Caldwell Presser Notes Live

What people need to realize is, Caldwell isnt getting another "4 years" or another "Gus Bradley" type of hire. Dave Caldwell is just as responsible for the mess this team is in than the coach, the assistant coaches, the ownership, the players etc. Going into next season, hes in the last year of his deal. I personally am a fan of Caldwell and still believe in him, but the writing is on the wall. This guy has one offseason to get this thing right or hes gone.

I dont believe this next hire will be long term in the sense. From here on out, its win now or you are out. I got that vibe in press conference. Caldwell seemed like he knew his job was on the line. They wont be getting some coordinator with little head coaching experience and sell that to the fanbase. They need to win now and win fast. It sucks, but his leash is about as short as you can get. I honestly think Khan intervened and laid down the law. The team sucks, the fans are upset, nobodies happy we all thought this was finally going to be our big break and even then the Jaguars still cant get it right.

This next hire in my opinion will be a win now no BS allowed. It might be risky, but Caldwell doesn't have a choice. Year 4 of his rebuild, there is no escaping this reality. I may personally like the guy and what he has been preaching but Khan and the fans have been as patient as you can be. We have got to get this team in the right direction. Drastic decisions may have to be made. I think Caldwell knows this and will make a hire that not only sparks a fire for the fanbase, but is very qualified, will install discipline and has a track record of winning.

There is no better candidate right now for this job than Tom Coughlin. This was his baby, he was our first coach and his project. He lives here, he loves the city, hes got deep roots here and he is not only one of the most qualified coaches in the world, but arguably one of the best of all time. This is a guy with a tough approach who wont put up with any BS. This team has been poorly coached this year, Gus was a great guy but he was just another player, he was their hommie, not their coach. It showed on gameday, lack of discipline, penalties, finding ways to lose, nobody being held accountable. With Coughlin that all changes. He will lay down the law and if you dont buy in your out. He will bring a winning culture to this team. It may not be hip and cool, but it will get the job done and quick.

I think the best scenario for this team is to hire Coughlin and he grooms a coordinator to take over the job when he is done. The Jaguars need to start winning, hell, JUST GET TO 500. Give the fans and the city something to look forward too. Im on the Coughlin train, and I just dont see a better scenario right now.

Dave Caldwell is in his last year of his deal. He doesn't have 4 years to rebuild. He has one offseason to get the ship right and to truly get this team competing for the playoffs. Their is talent on this team, maybe some tough decision have to be made. But I truly believe with a little bit of discipline and a change of philosophy and culture, this team can make a quick turnaround and compete for a playoff spot next season.

The Gene Smith/Mularkey disaster showed us why you shouldn't go into a HC search with a GM on the last year of his deal.

No big time HC is going to go to a place where his job might be on the line if the GM is fired if the team doesn't have instant success in his first season.

Except for the guy who was the first coach in franchise history who wants to coach again and lives here and tried to get on Bradleys staff this season.

Think about it. Every offseason, a GM and HC on the same team are fired a few hours or days apart  Prospective candidates want to make sure the GM who interviews them will still be there through the duration of his contract.

Does an official source say Tom Coughlini asked Gus Bradley to let him join his staff?

I just said Caldwell should be extended...

I want what is best for the Jags. I don't think Dave is that, but if he is going to be the GM anyway then they need to extend him so that we can attract as good of a HC as possible.

Hes not going to get extended. He will get this offseason to turn the ship around and if not he is gone.

and every coach that might want this job can see that

and they know if Dave doesnt provide the results then Dave is fired, and the next GM might just fire that brand new head coach. So why would any head coach want to come to place with such limited job security?

The only way to give the next coach some sort of security is to fire Dave and let the next GM hire giving them a larger window to fix things(which obviously isnt happening) or extend dave so that the next coach knows hes not uprooting on a potential one year job.

You didn't say Caldwell should be extended, what you said makes it look like you're still trying to down play him, saying he's in his last year and that's why he wont attract any big time HC candidates.

Wrong, unless it's another 4 win or less season, Caldwell (and the new HC) easily gets 2 years.

I am saying he either needs to be fired or extended. A GM going into his last year is going to get stuck with Mike Mularkey types of HC candidates. Any in demand HC candidate isn't going to go to a place where the GM may be replaced and a new GM may bring in his own HC after one season if the duo doesn't have instant success.

Mike Silver said it. Is that not official enough for you?

Plenty obviously since he's already fielding calls regarding the opening.

This could be a plus to guys like Coughlin or Shanahan because if Khan does fire Dave then Coughlin could be both or Shanahan could get his dad to do it. Both are terrible options(at GM) to me but from there perspective it's not.

Any real HC candidate shouldn't be worried about, or even thinking about any GM contract. They should only be focused on winning. Plain and simple.

A real and confident coach should believe they can turn any team around, at any time, no matter what.

If any HC candidate is focusing on the GM being gone in a year because the team is losing. I don't want that candidate anywhere near my team, honestly.

It's all about one game at a time right? Isn't that what the great coaches speak? If some coach is worrying about what's going to happen to a GM, a year or two from now. Forget him because that's a clear sign of him thinking about just himself #1.

It was an interesting conference. He was asked if he would hire someone that he wasn't comfortable with but the others were and he said yes he did that with Gus. Now he is going to be the guy doing the hiring I think. Maybe it will turn out better. The nostalgic part of me would love to see Tom come back. He already has the respect of the fans which is probably the most important thing for the organization. If not, hopefully we get someone with winning experience and not just someone with coaching experience.

No pain, no gain.

Quote:Because a guy who hasn't taken a snap since the preseason, and probably hasn't even gotten more than a handful of reps is magically going to win something? Seriously, at this point, winning is irrelevant, and it's silly to think Allen is this magic bullet.
To be fair, Tom Brady was a backup and didn't take reps when he was behind star QB Drew Bledsoe. Im not saying Allen is the next Brady, but you don't really know until he plays. Bortles is literally playing at a getting cut, Blaine Gabbert level of suck. Not even 100 passing yards? Let Allen play, are you suggesting Allen can't throw for 100 yards and a pick 6? Thats what we have with Blake. It honestly can't really get much worse than Blake atm. I'd start Allen, just my .02

No reason to play him now. He'll get plenty of chances next year in training camp and preseason. Sticking him back there now and we might luck up and win dropping us in draft position.
