They need to show Cutler the door (and maybe the GM that gave him that contract)

 

If they keep retooling that D and add new blood to their QB they'll be competitive in that division next year, imo.

 

  The good news for the Bears is the GM ( Phil Emory ) who gave Jay Cutler that contract is long gone.   The Bears can easily move on from Cutler in 2017 if they choose to go in another direction.    I can envision a scenario in which they re-sign Brian Hoyer,   with him competing with improving Matt Barkley, and a relative high draft pick for the starting QB position.

 

   The combination of a massive amount of salary cap space,   a Defense that's improving despite injuries and suspension,  and a running game led by 5th Round steal Jordan Howard could indeed make the Bears competitive in the NFC North next season.   Even in the remainder of this season,   I think they are going to beat at least one of the remaining teams on their schedule  (  Green Bay,  Washington,  and at Minnesota  ).   All are currently playoff contenders.   I'm seriously thinking about picking the Bears to upset the Packers in frigid Soldier Field.    Leonard Floyd looks like a big time NFL edge player.

I want an older, tough-minded coach.  Not roll the dice on another hot coordinator.  Not some college coach.  I want a real, professional, disciplined, experienced coach.  Create a winning culture.  Then, when the older guy is ready to ride off into the sunset talk to me about an up and coming coordinator.  I've had enough of the Jaguars being the team first-time head coaches come to in order to learn all the things they're not supposed to do as a head coach.

Just to update now that Black Monday has come early this year. In no particular order I'd like:

 

Dave Toub, Special Teams Coach, Kansas City - This guy has grown on me these past few weeks but I love Offensive Linemen that turn to coaching and I like the success rates of Special Teams' coaches becoming Headers. See; Reid, Andy and Cowher, Bill. O line guys just seem to understand the game from a fundamental level and Special Teamers have to love the game.

 

Russ Grimm, Offensive Line Coach, Tennessee - Although he'd need an extended shower replete with abrasive chemicals in order to get the Tennessee stink off of him, I've always liked the idea of Grimm as a Head Coach. He also fits Deacon's "former Offensive Linemen" profile as well.

 

Teryl Austin, Defensive Coordinator, Detroit - Just look up anything D6 has stated about him. He seems to be the real deal. Also, he's gone to the Super Bowl as a coach three different times; with Seattle in '06, Arizona in '09 and Baltimore in '11.

Todd Haley would be a good possibility.

 

His offenses have been above average in Pittsburgh in scoring.

 

His worst year was his first year there (2013) where they were 16th in the league with 23.7 PPG.  

 

The next year they went up to 7th with 26.6 PPG.  In 2015 they were again 7th with 25.4 PPG.  This year they are 4th with 31 PPG.

 

In comparison Olson had us at 14th last year with 23.5 and so far this year we are 25th with 18.5.

Uh, yeah.  And he has Antonio Brown,  Le'veon Bell, and Big Ben.  We have.... not them.

Deacon,  in yesterday's Detroit Free Press,  there's a new article about Teryl Austin that I think you and many others would like.  It relates to some of my previous thoughts about Austin.  One thing for sure,  Austin's high caliber coaching skills are needed with lead CB Darius Slay's hamstring situation and the problematic situation at Nickel CB since Quandre Diggs went down for the season at New Orleans 15 days ago:

He would still need a QB. All that other stuff is great, but this is the NFL - you have to have a QB. I wonder who would be his OC.

How much do we know about Ol' Tom? I know he fits the stereotype the old timers love from high school - gets red in the face and about strokes out if you screw up. If you're on time you're five minutes late, etc.

 

I'm sure the stats are out there somewhere, but how did the Giants rank regarding penalties, turnovers, etc., ? I know the Giants record wasn't great his last four years and I remember some real bad clock management issues.

 

It won't bother me greatly either way if he's hired or not, although as a season ticket holder from day one I'm certainly familiar with his act. I just hope the gung-ho Coughlin supporters aren't remembering something Tom can't possibly live up to.

Eh, Gus was under Carroll. Austin is coaching up that defense all alone under Calldwell. If we didnt just hire a failed coordinator id like Austin. But we need a proven guy.

Coughlin has his problems and flaws. But I think he provides a good disciplinarian for a young team that can hopefully at least get us on the right track.
