead of a dumb scheme with dumb lingo..

He wouldn't be putting the contracts together. I just think the football decision making is lacking overall, and it would be great to have Coughlin running the football side, while Khan runs the business side.

I wonder how much of that was on Weaver,  and his desire to win right away?
