I keep seeing some version of this posted in various threads by folks.  I really disagree.

Robinson was receiving plenty of attention in the latter half of 2015 from defenses.  

And what exactly are these "artificially inflated stats" you speak of? 

 

The difference in AR-15's numbers this season is a result of three things. 

1. Blake's accuracy is far worse this year than last year. His throwing motion is longer, his mechanics wonkier, and his footwork took a big step backward.  yes - he had issues with these things last season. They are far worse in 2016.  He regressed. 
   
2. Robinson dropped more catchable balls in 2016 than he did in 2015.  (Blake also threw him more UN-catchable balls)
   
3. After seeing Hurns injured multiple times and taking several unnecessary hard hits himself due to Blake's inaccuracy, Robinson began phoning it in to some degree to preserve his health. Blake wasn't turning it around this season, and he was leading his receivers into vicious hits instead of hitting them in stride when they were wide open. Why get yourself injured when you are already eliminated from the playoffs?
   

I don't see 2015 as a fluke for Robinson.  May have been a fluke that Bortles compiled the numbers he did despite his accuracy issues, but those issues are far worse in 2016 than the previous year. 

Fair enough, allow me to put that another way;

 

*I think that Robinson and his 'stats' were to a large degree the beneficiary of being viewed as a rookie receiver on a bad team by our opponents. I realize that this can be debated 'until the cows come home' but nevertheless... 

* the fact that Robinson has dropped more catchable balls this season doesn't detract from my original assertion; in fact, it seems to reinforce it.

 

Again, I say that I do think that Robinson is an excellent receiver, but I'm reluctant to crown him based just on what I viewed last season given the circumstances surrounding that season. Let's see Robinson with a decent quarterback playing a team with a winning record and see how it goes.

I'm not sure if I would go so far as to say i agree with Mojo on everything he said, but I do agree about this one thing; by the third year in a quarterbacks career in the NFL, you can pretty much view him as 'he is what he appears to be'. Blake himself allegedly said that he is himself 'not a natural passer'. This... from our 'franchise quarterback'?

 

This isn't world stopping news folks. GM's miss on quarterbacks all the time; it's just painfully unfortunate that our GM wasted a third overall pick on a player with such apparent fundamental skill deficiencies. This... in addition to picking Gus Bradley as a head coach is bad moves on our GM's part. 

 

Taken individually, either of these picks would be forgivable, but in combination they've set the program back seriously. I hope Dave can pick a winner at either HC or quarterback (or both) this time because he needs someone to get him off the hot seat now.

 

To be honest, I was never a fan of Gus's 'ra-ra' style of coaching. However, I am confident that he had less to do with the current funk this team is in than the play of Blake Bortles. To be certain, our o-line isn't the best either by a long shot and needs to be actually upgraded and not just have bodies plugged in; but our current quarterback is an utter disappointment.

getting rid of D Smith.  Mistake we really could have used him those first two years with gus

getting rid of G Jones.  I get it, older player coming to the end of his career playing a position that is underutilized

getting rid of e. Monroe.  I get it, was on a contract year wanted to be paid more than he was worth we were going into a draft with a high pick and what seemed to be at the time in the perfect position to get a longterm fixture at the position.  Unfortunately that pick turned out to be a joke

Knighton.  We probably should have picked him up for about 3 mil a year for 4 years with bonuses bringing that number up to 5 a year if incentives met.  The guy has been a serviceable player everywhere he has been since he left.


As far as 15 Bortles and Arob being garbage time players I'm not sure I agree.  


Bortles assessment.  I think he got hurt early in the year.  The game he had against the Packers was nothing like how he has played the rest of the season.  Regardless he needs to clean up his mechanics, throw a cleaner ball, make better decisions, and get better protection from the offensive line.  I've actually been okay for the most part about his decision making, but his accuracy causes it to look flawed at times.  He operates under pressure pretty good but playing teams that have guys like Clowney, Miller, Mack.  make him look worse than he easy because our Oline is completely overmatched in those games.

Hurns Dropped a lot of balls this year and spent too much time hurt mainly due to Bortles throwing badly.


Arob.  seems last year he was matched up against faster smaller corners that could mostly out run them and he got by outjumping them, this year it seems more like he is just getting bullied by bigger corners and double coverage.  Frankly he doesn't seem strong for a bigger receiver and he isn't fast enough to run by corners.  Some of it was garbage time last year but I don't buy it.  We took more chances, played worse corners, and weren't ignored by the refs.  This point of the season he has looked like he has given up.


Thomas has been a bum and injured all year, does not open up the offense, bobbles too many catches, and is used poorly by the offensive coordinator


Lewis was used correctly and played great in my opinion before being hurt


Sterling & Koyack.  Look the part of a really good 2&3 TE or 2&2 I think Sterling has the upside of being a dominate TE when he grows more into his body and skillset.  I've been mostly impressed with how these two late round picks have played.


Oline.  I'm a fan of Linder, Beachum, Shatley

on the fence about Cann.  The rest are what I consider garbage.


basically our offense has been bad because it hardly run blocks, doesn't stand a chance passblocking dominant fronts.  Has had its design decimated by injuries to TE, Interior OL, and RB.


the fixes are better Oline.  New qb, or a cleaned up mechanics Bortles.  Thomas/Lewis replacement.  For Lee and new Te/Sterling to take the more physical corner or safety away from Arob.  And a ton more combo routes to help the receivers get open.


tl dr.  Mojo's analysis isn't too far off.

Daryl Smith signed a bigger contract somewhere else, the decision was that he didn't fit the Ice Cream Zone well enough for that kind of money. This team didn't get rid of him, he chose to leave.

 

Greg Jones was done and the team wasn't running a scheme that fit his deteriorating talents.

 

Getting anything for Monroe was a good deal because he wasn't a zone blocking tackle and Gus/Dead Fish were insistent on the scheme.

 

Knighton wasn't particularly good, had weight control problems and wanted to play somewhere else.

 

That's the commentary on every free agent or potential free agent, you just can't force guys to sign here.

It's easy to pick on a weak football team. Which is fine. But this is the same guy Caldwell cast aside a few years ago and looked like a genius in doing so when OAK picked him up. For the most part. He was fair and honest. I don't think you can argue with most of his points.

Every GM needs to provide players that fit the coaching scheme, else you end up with Bryce Paup. But that stopped for the Jags after 2015. Dave just went for versatile talent in 2016; apparently he saw the writing on the wall.

 We had a revolving door of either injured or underwhelming OLBs for three years after Smith left and Caldwell could have made a reasonable offer to bring him back but didn't.  Dave admitted regretting that decision prior to the 2015 draft in a "radio row" interview in Indy. 

 

To add to the Knighton point:  He really wasn't doing much in his final year in Jax - looked good for a hot minute in Denver but faded quickly there as well.

Not sure why folks regret losing that pattern of minor motivation followed by laziness and weight gain. The DT situation got better in Jax after he left with Miller and Marks.
