Gus firing is inevitable, replacement already decided?

Wouldn't mind Smith he at least has proven capable of winning , lead his units to clear improvement and is known for discipline and accountability. The Tampa D has really stepped up and even when in Atlanta they had stretches of good play especially from their young CBs (Ramsey, Colvin would like him) despite not having a lot of talent on that side of the ball.
He can bring in a up and coming offensive minded guy to be OC and QB whisperer for Bortles while at the same time bringing some discipline and structure to our young talented but oft boneheaded defense. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Quote:I feel like Mike Smith is another Gus Bradley-type. "Nice guy, bad coach." If Mike Smith was a bad coach he would have no playoff experience with the Falcons. We are talking about a guy who has done it four times and even coached in the NFC Championship Game.
Quote:This comes from Sports firms, agents, etc. Shad probably sought out an outside firm to compile a list of maybe 20-30 coaches with detailed history and experience on a weighted scale. Doug Pederson went from NFL assistant to NFL head coach.
Quote:I want an offensive HC. No more former DC as HC. Smith can put you to sleep. He was mostly lucky in Atlanta. There is no such thing as a coach getting lucky to win that many games.
I've heard the Bengals might let Lewis go. Man, I'd love to have him. The Bengals were in a similar situation to our own when Lewis got the Cincy job--young, talented.

I want a guy who wins playoff games. Also, Lewis is a defensive minded coach. Quote:The head coach needs to understand how the entire organization works as a team. He doesn't need to know what play to call on 3rd and 7, or what defense to call on the 15 yard line down by 6 points in the 4th quarter. That's up to his assistants. Totally agree with this. Counterpoint: Rex Ryan has been to two as head coach. Quote:Atlanta had [BAD WORD REMOVED] for talent on defense. He turned around a 4-12 atlanta team into an 11-5/12-4 team his first year there. Atlanta up until the last couple years had terrible drafts. Outside of ryan, julio, and roddy they didnt have a ton. Turner broke down in those later Mike Smith years. Just to be clear, I don't think Mike Smith is a terrible coach. I think he's a solid head coach, but I'd prefer to gamble on an offensive minded coach who I believe has higher upside than Smith. I disagree with you on the overall talent of that team. Matt Ryan, Roddy White in his prime, Tony Gonzalez, four years of an ascending Julio Jones, and a couple years of Michael Turner is a damn good offensive unit and there was some okay talent on that defense over the years. Mike Smith also won enough games in seven regular seasons with that talent that he should have managed more than one playoff victory. In fact, he completely blew their shot at a Super Bowl appearance by sitting on a 17 point halftime lead instead of continuing to beat down Seattle like they did in the first half. His clock mismanagement and failure to adjust their game plan cost Atlanta several games over the years. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Just to be clear, I don't think Mike Smith is a terrible coach. I think he's a solid head coach, but I'd prefer to gamble on an offensive minded coach who I believe has higher upside than Smith. Yes, and when he had those guys look at ATLs record. Turners last year was 2012 when they went like 10-6 and he was a shell of his former self. Last 2 years they had no run game and Gonzo was on his last step. Their defense lacked much talent at all. When he had talent, those teams went 9-7 or better from 2008 to 2012. Quote:Just to be clear, I don't think Mike Smith is a terrible coach. I think he's a solid head coach, but I'd prefer to gamble on an offensive minded coach who I believe has higher upside than Smith. Just wondering why you think an offensive minded coach might have a higher upside than Smith? McDaniels and Todd Haley's HC candidacy is based on presuming that they will have learned from their first stint as a HC. I think that Smith also has every capability to learn from his mistakes as a HC.
Quote:Just wondering why you think an offensive minded coach might have a higher upside than Smith? Exactly. Every candidate is going to have flaws. So Mike Smith made a couple mistakes in ATL in the playoffs? Sucks, but hes not alone. Hindsight it 20/20 and he was a first time HC. To sit here and act like he wont do anything differently if he gets another gig is absurd. Point is, hes a proven commodity that this org. probably needs in all reality. Not dome inexperienced first time guy on a team full of young and undisciplined players. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I will rejoin the discussion when everyone is talking about who all of the coaches and general managers at risk of losing their jobs are.
Everyone who wants to know what I want will have to wait until Black Monday because until then, nobody knows who will be available at that time. Don't take any of my posts to mean I want Mike Smith to return. Nothing I posted implied I want a defensive minded coach with job connections to the Jaguars and Dave Caldwell. So far I only defended Mike Smith because the haters were out being negative about the Jaguar staff. When the fur settles, we will end up with the kind of team and coaches we wanted all along.
Quote:Just wondering why you think an offensive minded coach might have a higher upside than Smith? Part of why I would prefer an offensive coach is due to the simple fact that this offense and several of it's players need to be fixed. I think an easier path to fixing it is by hiring an offensive minded head coach than hiring a defensive head coach and hoping they bring along a good coordinator. As for why I believe some of the hot offensive coordinators present higher upside is due to how they failed as head coaches the first time around. I actually prefer Haley's style of offense to McDaniels, but I do think McDaniels is the more likely of the two to succeed the second time around. That's because I think McDaniels single biggest problem in Denver was his ego. He thought he could completely dismantle the team by not only drafting his style of players, but also jettisoning some very talented players in Marshall and Cutler. He's mentioned how the failure in Denver humbled him and how he was too gung-ho to shape that team in his image from day one rather than do so over time. It could be that I just haven't heard Haley discuss his failure in Kansas City publicly, but I haven't heard it. In comparison to Mike Smith; Smith's problem wasn't based around ego or managing players, but rather X's and O's. I personally think it's easier for someone to change the style in which they coach than what they coach. Mike Smith was a fine leader of men in that his players didn't hate him in Atlanta like McDaniels' did in Denver, but as I mentioned before he struggled to adjust his game plan and he rivaled Andy Reid for the worst clock management in professional football. Is it possible to learn from those mistakes? Absolutely, but I think McDaniels is more likely to swallow his pride than Mike Smith is to correct his in game management. Again, I am not against having Mike Smith as the head coach here, but there are several other candidates I would prefer over him. As for why I believe some of the hot offensive coordinators present higher upside is due to how they failed as head coaches the first time around. That's a fair point. Mike Smith with a Greg Olson type as OC is really not that appealing is it. If Caldwell truely believes in Bortles then he may well go for an offensive guy. I'd probably go with Haley over McDaniels but its really just a personal thing as something about McDaniels rubs me the wrong way. Both are brilliant minds but with personality flaws. Haley doesn't talk about Kansas much because he ended up so paranoid he thought his office was bugged hh hires ups. Had a ton of clashes with players too with the Chiefs and Steelers. Thing about Mike Smith is he knows Xs and Os very well. One of the biggest strengths of his Atlanta teams is that they always had great gameplans and did a ton of scoring in the first and second quarters. According to Falcons fans Smith just never changed from the initial gameplan. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Another defensive coordinator. I liked what he did last time he was in Jacksonville but we need an offensive guru and a quarterback whisperer.
Calling Deshawn Watson a future bust since 3/19/17. If I eat crow, I will keep this in here and proclaim JackCity a genius.
Quote:I want a guy who wins playoff games. I want a guy that wins regular season games first The coaches who win playoff games, obviously those fortunate teams are hanging on to them

Nobody wants to know. Get off your high horse. In regards to Mike Smith, I don't mind bringing in a defensive guy. If he can bring in a big time OC, him being a defensive guy doesn't set him back. |
