Gus firing is inevitable, replacement already decided?

Defensive minded, offensive minded, does it matter if the guy knows how to coach, gameplan, utilize player's strengths, pinpoint other teams' weaknesses, see talent, etc.?
Look where a defensive minded coach got us? Our defense stunk, and it took 4 years of drafting and paying free agents just to get the defense to be average We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Never saw a lick of an "offensive guru" in gus......seattle didn't seem to miss him much.

![]() Quote:In regards to Mike Smith, I don't mind bringing in a defensive guy. If he can bring in a big time OC, him being a defensive guy doesn't set him back.It will be hard enough to get a big time offensive minded HC to come here to work with Bortles. I can't imagine a big time OC coming to work with him. I know you'll counter with "but what if he fixes Bortles he'll get to choose anywhere he wants to go to be a HC". That's obviously not the play a big time OC will make, by definition. A big time OC will continue to play it smart and stay on his positive trajectory toward being a HC. The type of OC that would accept the Bortles challenge will be a desperate shoot for the moon type of OC. A big time OC that would be hired here for HC miiiight take that gamble since he will already be getting the big money HC contract, and will have more influence with player acquisition to get his guy to compete with or replace Bortles.
but, but, but...bbint says he's going to california this off season. :teehee:
maybe stay out of the bar

Quote:It will be hard enough to get a big time offensive minded HC to come here to work with Bortles. I can't imagine a big time OC coming to work with him. I don't think Bortles is the answer. But you're right, Unless we get a proven veteran QB, we'll be hard pressed to get a big-time OC in here that wants to work with Bortles or a new rookie QB. Getting a offensive HC doesn't guarantee a better offense. Gus was supposedly a defensive guru but appeared to not touch the defense until this year when he stated "he would be more involved and possible call plays". The difficulty (and honestly, the dangerous) part of hiring a "re-hire" is that the NFL is a "connection" business. Look at the staff that JDR put in place in Oakland. Look at Dirk Koetter's group in Tampa. They are plenty of Jaguars former staff in those units, including one that Jack fired in Jacksonville (and hired for the same position in Oakland). Between JDR and Koetter, I think the Jaguars tree from that staff is tapped out. Looking at Smitty's past, the only notable stint was with the Ravens and an interesting name that I really have not heard much about is Matt Cavanaugh. He was the OC for that Ravens team (99-2004), and they weren't really that good. Then followed it up as QB coach for the Jets, Bears, and Redskins. Obviously, none of those offenses have been elite but they've never really had good QBs either. What makes him interesting is that in recent years, he's gotten good production out of McCown, now Cousins as the QB coach. He was in his 40s when he was an OC, so its possible he's started to figure things out in later in his career.
Quote:I want a guy who wins playoff games. ... So is Smith... Quote:That's a fair point. Mike Smith with a Greg Olson type as OC is really not that appealing is it. If Caldwell truely believes in Bortles then he may well go for an offensive guy. That's the thing that worries me about him. Not needing to change your game plan because you're beating down other teams with your high powered offense is fine and dandy, but when you play against good teams and especially when you're playing them in the playoffs, you need to be able to do so. Obviously everyone here would take routine trips to the playoffs, but we also want to win it all. Could Mike Smith end up leading us to a championship? Sure, because as I said he's not a bad coach, and perhaps he will know how adjust in game the second time around, but I don't want to look back at the era and say what could have been.
I wont have a problem with Mike Smith, liked him when he was DC here and he did a good job in ATL, as long as we get a proven/experienced NFL coach that has won in the NFL,i'm good with that, no more first time head coaches.
Mike Smith Coughlin Marvin Lewis Sean Payton one of them guys is good with me

And he's done good things with the Buccaneers, but his time with the Falcons wasn't exactly that fruitful in terms of advancement. Seems he hit a point with them and peaked. Only 1 playoff win in 5 appearances. 5 playoffs appearances is a lot for a coach that is available, anybody with better record would most likely not be available or hard to get anyways, out of the proven coaches he will be one of the best options. I dont think Dave wants to hitch his last chance to an uproven guy unless he is %100 sure on them, and he has worked with Smith in ATL. And LOL the other poster comparing Smith to Gus come on man, Gus has the worst winning % in the NFL history, Smith has made the playoffs and with a new team could prob do better.

Gus is Pee Wee JV level....Smith is actual NFL HC caliber. He actually did well his first time as a HC...if we do get him, let's hope he does better like several coaches have done!

Quote:I will rejoin the discussion when everyone is talking about who all of the coaches and general managers at risk of losing their jobs are. Quote:Everyone who wants to know what I want will have to wait until Black Monday because until then, nobody knows who will be available at that time. Don't take any of my posts to mean I want Mike Smith to return. Nothing I posted implied I want a defensive minded coach with job connections to the Jaguars and Dave Caldwell. So far I only defended Mike Smith because the haters were out being negative about the Jaguar staff. When the fur settles, we will end up with the kind of team and coaches we wanted all along. How can you leave us hanging like this? I was planning to discuss your head coaching preference with my family during our Christmas dinner and with my friends on New Years Eve.
Well, for the last five years I've asked for a coach with a proven winning record as an NFL head coach. Mike Smith certainly fits that criteria, so I'd have no reason to complain.
My #1 choice is still Jon Gruden. "Why should I give information to you when all you want to do is find something wrong with it?" Quote:I feel like Mike Smith is another Gus Bradley-type. "Nice guy, bad coach."Slight difference between the two. Mike Smith has taken a team to the playoffs on 3 occasions, I believe. For Gus, a good season is to win 3 games. Yes, Smith is a nice guy, but he can be tough when necessary. I would be fine with his selection as he has the experience required of the next Jaguars head coach. A strong offensive coordinator would be critical, however.
Mike Smith's sideline demeanor is also polar opposite of Bradley's......he's animated, more engaged with players for good plays and bad.....much more energy. The players feed off that energy.
I think the trend we are seeing with NFL coaches is that the 2nd time around is were they see more success....this is even true of Bill Belichick (some never figure it out, like Rex Ryan). When going into a new situation they have past history of what they did right, and perhaps most importantly, what they did wrong, to draw from. Mike Smith can be that guy. We need certainty that they know exactly what to do and how to do it. With the exasperation of this fan base and this franchise, we need to play it safe with a coach with multiple years on their resume at HC with playoff appearances and avoid the first timers......We just can't sustain another flop like Gus. A grand sample size of one bad first time head coaching hire is enough to completely turn you off to it? We've had 3 head coaches of significance in our history (not counting Tucker and Mularkey's 21 total games). All 3 have been first time head coaches, and 2 of the 3 have been successful. And I know your thinking is how most people have felt so I'm not singling you out in particular. Anyone can feel free to respond as to why they think limiting our options to retreads is the best and maybe only good path. Quote:Why not? For better or worse if Caldwell stays for this offseason I can't see him taking a punt on a first time coach. There arn't really any decent first time HC candidates. I like Dave Toub as an option but that's it. Quote:Why not? A grand sample size of one bad first time head coaching hire is enough to completely turn you off to it? No one should think this is the only route we should take...but thr Jaguars have been bad since the late 2000s. Nearly a decade. This fanbase needs to start seeing some winning. Gus Bradley was a highly touted coordinator that got us all excited and hes beem the worst coach in history. Id mych rather go with a HC whose made the playoffs, turned around a team that had troubles before he got there, and has been a top end coordinator when he hasnt been a head coach. What he did with our defense and what hes doing with TBs is impressive. When he has some talent he can do wonders. Cant imagine what hed do with our unit. |
