I am a fan, not a cheerleader.

I don't know why people are questioning the timing, i.e. Khan should have waited until the end of the season.

 

By firing him now they can actively search for a candidate without rumors flying all over the league casting a shadow over the entire team. I've always thought if you know you're firing somebody at the end of the season anyway, why not do it now.

My questioning of the timing is why now, vs 13 weeks ago? Or whenever the bye week was? Or whenever the team was officially eliminated from the playoffs? Why this loss?

Not sure what new HC wants to work with a vet over a shiny new QB with the 3rd pick or a trade for a guy he actually likes.

Bortles have the talent, new coach would like to see what he has first, its no Andrew Luck or Winston in this draft, and trading for a QB who might not workout its not a good idea. 

 

How many times have we seen these backup QBs get traded for a lot and just suck on the new team

Agree, but they need to create an offense for Bortles' skillset and since they are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with this being his 4th year, you may have to change the offense all over again if we end up sucking and drafting a QB in 2018.

 

It is a tough position to be in because I don't know if anybody really knows what in the heck is wrong with Bortles or if it is even fixable.

This is a year too late. Watching this year, we should own this pathetic division. Last year had multiple gifts and the Gus couldn't win. This year a new coach would be in the thick of the playoffs. Disappointed with all of it.

Fans deserve better. Thanks for all the good times too many are in the past.

They won't be able to contact most of the coaches while the season is still being played. So no, this gives them zero advantage.

 

Technically they can't talk to coaches still employed. But they can now talk to people such as Coughlin, Gruden, Dungy, et al if they have any interest in those guys who are not employed and can have them come into the stadium to start the interview process without the whispers circulating.

 

As far as current coaches, such as Mike Smith and others, they have just indicated to them there is a job open here and if they are courted by other teams the Jaguars are also in the mix. Give them another option to consider. Besides, it's quite common for "my people to talk to your people" without getting charged with tampering.

 

On the other hand, what advantage is there to wait to fire him? I see none.

What's wrong with him I think we know. His mechanics are bad, which makes his accuracy bad, and delivery slow / timing off. He doesn't do a good job of reading the defense or going through progressions. He doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes and continues making the same ones over and over. He doesn't do a good job of managing the clock or game situations.


You're right that we don't know if it's fixable, but if you had to take a position on it, I doubt many can find much hope at this point.

Doesn't sound like a guy who will be fixed by off-season work. The inability to read defenses is one of the more concerning factors.

I'm glad Gus is gone. But if the owner and gm do not understand that they are responsible for a lot of this failure, this termination will not have the desired effect for the trajectory of this franchise.


I, for one, will not allow the owner and gm to escape the blame they are both accountable for.


They are a large reason why this season was a failure. Firing Gus now doesn't change that.

But he ran them endlessly not until they got it right, but until they couldn't get it wrong. He went to the line of scrimmage with two plays, then based on the defense he called the better. If it was a pass, he recognized the guy with single coverage and that was the primary target.
